Rob Sherman

I did the weathering with artists oils worked in with a huge make up brush:

Your finish looks very amazing Rob.  Can you elaborate a bit on the "worked in with a huge make up brush"?  Do you use thinners on the brush to help streak the paint like that?  And do you do this over a gloss or a flat  finish?

Rob.H. - it's done on a Future acrylic surface. I applied (after the Future dried overnight) very wet applications in the 'trench like' (seriously, the panel lines are huge and deep on this massive kit) panel lines. I then drag a dry dollar store 'blush brush' in the direction of travel of the craft across the panel lines. The brush draws out some of the dark pigment and streaks it across the shiny surface.

The really great thing about artist oils is you can do as much or as little to it to achieve a 'severe' or 'light' effect. If you really work with pressure you can make the streaking faint, but, the lighter you stroke the brush, the darker the streaking will be. Takes a bit of tries to get the desired effect. It does take some time to dry though, so, beware of fingerprints!!

i really like working with artist oils. the DOOG got me started on using them last year.

picked up the 1/32  T-2 HKT (Hunter Killer Tank) to go with the T-2 AHK. better price at LHS before ipms 15% discount than i've seen on line. guess i best rent the movie to see these in action, eh. and learn to paint ALCAD.

firstly welcome SLW 45

GAMERA i was thinking doing different panels in different shades of tamiya chrome, aluminum, metallic gray, etc and than do artist oil filters; some blues and greens and browns. maybe i should gloss coat the paint or future it (never done that before either) before washes..

Waynec, you should consider using Alclad II's own Aqua Gloss coat.  I've used it on Alclad II high shine paints before.  It doesn't take away any of the metallic sheen and it makes the High Shine paints very durable.

But you will definitely need some kind of sealer over the High Shine paints because they rub off very easily, even from basic handling of the model, and do not hold up well to masking.

Never used Tamiya chrome, Alclad looks good and is easy to use so I've been using it. That's a good idea on different metallic shades there- some variation in tone will definably look better.

FnH: Haven't used Alclad's Aqua Gloss- will have to give that a try- thanks!

Hi all,

I have some questions.

Is it too late to get in?

And does it have to be a Ship?

or even a production kit?

I've just started a scratch build Star Trek TOS Phaser

Would that work?

Sure why not. That will be something different. Will it be functional?

I think the ATF limits civilian phasers to light stun only.

I have built a midgrade phaser, have most of what I need to do a hero,

but I would like to try a stunt vacuformed version as seen on the show.

Here is what I have so far:

Wow, yes that is a plethora of phasors!

I'm guessing since the Type I snaps into the Type II you're building both?

Oh boy...after slugging it out with a 1/24th Airfix FW-190 for the last 14 months, I'm feeling like I'm cheating here. This has got to be the fastest kit I ever built and to tell you the truth...I needed a break.

As you can see there's very few parts to it, germs not included.

To say she went together fast is an understatement. I used Testers liquid glue on the eye beam support arms followed it up with a little super glue in a couple of spots that didn't want to hold.

The main body when pressed together is near seamless, I used super glue in just two small spots on the left and right seams next to the fwd window to close them.  I will need to cover the seam that can be view through the fwd window but that will be done after I paint her.  Added every thing else and she's done except for the paint job, the instruction sheet calls for a copper color so I need to run out and grab some.

NOW! after I get done painting it the fun will really begin.

Scott

That is a very nice, quick build.

Pegasus did a nice job with that kit.

A bit more work on the Raider:

Spray bombed flat black on the complete superstructure as a pre-shade base. Will begin to tone in the greys hopefully by the weekend:
