Hi Everyone!

I washed all the parts last night and left them out to dry overnight.  Then I got the instructions out and started looking at the paint colors I will need.  I guess I just took it for granted that with all the paint I already own, that I would have what I needed.  But since this is my first Japanese plane (since I took this hobby back up), I found I do not have the colors on hand.  So I ordered them this morning.  They should be here by Thursday.

On another note, I stopped by Hobby Lobby (since they didn't call me) to see if they had put up the flyer.  It was not up.  So I asked for the store manager but got the same woman I talked to on Saturday.  She said the answer was no.  Big bummer.  It would have been the best place to have it up.  So now I have to rack my brain to see how else I can get the word out.

Ken

I know what you mean about the colors, Ken. I still haven't really looked into what I am going to need for the Flanker.

As far as the flyers? I tried thinking of where I might put something to catch the interest of someone like myself. I couldn't get beyond a hobby shop. Any kind of marketing is tough unless you know how to target specific groups. You have to admit our hobbies are very specialized.

Jim

Hi Jim,

Yes, I had my hopes up about putting the flyers up at Hobby Lobby.  They said something about competing with classes that they hold there.  How that would be competing I don't understand.

I am going to try putting up a Facebook page.  I don't know how effective it would be.

Ken

It depends on their company policies. I know the company I worked for a few years back had a zero tolerance supposedly because if you allowed any one group in, then it opened the door to others such as union organizers and other nasty people.

Are there Hobby Towns anywhere near you? The one by me seems to have no problem with fliers and in fact used to host monthly meetings of the local IPMS.

Frankly I don't think Hobby Lobby favors modellers that much-they can make more money off silk flowers and resin statues of matadors for your coffee table.

Hey Ken just read your post. I think Cliff's probably right; one flyer from you and they would have to accept dang near anything no matter how irrelevant or risk a lawsuit from some moron wanting to put up a flyer for the local anarchist club!!!

Also, I have used Tamiya's metallic blue and clear green to make the Japanese color found in the wheel wells etc. I think it's called "aotake"

Sorry to hear that Ken, our local Hobby USA didn't have a problem with it, but then again maybe it's one of those things where they worry if they accept one flyer than a dozen people will want to display them. Still you'd think the club and store would cross-pollinate, oh well..

Hey Ken,

I know exactly what you mean!!  I had to expand my paint palette as well; IJN Gray, IJN Green, and that weird blue-metallic color for the wheel wells!!!  Good luck with your Zero!!

Thank you Dave!

I just learned that my paint will be arriving tomorrow.  Not too long of a wait.

JImbot,  tough to hear about the family drama, but like everyone else here in the GB, just one of those things that has to be done.  I don't know what's wrong with this generation of kids.....no sense of duty or purpose in life and they think that it's perfectly okay to not work, to be a sponge, and to take advantage of those around them to support their slacker lifestyle.......I see this everyday at work and it really pisses me off....(pardon the French!).....Insert dirty words here!.........

Ken,  good to see you're getting into the game.  Like you, I'm drawn to that second scheme, mostly for the colors......good luck with it!

Thanks Dave!  And thank you for the vote on which configuration to use!

Hey Jim it sounds like you're taking the first steps to being rid of the weight on your shoulders; it can only get better now! I'm glad to hear about the success you're having with the flyers Ken. Ours is a somewhat solitary hobby and I only have the guys on this forum to really talk to about it so I would think you might find a number of people interested in sharing their skills.

Hi Mike,

Yes, every time I go into Hobby Lobby's model isle I will see someone else picking out paint, scoping out the model shelves, etc.  I figure if some of those persons saw my flyer it may peek some interest.

Hi Everyone,

I finally finished clearing off my workbench and am ready to start my build.  Here is a shot of the contents of the box:

 Clear parts:

 First package of sprues:

 Second package:

 Decals:

Color sheet of the two configurations you can build from this kit:

I am torn on which configuration to build.  The top one is the configuration for Lt. Cdr. Shigeru Itaya, Akagi Aircraft Carrier FG, Hawaii, Dec. 8, 1941.  The bottom one is the configuration for the 261st Air Group, Kagoshima Base, Feb. 1944.  It is more colorful than the overall grey one.  So it may be the one I choose.

 And finally the instruction sheet:

 Next step, wash everything!

Ken, I don't consider what she is doing now as helpful-more like giving in or something. She did start in on me at that point that I had no right to do what I'm doing and she hoped I was happy that he is out on the street. It was at that point that my thumb sort of accidentally hit the "end" button on the phone and hung up on her. No more arguments.

Hi Jim,

I figured the situation was what you just described.  But like you said, at least now you won't have to go through the eviction process.

Ken, I'm glad to hear you're finally going to have time to get back to the workbench! I've missed seeing the work you do!

