That SD looks cool.  What exactly is in the lighting kit?  Fiber optics?

Yeah, the lighting kit consists of fiber optics and all the other stuff needed to light her up like a christmas tree.

I always wanted to have a properly sized Star Destroyer model and that one was too perfect to miss out on...

Here's an update on the X-Wing.

I rested the wires into the little trenches that I drilled out.  In order to conceal them I cut out some strips of styrene sheet and glued them on top:

Here you can see the upper fuselage half resting on top of the S-foils.  The wires are concealed very nicely now:

In the second pic you can also see how I used Mr. Dissolved Putty to fill in the gaps between the styrene strips and the wing part.  I used it to fill the gaps between the wing part and those half cylinder engine parts as well.

So is it just me in here?

Here's a small update on the X-Wing.  After inserting the clear disks in the engine parts I noticed that I really didn't carve out the parts so that the openings are perfect circles.  They are a bit oddly shaped and the problem is that the clear circular parts leave little gaps randomly along the edges.  It will show up fairly well when they area dulled down with the lights behind them.

So I experimented on this part with Microscale's Micro Krystal Klear.  I just used a toothpick to apply it into the open spaces and let it dry clear:

It turned out great!  I can't really show it with the light on behind it because my camera skills aren't that great but it sort of has this wet look to it when the light is shining through it.

Time for another update.  I'm moving fairly quickly on this one as you all can see.

The S-foil inserts have these open holes in them that expose absolutely no details when attached to the main part.  Not only that but the larger hole created an opening that looks into the engine area:

So, based on some reference photos of the studio models I decided to scratch build some details myself.  The first thing I did was to cut out some styrene sheet to "plug" the holes:

Then I used some various styrene pieces to give some life to the parts.  Again, I used pics of the studio models as a loose guide:

I think that looks alot better.  One thing I did notice while looking at different pics of studio models and shots of the X-Wings in the actual films was that there is no such thing as accurate.  They're all different.

yep chile con. my frau and i will leave early Friday from Denver. started cleaning up some local contest winners. as it stands now i will have in 1/35  2 towed artillery, 2 artillery pieces with prime mover, UN UNIMOG 4x4, a couple of modern wheeled IFVs, an SDKFZ DAK 222, an artillery vignette and an Italian MAS torpedo boat and MAIALE 2 man sub. and i hope a couple of 1/72 including my SS-25. probably no tracked thingies or winged thingies.

i will be wearing my warwheels yellow t-shirt or an aloha shirt and  3rd armored division baseball cap. and i look like my avatar only more summery. hope to see you there

Believe it or not, I'm still in this. I primed and sanded down the D-7 yet again this weekend. Dunno if I'm building the darn thing wrong or the fit is nearly as bad or worse than the old AMT kit but I've puttied, sanded, and primed her about three times now and still am finding seams and rough areas.

thanks been cleaning up stuff to take. grabbed my VRC-105 CENTAURO and washed it down last night with medium gray oils and a raw umber/green mix. it does look better and i have 2 more variants in the stash. these are just mean looking bastards. i am remaking MRE ration boxes for it. hell could be a small side business.the ones that come in kits have blurry text and just look crappy. will make soda cases, water bottle cases, etc. too.

i go into contests mostly with low expectations because i build for fun and like being artistic within realism constraints. i'm basically a hack modeler and don't really approach a start as contest quality.. that will change with the ORPHAN ARMOR GB and my BM-21 MRL with $100 of PE. i am really jazzed about the build because it will be a different focus, no trying new stuff, slow and methodical blah blah blah...

back to sci fi I WILL get the T-2 TANK next month from LHS. 15% IPMS discount gets it close enough in cost to support LHS. speaking of SCI-FI will veg tonight watching THE LAST SHIP and start of season 4 of FALLING SKIES. and have adult beverages.

I did get some advice from a regular contest winner the other week though, I have some issues with stuff being properly aligned- i.e. the tail planes on aircraft being crooked or different dihedral on the two wings. That T-2 tank looks pretty darn cool.

This afternoon I got bored and pulled out 'Godzilla: Tokyo SOS' and 'Godzilla: Final Wars' and watched them back to back while eating some of mom's strawberry pie. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon!

So, as it's a holiday in Quebec, I've got all day to myself, so, made some major progress on the Cylon Raider. I just can't get excited about lighting this kit, so, I've decided to let that thought go. So, here's the first step:

Here's the 'fuseage' (if you can call it that ). I'll call it the hull. Took up a few clamps, eh?

Here's the hull with all the component mounted:

And, here's all the pieces mounted. I left off the shield and guns. The shield is going to be a complicated paint, so, best left off. The guns will get individual attention. Really, only took a few hours to assemble. Very few parts, just, massive!! Not rushing this build, it's just, really a simple build. The paint job? Well, that's going to be a massive undertaking. She's pretty much just a mess of gray's in different scales. Going to do some heavy pre-shading then play around with different values of grays. More to follow!!

so it's a holiday in Quebec and you finished the GLADIATOR and started on this. do Canadian holidays last longer than 24 hours? from my limited experience with sci fi it's more about the painting and finish than the number of parts though with the T-2 tank i guess that depends on how they do the treads.

Looks cool Rob! I see what you mean about the greys but you can't expect much style from a race of intelligent machines can you???

Lol it makes me think of the new Doctor Who episode where a Dalek states something like: 'Daleks have no concept of aesthetics!' and the Cyberman replies: 'That much is obvious!'

Ok, so, got a wing 'half' done. This is gonna be a beast of a build. So, there's 3 different tones of greys in this wing, but, unfortunately the pic washes them out. I did the weathering with artists oils worked in with a huge make up brush: 

Now that's a really good looking paint job you got going there, Rob!

You really are getting the most out of that old kit, Fly!

Rob: Love what you've done on the wing there! I expect it's a heck of a lot more work than the modelmakers put into the original studio model.
