GMorrison....Nemo is looking great!  Great detail work and great subject!

GregBale...well I think you have done a smashing (in reference to your masonry work!) job!  I think you have picked the perfect Superman, and like i mentioned, your masonry work is awesome!

Great work, everybody! Looks like the GB is beginning to pick up momentum.

Tim...there are that many different Supermans?!  Good night!  Where have I been?

I, too was rather surprised when I started hunting for a "look" for my Man of Steel as to how many different treatments there had been over the decades. I've seen most of the movies and some of the animateds over the years, but I hadn't seen a comic book since the '60s, much less a graphic novel. A dizzying variety to choose from.

I finally decided to sort of mix and match. I'm going for sort of the retro feel of the '40s Max Fleischer animated version (that would be #3 in the chart Tim so thoughtfully included--I always liked the darker blue costume rather than the powder blue version, and it works with the kit's short cape and somewhat less-steroidal physique, compared to more recent depictions). But I opted to use the yellow belt and the red and yellow "S" reminiscent of "my generation's" Superman, George Reeves.

GMorrison - Nemo's looking sharrrp!

I got Nemo's suit pretty much painted. I'm trying to get a sort of natural latex look.

His gloves and boots are primed, I'm going to go back and shade them a little and make the weighted slippers gloss. The model needs to have some attachment added for those. In the movie it looks like black straps.

The helmet is a whole other story. It needs to have the headlamp and all of the other fittings attached before I paint it.

Then there's the tanks and the rifle...

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Bish & Shiv: Sounds good, looking forward to more photos.

And I hope Conan is coming along there Tim.

I airbrushed the highlights to the red area of  Picard's tunic last night. All major paintwork is done, I'm working on the faces now and cleaning up mistakes. I still need to do a little more research on the Romulan's harness and a few other detail parts. Haven't done any work on the bases for either though. The disruptor still hasn't showed up, I'm wondering if I can get one scratchbuilt by the end of the GB>

I got the first coat of gloss black on vadar, doing to do the second coat later tonight and then will get some pics tomorrow before I try out Jack's idea. I am using Tamiya Acrylics, and for some reason the gloss is not looking very glossy. I may end up giving it a gloss varnish, I will see after the second coat.

GMorrison - interesting link.  Are you saying you were a portrait artist at one time?

Yes, ochre and other earth tones is what the old masters used on canvas to create skin tones, there was no pre-made skin coloured paint back then  -lol.

I occasionally paint (write is the orthodox term) icons.

Jack, thanks very much for the advice. I will try it out at the weekend. I will practice on the inside of the cape first to get the right balance.

I know what you mean about the light at this scale. I can't recall who it was now, but someone posted pics of a completed darth a few months back. I asked how they did the body suit and they said just semi gloss black. I was sure there must have been more to it. But now I have done mine, I can see it, even with the poor light in my shed. Its certainly different from 35th scale figures.

That's really bad news about your build. But having seen you work, I know you can make a great job of it.

Greg: Looks good! Looking forward to seeing him come together!

Jack: OMG, well at least now you can just duplicate what you did before so it should go faster. Gosh I hate going back and redoing something esp something intricate and time-consuming again...

Greg - Supes and the brick wall are really looking good.  Your freehanding the chest logo is tops.

Bish - I'd suggest just trying the red for highlights for now, and see how you like it.  At this scale, natural lighting will lighten the colour naturally.  Method of choice - I'd mix a little red with your black, and just simply airbrush from top down direction.  Just keep it simple and slight.   Also just try it on his cape, since this is the only true cloth piece on Darth?

Here's an example of red highlights on a black jacket, and notice how the the dark areas have a bluish/purple look.

GMorrison - interesting link.  Are you saying you were a portrait artist at one time?

Yes, ochre and other earth tones is what the old masters used on canvas to create skin tones, there was no pre-made skin coloured paint back then  -lol.

------------------------------

Guys, thanks for the concerns, but plan is to rely heavily on the airbrush which should go fast.  What I'm planning is really similar to pre-shading, but on a more curvacious surface.

regards,

Jack

Boy Jack that makes me want to have a scotch.

Well there's time I guess.

Guys take a look at this:

I used to do this in a previous life, ochre is a good base color.

The group build is coming to life now!

Greg - Nicely done! Very old school, both in technique and look. Sometimes the best ways are the old ways.

Jack, sounds an interesting idea. There are plenty of areas hidden from view I can try that on.

This might sound a silly question, but would these mean using very dark blues and red's or actually adding blue and red to black. And would this work along with dry brushing dark grey or instead of. I have never used colours in that sort of way before.

Here's some stuff half-done.

The Super-torso assembled, puttied, sanded, (puttied, sanded, puttied, sanded....) and primed. White primer on white plastic against a white background, sorry 'bout that.

Brick wall sections. I primed with gray enamel just to give a darkish color underneath everything, then laid in the mortar lines in gray-white acrylic. Individual bricks painted in shades of Testors square-bottle rust, tinted with random mixes of tan, brown and gray. (The color variations are more obvious to the eye than in the photo.) Finished section attached to one of the crumpled I-beams. Once all the bricks are done I'll go back and add a wash to the cracks, then weather with oil filters and drubrushing, more on the "outside," less on the "inside."

