Hi Everyone,

Well I am totally done with Winter!  It is currently -8 degrees outside!  I spent yesterday evening clearing 5 inches of snow out of my driveway and sidewalks and then did the same at my Mom's house.

We are supposed to get more snow this Saturday night into Sunday.  Then Sunday night it is supposed to get down to -12 degrees followed by a high on Monday of only -9 degrees.  Then Monday night it is supposed to get down to -17 degrees followed by a high on Tuesday of -3 degrees.  Tuesday night it is supposed to get down to -9 degrees.  Way too freaking cold!!

Ken

Hi Everyone,

They have revised the weather forecast.  Now it is even worse!  We are currently under a Winter Weather Advisory which most forecasters are predicting will turn into a Winter Weather Warning tomorrow.  They are predicting between 6 to 8 inches of snow for Saturday night and Sunday.  That coupled with the high winds that will hit Sunday night will produce drifts over 3 feet high.

And the temperatures are worse too.  Sunday night the predicted low is -15 with Monday's high only reaching -10.  Monday night's low will be -17 followed by a high of only -3 on Tuesday.  Then we finish up with the negative temperatures Tuesday night with a low of -7.

Along with the super low temperatures and the high wind they are predicting the wind chill to be between 30 to 40 degrees below zero on Monday and early Tuesday.

Perfect weather to stay inside and build models!  Smile

Hi Ken!

We are supposed to get some weather here, but compared to you, it will seem mild in comparison. We had 50 degrees today, but the storm is blowing in with up to 4" of snow and dropping down to around zero.by Sunday. I was supposed to do some work on a car but, boo hoo, it will be too cold. (Can you tell I didn't want to do it anyway?)

It does sound like a good day to build models, plus I planned things right! I picked up all the fixins' for some chili! I do it the easy way- toss every thing in the crock pot and hours later- CHOW TIME!

The only thing I didn't do is rush out and buy some pot! I haven't touched that stuff since I was a teen, and I don't plan on starting up again anytime soon! Now the nation thinks were are all a bunch of dopers here in Colorado!

Jim, you just gave me a great idea as to what to cook for dinner tomorrow. In the slow cooker in the AM and eat sometime around 5 . Been unseasonably cold here in TN also and as such will only go out to pick up items for chili and nothing more. I've finished the road wheels and part of the 37mm gun on my M3. Still reading up on the history of this tank and the first time they were in combat the outcome was decidedly in the German's favor. Ugly.  Well stay warm all and as you said Ken this is certainly model building weather!

Hi Jim,

Man, now I am hungry for some chili as well!  Eats

I don't think of Colorado as a bunch of dopers, more like some people with common sense!  I am the same, have not touched the stuff since forever, nor do I have a desire to now.  But I have always thought that it should have been legalized a long time ago.  It will cut down on the crime, free up the police to catch "real" criminals, and bring in revenue.

Well the temperatures and snow totals have changed again.  Also as predicted we are under a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 1 AM Sunday to 1 AM Monday.  They are predicting 8 to 12 inches of snow!  It is supposed to get down to -16 degrees Sunday night, Monday a high of -11, Monday night a low of -16, Tuesday a high of -2 and finally Tuesday night a low of -4.  Then they are predicting MORE snow Wednesday through Thursday!

Was the first time those tanks were used in combat was in North Africa campaign fighting Rommel?

Yes Ken they were first used by the British who dubbed them the "Grant" and then the U.S. went up against the Afrikakorps. One thing that was appreciated by the allied crews was the relatively long range of the main gun but of course the Germans had much more experience at that time than us and it was a tough beginning.

Hi Everyone,

The snow is the wet heavy kind.  I have had to go out and clear the boat cover twice already today so that it does not rip.  This is the kind of snow that will start taking down trees and power lines, especially when the wind picks up tonight.  I went out last night before it started and filled two 5 gallon gas cans for my generator just in case.  The strong winds will also start the serious drifting.  The National Weather Service is now predicting a total snow accumulation of 12 to 14 inches.

Then tonight the wind and cold is going to arrive.  The low is supposed to be 16 degrees below zero with a northwest wind of 20 to 25 mph with gusts to around 40 mph.  That equals a wind chill of 31 to 41 degrees below zero.