AS for myself, I was at a friends house yesterday helping him install some windows when my sister called. It seems they are in the process of packing up my nephew's belongings and getting him out of Mom's house. I may not have to perform the actual eviction after all! I will finally be able to move ahead on the estate!

Do I feel happy? No. I feel sick that I had to do this. It's almost like having to put down a family pet that has become ill. You don't want to do it, but it has to be done. (It's not the exactly the same, but it's as close as I can get to describing the feeling).

After I left my friends house I wandered around for a while as I didn't want to sit at home. Even stopped off at a certain little club I used to frequent a lot, that involves brass poles and dollar bills-you know your in a dark mood when you can't even get interested in something like that!

Gave up on that and headed home. Sat down at the work bench....and did nothing!

I hope my family figures out someday just how hard this is, and I'm not just being an a-hole!

Today I'm trying to get started on the yard and the leaves. With work and everything else going on, I have put it off for weeks now and they are knee deep in places! I'm lucky so far that the weather has been good! It's 73 degrees right now!

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thank you for the compliment!  That makes me feel honored hearing you say that with your skill set!

That is good news that your sister is actually going to help you out.  Even though it was something she should have done a long time ago instead of giving you grief about it.

I hope you start feeling better soon about this whole ordeal.  It has been taking its toll on you.  Try to remember that you did nothing wrong.  In fact you are helping them by forcing them to start taking care of themselves instead of relying on you.

The weather here has been really nice as well.  It is currently about 62 degrees.  But they are forecasting a large dip in the temperatures later this week.  Most of the leaves are still on the trees here.  But by the end of this week I am betting they will be down.

Ken

Hi Everyone!

I made more progress on clearing my workbench.  This afternoon I managed to get the computer desk cleared (which is right beside my workbench).  Next is the top of my workbench.  My workbench doubles as a paint booth, so it has a "top".

Hey Ken, I can't see them having a problem with the flyers since as you say, they should stir up some business for them. Jim, that cockpit looks great; you've put quite a bit of work into it and it shows! The arthritis is a real drag as along with the pain it makes it much more difficult to enjoy your hobby. When I was laid up with my burned ankle it caused so much pain that I couldn't even enjoy my time at the bench. Plus the drugs the doc had me on made me so muddled up I would've messed stuff up anyway! Best regards on getting thru that.

Hi Mike,

Yes the locally owned hobby shop had no problem with it.  In fact they were very receptive of it.  It is now posted to the front door.

Hobby Lobby said that they would have to leave it for the store manager which won't be in until Monday.  But the person who took it said that she didn't think there would be a problem.

Now I just have to wait and see if it works!

Hi Everyone,

Hooray it is Friday!  Toast

I did manage to get some work done on clearing my workbench tonight.  I just can't believe how much stuff can accumulate on such a small area!

I will be taking my flyer to the local hobby shops tomorrow morning.  I hope that they are receptive to the idea of putting them up.

Awesome work Jim, especially given the arthritis you are fighting through. That bird is really coming along. You've gotten more done with arthritis than I have fighting a simple cold. I'm feeling a little better now so maybe I'll have some progress to show.

Well, first off I'm bummed out because Wed. night I was so tired, I came home and just went straight to bed! Some evening that was! Tonight was no better: When I was examined by Doctors back when I had that fall where I cracked my ribs and sprained my wrists, they said I had a lot of wear and tear and damage to my hands and wrists...and arthritis as well. Sometimes the arthritis is just going to flair up and be a bear for one reason or another, and tonight is one of those times! I have my right wrist splinted right now, and that can interfere with model building just a bit! Advil to the rescue as well!

Still managed a few things before I had to quit. Some of this work was done over the last few days.

Adding some PE parts to the seat: as you can tell, this seat is far from accurate for an ACES II ejection seat. Detail parts do help though, even if it just looks wrong to me.....

That bulkhead behind the seat is not cemented yet and still needs a bit of sizing to get it where I want it. Again, not perfect as it doesn't cover the whole opening, but still better than the big hole that was there. I also took some artistic liberty with that plain rear deck. I couldn't find any photos of the A-10's rear deck, so I used some styrene bits and some imagination to add some interest there. The mechanism for the canopy comes up though that big opening, so that won't be visible. Then I painted it with Testors semi-gloss black. I have become addicted to that color now as it seems to be a bit more in scale for 1/72 scale interior part to me. Flat black tends to be too grainy to me at this scale..

Still a few parts to add here, then maybe I will do some work on those other projects.

The other thing I am trying to do is shave down that over-scale control stick. I popped it loose from the cockpit and filed it down a bit. I have to be careful as it gets too thin, it will break.

Great work once again Jim, especially for 1/72 scale!  Yes  Yes

I hope your arthritis pain goes away soon.  That must make it very difficult to model.

Hi Everyone,

Well tonight I got to spend some time clearing off my workbench.  But I spent most of the evening working on that flyer for our IPMS chapter.  I got it finished and will be stopping by the hobby shops this weekend.