.The kit's decals for the tunic and cape logos are notoriously useless, pretty much solvent-proof and completely unwilling to lay down (particularly over the compound curves of the chest muscles). I pondered the possibility of making masks, then just bit the kryptonite bullet and decided to hand-paint the logo, at least on the chest. I laid out a suitable version in pencil (a bit larger than the kit decal, as well), then grabbed my trusty 3/0 brush and had at it. In progress:

And more-or-less done, minus a bit of retouching, cleaning and smoothing of brushstrokes:

That's it for now. Thanks, Gamera, for the words of encouragement. Up, up and away!

Shiv - as others have stated, awesome work on the web-crawler.

Bish - this is going to be a great study on the variety of blacks, and you are doing a fine job of it.  Another concept you can include is warm and cool shades of black.  So those areas in shadow would have a hint of blue, while top areas, or those in direct light, would have a touch of red.

-------------------------------------------

Technical issues at the bench are preventing me from posting any updates that show progress to the point I had arrived at earlier.  Overnight, Red had her head dunked in a vat of Simply Green cleaner.  When it came to scrubbing off the layers of paint, her torso also began to peel (from the the fumes?), so ended up stripping the whole figure.  Even the Tamiya surfacer primer came off, so that means filling and sanding all over again.

So thinking positive, going to take the opportunity to incorporate the old masters technique of  Verdaccio.  This was a method of doing an underpainting in a green shade (usually black and ocher mix).  It was really more intended as a study of light and shadow before applying the colours proper.  The green though does provide a good contrast for skin, since it is the complimentary colour of red -  so  it should still be visible in deep shadow areas.  Hope to have some pics illustrating this by week's end.

regards,

Jack

Thanks guys.

greg, this is my first time doing black on black. But I think using matt, semi gloss and gloss plus the different textures will do a lot of the work for me.

I was home late tonight, so wasn't able to get any more done, but all being well will do tomorrow.

Hey Shiv, sorry I missed you, we'd flipped over to a new page and I didn't even see your last post. Really nice work on the web-slinger. As I said I might get about 10% of the figure done and then burn out on the project. Great idea and kudos for sticking with it to the end!

Greg: Thanks, feeling much better now- till I get the repair bill anyway! Looking forward to seeing more work on Supes, if the rest of the figure matches the superlative work you did on his face he's going to be an award winner!

Marc, great to hear from you! Glad to see you checked in.

Gamera, glad to hear you escaped your little weather misadventure in one piece. hope you're in the mood and back to painting any time now.

Bish, your Lord Vader is looking appropriately sinister. Black on black is always a challenge to paint/weather, and I'm looking forward to seeing the treatment as you progress.

Shiv, Spidey is looking freakin' awesome. That's up-detailing above and beyond; really cranked to see what you do with this.

Aaron, your work on Judge Dredd is most inspiring. It's always great to see a little creative styrene application defeat those annoying flaws in a good kit.

Tim and Aaron, thanks for the extension. With what the weather has wrought on all of us in assorted ways, the extra time is most welcome. Oh, and....

Tim Kidwell

Marc - Nice to hear from you! Let us know what we can do to get you back in the "gillman" spirit. Do Aaron and I need to sing you a song on the next vlog?

I think we all could use a song...purely in the interests of keeping morale up and such. Perhaps "Whale Of A Tale," in honor of GMorrison's beautiful Captain Nemo?

Great work, all! Really enjoying being a part of this GB. I've spent the last few days painting bricks in the wall Supe's knocking down, will post pics when there's some progress to show.

Bish and Shiv - Thumbs WAAAY up! Nice mods to Darth, and Spidey's webbing really makes the model pop.

Chuck - Zorro!

Eagle and Bish have sounded off about the mug art. If you want the art, just drop me a line at tkidwell@finescale.com. And remember, you don't have to finish. It's all about participation here ... Although, if you saw what happened with the WWI Aeroplane Group Build, there are other bonuses for finishing.

Remembered to get some pics tonight. I got two coats of flat black on the cape and tunic yesterday, then tonight I got 1 coat of semi close on the body suit. Tomorrow I will get a second coat of semi gloss and a coat of gloss on the armour, helmet, boots and gloves.

Here you can see where the bottom of the tunic does fit.  This originaly came in one piece with the cape and needed cutting out. I am sure I cut it out correctly, but with the ends attached, there seemed to be two much in the middle. As I said before, I didn't want to just go on trimming. So I warmed it with a hairdryer (been years since I used one of those) and softened it enough o push it in and glue it in a couple of places. None of this will be seen with the cape on.

And here is the cape. I am thinking of using a very dark black oil paint mix as highlights on the cape.

I should have the black done by the weekend and can start on the detail painting.

Gamera

Good luck Bish, I wouldn't want to be Lord Vader's tailor...

Everyone,

Just finalizing the art work for the mug. If you're interested in the getting a mug to commemorate you're participation in the group build, email me. Once the artwork is finalized, I'll email you the hi-res jpeg as an attachment. Again, these will only be sent out to participants in the Heroes & Villains Group Build.

Thanks for hanging with us here! Now to tamper with Dredd's Lawgiver ...

Welcome to February!

Two months to go! Eight weeks! It's crunch time!

Lots of work planned this week, from both Aaron and me. We'll also get a vlog out to you guys, so don't hold back. We'll need pics to show off your great work.

Jack - I thin the belt turned out nicely, too. Now, I just have to complete the frog and get the sword glued in place.