Hey Jim, we made chili yesterday and it was yummy!  A big pot of it so we are still eating on it today.

Hi Everyone,

So far we have 10 inches of snow on the ground and it is drifting like crazy!  I have a drift in the front of my house about 3 feet deep.  They are still predicting more flurries through out the night.  The wind is really picking up.  It is currently 13 degrees and the temperature is dropping.  They are predicting it will get down to -15 by morning.  Counties right next to mine have declared blizzard warnings and I expect my county will do the same soon.

The whole town is shut down.  My work has cancelled for Monday, which they never do, indicating how bad it is.  I just hope that my power or my Mom's power does not go out tonight.

Ken

Ken, I hope you get through this storm OK! I know only too well how it is to not only worry about yourself, but to have to worry about Mom as well

Right now, we are at the 1 degree mark with only a couple of inches on the ground. Much of the big snows for Colorado are going to be in the northern and central mountains. The Denver Metro only got hit by the edges of the storm, I guess. I hear it is an "Arctic Vortex" and may cause record cold temps across the country. I just read that a plane has crashed in Aspen, with one killed, another in in serious condition. This weather is causing havoc everywhere.

In the mean time, I did brave the cold as I had to pick up my daily meds from the pharmacy and picked up a few grocery items. I also stopped by Barnes and Noble to see if the latest edition of FSM was in yet. (it wasn't!). I was on my way out when I spotted this:

I kind of cut off the price sticker, but it was a whopping $14.98! I couldn't resist!

I haven't had a chance to look through it all, but it is about the history on the Air Force with its early beginnings back in the early days of flight. It's a bit out of date as it concludes with discussions of the development of the X-35!!!! But hey! It was less than 15 bucks! They also had Marine and Army versions but were out of Navy. I might try to see if they have that one at another B & N nearby, but my first choice would be the AF one anyway.

Worked on the Growler a bit when I got home:

Finished the dullcoat of the fuselage:

Not shown here, but I also repainted the exhaust nozzles to more resemble the colors I saw on the picture I posted the other day. I pretty much had the colors reversed. A light ring with the nozzles being darker. I'm never satisfied, am I?

I also have been painting the missiles. I got the bodies done and have added the yellow bands. The kit supplies decals for the AGM-88 but the bands on the back are red, not brown like my references say. This is a pain to do in this scale!

I know there is a bit of a mold line I missed on the one AGM, but I don't think it will be noticeable once it's slung under the wing. Besides, the camera always shows stuff I can't even see with my eye.

By the way Ken, I made my chili Saturday, and it was yummy as well! I made a pig out of myself, but I couldn't help it! 99% of the time I'm either eating out of the microwave or out of a paper wrapper! Home cooked was just heaven to me!

Keep warm all!

Sounds like that chili idea really caught on. I had mine with some shredded cheese, sliced onions and plenty of hot sauce. Oh, and washed it all down with a pint of pilsener. Just the thing to battle mother nature's winter fun! Got some work done on the Lee; painted the hull and tracks. will post pics soon. In the meantime stay warm y'all!

Hi Jim,

Nice score on that book!  Let me know what you think of it when you get a chance to took at it closer.  I am always interested in good reference material.

Great job on the Growler!  And on those missiles!  Yes  Yes  I keep saying it, I don't know how you do it in 1/72 scale!

We lucked out!  My Mom and I did not loose power.  But some people did.  I feel very sorry for them.  To loose power in this incredible cold would be a nightmare.  It is supposed to get down to -17 tonight.  It is now -12.

My sister-in-law is in the hospital.  She works in a nursing home and truly cares about the patients.  She tried to make it to work this morning and got stuck in a snow drift.  Then she made another mistake and tried to walk to find help.  She ended up getting frost bite serious enough that they are keeping her in the hospital.  I am very concerned that she may loose her fingers.

I spent the day clearing my driveway and sidewalks and then drove over to my Mom's house to clear hers.  I needed a ski mask to cover the skin on my face.  I think I may have a slight bit of frost bite myself on my cheeks.

