Actually it's Hasagawa's P-47D Bubbletop, one of my favorite planes. Hope I can join, this will give me some inspiration to build it. I might be able to talk another treadhead whom I know has one, into it too.

OK guys I need some advice. I have built the F100D that I am working on for this GB. As I have never made a NMF aircraft before I need some pointers. First I rescribed all the lines and can't seam to get all the dust out. Second I sanded with 600 grit sandpaper and their is still a lot of scratches. What type of sandpaper can I use and what grit should I use and where can I get it when I can afford it? Thanks. In the meantime I am going to start painting the F-84 cockpit. The color wont be quite right but thats ok. Hope all is well. Take care and thanks for the interest in this GB.

There's a couple of ways you can deal with the scratches - depending on your budget
(1) polish it with a plastic polish like novous (sp)
(2) Use ultra fine steel wool - sometimes I'll use 0000 (hardware store)
(3) In the cosemetics dept. you can find nail polish boards for high gloss finishes(one board will have 3 seperate polishing grits) - these are also great for polishing canopies before a future dip.
(4) In the automotive supply or jewelry supply you can usually find polishing papers upto 2k grit - or micro papers.

For really effective metal finishes you'll need to have a glass-arse smooth surface and virtually perfect seams (an area where I fail alot).

May I also suggest using a tooth brush under tap water to get the dust out of the seams.

I tried the toothbrush with soap and water but it did not get all the grit out.

Jimz: Not sure about the dust ( light wash under the tap?), but for the scratches, I'd recommend buying several grades of sandpaper/ wetand dry. Start at 800 grit (as you have already used 600 grit), then go to 1000, then 1200 and some ppl even recommend going a further step to the next grade. Each step progressively and gently smooths out the scratches, which is vital when trying to acheive a NMF finsh as scratches will show.

When finished sanding, check for any "deep" scars that might need filled and do so, repeat sanding when ready, then polish the model. I use Peek as it does all kinds of materials. Not sure wha tit might be called in your neck of the woods. Once that's done, you are ready to spray!!

not sure which i want to do. want to see the kit first. painting is easier but the foil has the potential to look better.

What kind of glue do you need to use for that. I have a full roll of Reynolds wrap in my kitchen that I have never used. I think I bought it several years ago. Can I use any glue and do I need to do as much sanding?

Ah, nuts. I just had a look at my sabre, where some of the heavy sanding was done, and there are a number of obvious scratches on the underside. My problem is that i'm all done with painting and i have no inclination to mask it off again. I hope this doesn't come out on the B-17 I'll be putting together for this GB. Smile [:)]

Ok, I'll come aboard. I think I can definatly finish this by October.

What's the rules here? No pics? As many as you want?

I just finished a Mig-19 with a NMF and now I'm starting Revell's OOP F-89J. I'm hoping Mike Grant will be able to create some markings for the 59th FIS out of Goose Bay, Labrador. My father was based there is the mid to late 50's and I'm doing this as a gift.

I know I'll be using SNJ as it worked well for the Mig. The Mig was my first NMF and while it wasn't perfect, I was happy with it.

Jimz66 - I have heard that photo mount will work as a glue, but I have not tried that.
Microscale makes a foil adhesive which is a little thick for my tastes and at 2.50
for 1/2 a fluid oz. is a bit expensive. I found the same type of glue (it's called gold leaf adhesive size) at a local art store for $5.00 a pint. Cleans up with water or alcohol when wet, but you'll need mineral spirits if it's dried.

I used that with renolds wrap on a f-100 I finished a couple of months ago - didn't come out great but was a dang fine learning experience.

Hey, fearlessgroupbuildleader Jim! Still having problems logging on? I've given up folowing the status of the log-on problem thing. Dave said he'd fix it, right? Oh, and Welcome aboard, Bones! I did an F-89 in my youth... and messed it up, as most 8 yearolds will do. Didn't realize back then that they carried nuclear rockets! Can't wait to see what you've done with it! Big Smile [:D]

what is SNJ?

Shrikes: Yes, there is a reason why I chose the signature that I did. Sanding and more sanding. I still haven't quite perfected it, as I have only been modelling "full-time" for a couple of years, but getting better.
At least my latest build, the F4-J Black Bunny, looks better than the rest.
Swanny's web-site has a technique for sanding that greatly redues the amount of effort needed.
http://swannysmodels.com/ that should get you to his hoime page. Check it out.
But don't sweat it, at the marks are on the bottom!!Big Smile [:D]

SnJ is a bare metal finish. It goes on well and can be masked over. Right now they a special on their starter set where you can get a tamiya 1/48 p-51d with it for around $30. The starter set is usually $15.95, so if it is something you are interested in, it works out to be a decent deal.

Decision, Decisions! LOL I'm trying to pick one but the more I think about it the longer the list of possible kits gets! Confused [%-)] So far I'm looking at these possible planes in 1/72. 1)Saunder Roe SR A/1, 2)Tigercat prototype, 3)Westland Wyvern prototype,4)Su-9 a Russian Me-262 off shoot, 5)Bell XP-77, 6)Curtiss-Wright Demon, or if I can find a kit the CA-15 Kangaroo. My head is hurting! Big Smile [:D]

Dana, you like the Su-9 I take it? Come on now tell me what you really think. Laugh [(-D] The kit in question is the old but crisply molded MPM vac with injected parts. I have had several in my stash and have always wanted to give it a whirl. Approve [^]

Why not make a diorama of MiG-17's escorting a NMF Tu-95?! Or just one plane... Or a formation of F-105B's!! Maybe not... I need more time for my planes...

On my F-89J, I've got the fuselage together and the BB cockpit in it. It's not the best fitting thing in the world so I'm having to fight alot of that. The wings and rocket/fuel pods are together also. Still have a long ways to go though.

Well Bones-coa, ya beat me to it. Haven't even started my f-89 yet. I just installed a BB cockpit set a RM harrier and I had fit problems as well (ended up using all my clamps to get the fuselage halves together). I also have the BB cockpit for the f-89 - where did you have fit problems?

It'd be pretty cool to detail the pods to show the falcon missile launchers in the open position - I have a picture of that somewhere.

What's the best way to strip an ASSEMBLED 1/48 B-17?
I built it a while ago and screwed it up...

They say the best paint stripper is something called Castrol Super Clean. Just marinate it for a while in the stuff and the paint just comes off! I haven't tried it myself because i can't find the stuff here. Of course, the drawback is that it'll wipe out the interior paint as well...

Oh, and they say never, never soak a model in paint thinner, or you'll melt it. I was about to do this myself one day... thank god for the forums!
