With the IPMS nationals done and dusted aswell as the PA-22 I rebuilt now flying I can hopefully get some model time aswell :-)

Here is the 104 sofar. I am a little worried about the amount of detail I am loosing with all the filling and sanding, I will just have to scribe it back.

Problem is that with this plane being pollished allu alclad, there is no room for error.

Looking good so far. I'm following this build closely. I've never had the skill/guts to try an alclad finish.

Neither had I untill I found out just how simple Alclad really is, you just need a good smooth surface.....that is it!

I did some brush painting on the -102 today, I'll get the photos up later. I had forgotten how small

1/72 scale is, but it sure feels good to be building a jet again.

So far I got the big seams sealed on the 106. I laid a coat of primer down and found I have some small areas to tidy up. Then will come the re-scribe of all the lost details from sanding.

I built that kit 22 years ago for a guy I worked with who flew them in the Guard.

I have fond memories of the detail, but not the fit.

Thanks mach, yeah its a nice kit but there are a few fit issues. The project in the background is a 1/32 yf-22 I am converting into a production f-22A. Its a putty monster !

Nice job on the 106. I built that kit when it first came out and don't recall any fit issues. If it's a re issue it could be wear on the molds? I did encounter some fit problems with the 101 I'm building but I was able to even out the warps and waves at the join lines.

You are correct about no margins of error when using polished alum. Alclad but if done right it will look like a million bucks! How do you like that 104 kit so far?  

The 104 has always been in my top 5 best looking planes ever built. The lines just scream out for pollished allu.

The kit is really VERY nicely detailed, just a pitty that some of it is in areas where sanding is needed, but I will just scribe it back later.

I will with out a doubt put the tip tanks on and the canopy closed...... it just looks wrong any other way LOL

B-1 your 106 is looking fantastic! Hope mine turns out so well....

Question to all you rescribers....how do you get straight lines? i have a little rescribing knife but every time I try on just small things it goes every which way.

I use pieces of plastic strip that conform to the fuselage as a ruler to scribe long straight lines.

You can also use Dymo tape as a guide. It's the plastic tape used for making labels which works great and can be reused 2 or 3 times till it looses the sticky side.

I use dymo tape if I rescribe with a xacto blade. I do the majority of my re-scribbing with the UMM scribing tool.

Yep, that UMM tool is a winner!

Just a little bit of progress..

Some great progress going here!!  I am trying to decide if I want to rescribe or not.  Probably will, one I finish up my P-40 for that group build.

When I rescribe I use a needle in a pin vise and dymo tape as a guide as well as some scribing templates for different shapes.

Thanks a lot guys, looks like I'll have to go out and find some dymo tape, and if I start doing it a lot, get the UMM tool.

I do my scribing with an exacto blade. I find that if used carefully it does not "wonder" like a pin sometimes do. You can also "roll" it to create a line of the rounded parts without having to draw it for a line.

Lots of great modeling going on. Everyone is doing a fantastic job on their projects.

As for me, I'm trying to keep my Voodoo as OOB as possible but sometimes I just can't help doing some modification. The side fuselage light has a molded bulb that was screaming to be replaced by a MV lens. 

Unfortunately, I don't have the size I need in my goody box and 3 places I checked had #116 out of stock so I made my own from clear plastic.

I drilled out the bulb which left a hole on the cockpit side. I used a small thin plastic sheet piece cut to the correct shape and glued over the hole then painted with the matching cockpit grey color.

According to my references the light compartment is black so Floquil engine black was brushed on.The flat side of the lens was painted Floquil bright silver and when dry was attached with a dab of clear parts cement. The MV lens is a much better alternative but a clear panel will go over the light making it a bit less visible. I think it came out ok.

There's a scoop that is located up front and very visible to I deepened the openings a bit to give it more depth.

The nose cone was assembled and seams sanded and polished smooth, no filler used at all. All the probes were glued. I don't know if it will require weight to keep it from being a tail dragger.

Floquil engine black was brushed on the top cockpit sides. The canopy and windscreen will go on very soon to be used as masks from the exterior color.

I also went back and added a few smaller pieces of stretched sprue and Tenax to close up some of the seams on the weapons bay joins.

Your VooDoo is looking epic, Plasticj...keep at it. I gotta get started on my two projects today. Gonna try to do a side by side build with the 105 and 102.

1:48 Kitty Hawk F-101 Voodoo

I love the builds so far - nice work everyone.  I really like how your Voodoo is coming out plasticjunkie.

I haven't posted recently, but I am making progress.  I must admit I still have a love hate relationship with this kit. In general the fit is poor and as I progress with the build some of the sink holes are stunning! I mean, how did this get past QA?

The entire piece is sink hole heaven. Amazing. Then again, maybe it is just battle damage. 

The body is built in 3 parts, the front section, mid section and tail section and test fitting shows -- Putty and many sanding sticks will be used!

The front section is ready for attachment, although it is missing 2 small parts that shattered when removing them from the sprue. 

I made a big mistake on the front landing gear. The adjustment locators were off and I picked the wrong one to align against resulting in the landing gear well to be off by a mm or 2. It wouldn't have happened if I put in the gear first as the instructions show, but I was trying to leave them off till last.  I had to cut a bit of plastic away to get the gear in. Also part of the gear shattered trying to take them off the sprue (This is a big problem with the small parts on the kit. The plastic is brittle and the attachment points are large.)  I replaced them with brass rod, which in hindsight seems like a good idea since it will help support the weight of the plane as 2 lead fishing weights are right above.

The mid body is also finished. There is a large lateral gap that needs putty but I don't know if I'm going to fill it as it will be hidden by the wings.

The engine exhausts are look rather good (missed a spot there) but I don't think much will be seen when the jet nozzles are placed.

The wing sections have also been glued together.  It is one of the few places in this kit where the fit was relatively good. 

Finally, the tail section has been glued. It doesn't look bad in the photo but the 2 halves are not the same size so if you align it on one side the other is off.  It isn't by much but I still have a lot of sanding to do along the edges.

Well, that about brings me up to date.

Alan...great work on that 101. That KittyHawk kit is presenting quite a challenge. Was it expensive?