Wow. I feel real bad about your sister in law. This is some serious weather: people can die in this stuff! I hope she will be OK!

Got nothing done tonight: another evening where I was so beat when I got home that I couldn't stay awake. I ended up on the bed sleeping too early, now it is 2 a.m. and I'm awake! It may have also been due to another bout I had shortly before I left work with another migraine as I have mentioned in the past. I had to sit in the office for 30 minutes until the visual distortion part of it passed and I was safe enough to drive. I know a major cause of all lot of this is stress. I need so bad for my sister to get her son out of Mom's house so I can do what I need to do. They seem not to see what they are doing to me. I don't want to be a total a**hole, but I need to get this done so bad!

Hi Everyone,

My sister-in-law was released from the hospital today.  Her fingers looked a lot better than they did yesterday.  She still has to wear a bandage on each finger which means she will not be able to function for at least a week without help.  She is staying with her daughter.  She is supposed to have a follow up visit with a doctor next week.

I did a little more work on the Hoosier Hotshot.  I painted the cockpit tub with a dull clear to seal it up:

After this sets up I will start adding the color photo etch which will really make it come alive.

I also painted the front panel:

And here is the backside showing the gauge cans:

I am saving up for a punch kit so that I can experiment on the photo etch gauges.  My plan is to use the punch to cut out the gauge faces and glue them to this panel.  We will see how it works.

Grrrrr! I was just doing research and discovered my AIM-120 AMRAAM band is painted in the wrong place! The band should be further back near the fins!:

This makes complete sense as that is where the warhead is actually placed with the front of the missile occupied by the electronics!

I should have done a bit more research! Now I'm off to look at the AGM-88's

Ken, I'm relieved to hear sis-in-law is doing better!

Ken, I'm relieved to hear sis-in-law is doing better!

Jim

Bummer Jim.  But at least you caught it before you mounted them to the pylons.

Ken: Yeah, very happy to hear your sis-in-law is doing better.

And thanks, funny someone on this site mentioned somewhere about using Future to fix matte coats that turned white. I've had bad luck spraying the stuff so I tried brushing it on and it clears the white right up. Now I need to mix and spray the matte someway or the other to keep it from turning white again.

Ken, just read about your sister in law and hope she's doing better. It's almost unreal how quickly the cold can affect skin when subjected even a short time to those temps. Jim, the research you did has paid off on the missiles; imagine your reaction had you found that out after completing the model!

Just wanted to post a few pics of the tank as the weather here is finally nice enough to get in in the sun. Gloss cote is on due to application of decals. Will weather after especially the back with all the tools. I had trouble getting the housing for the 75mm to line up with the body of the tank. I had to do some corrective action after the fact with sketchy results. Rest of the build went smooth though still a few additions to complete.

Nice! You've gotten quite a lot done! And these pictures are great! I got a better concept of how the beast really looked, better than some of the photos I've seen of the real ones!

A question: Did that lower gun pivot at all or did they have aim the the whole tank at their intended target?

Jim

**An added note: I found this tank to be interesting, so I looked to see if something was available in the 1:72 scale I've been building. I found a few and wondered if anyone is familiar with Mirage Hobbies products? That was the only products I was able to find in stock, but I don't know their stuff.

Thanks for the kind words Jim. The main gun was  adjustable both in elevation as well as azimuth but the latter was really limited. The gun had a range of 3,000 yds. so the farther the crew could sight the enemy the better. I guess that axiom of he who sees the enemy first wins was true! BTW I'm going to try something new by mixing micro clear with clear green paint and see how that looks in the sighting slits. The tank used what was called a protectoscope which was a prism type viewing block to allow the crew to look out from from an oblique angle relative to the slit. Kinda neat concept. Still reading up on this one but it really amazes me what the engineers accomplished in the little time they had.

Thanks Ken. As I said I've still got weathering and last touches but I'm pleased with the outcome thus far. I'll post some final pics after that's done. As far as your build goes when you get your punch set do you think you'll add some future or something for the glass on the gauges? I've heard a lot of people do this. The work you've done so far is certainly very meticulous and I'm looking forward to what comes next!
