Monogram Mafia III

Thanks, Stik.  I will eventually take such a photo, but not until I get the display case finished that I am building to hold the B-36 and other large models.  Another month maybe.  I have the B-36 stored up high and locked away from the cats at this point.

I don't know if the B-36 qualifies for a badge as it was started two years ago but just finished, but the Bearcat was built in the last two months.  I don't think I could do a B-36 in 6 months in any event.

John those are indeed a nice pair of builds. The B-36 is especially an impressive monster! Seeing as how they are both the same scale I am curious to see how they would look in the same photos for a size comparison.

Hey, I finished a Monogram model!  It's the 1/72 scale Bearcat done as a F8F-1 with a Lonestar resin detail set and Squadron canopy.  I did also finish the B-36 a while back so I'll add a picture of it here as well.  The B-36 build log can be seen in the B-36 group build

Stik, I opened the wall behind the engine with a dremmel so I can slip in the cockpit tub that way; however, I found the Otaki canopy is almost a perfect fit for the monogram kit. So I will probably use that and go with black windows. As for the mustang... yea, I have to get that one done!

CB, you can always use CA debonder to open up the fuselage and get the cockpit installed... and yes the Mustang is looking pretty good there. Gotta love a shiny pony!

And here is the state of the P-47... To save time I tried gluing the fuselage together with CA. Well CA leaked from the seems unknown to me and I did not realize it until I had several "CA Fingerprints" all over the model. Good think the CA was old so  my digits were not permanently affixed to the kit! I also did not instally cockpit tub thinking I would just glue the canopy closed and paint it black, forgetting that on this kit there is NO WAY to make the canopy fit in the closed position!

Well it's been slow progress on the Mustang.  Here is where I am at.  To give you and idea of my frustration with the slow progress. I actually picked it up a few days ago and starting painting the aluminum without masking the nose or canopy. I was careful to keep the airbrush pointed 'away' from those areas!

Don, I submit number 2, the venerable M48 A2. Actually not too bad a kit, but it shows its age. Adding the mantlet cover was enough for me. Markings are from the Berlin Crisis in October 1961. Those were A1's but that's Leiben.

The Don approves. I look forward to seeing them on a screen bigger than that of my iPhone.  But looking at them in my mind I hear the old radio commercials...

"Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! In Pomona..."  ;)

The "Long John" NHRA dragster with the De Soto Fire Dome V8, Cal Rice's Hot Rod magazine dragster.

Wish I coulda stayed in this one. Life got busy again. Every time I try to work in a GB it falls apart. Well everyone's work is outstanding!

I still have the B.U.F.F. Stored away exactly as you last saw it a year ago. I will finish it, maybe this late fall when the weather has cooled way off and I have more time. Thanks all!

G-I'm enjoy watching your build come together-I have that kit in the stash and you're turning that kit into a jewel.

Thanks Simpilot34-yes, it is a 'classic'-some issues with fit, some details are very nice, other details missing-but all in all, I'd recommend anyone with an interest in '60s era drag racing grab at least one or two of these kits for their stash.

It's getting there... Rather quickly too!

Here's prog. The M48 is base coated with Tamiya OD with three drops of black (in 1/8" of paint in a Dixie cup.

Then post shade in the darker areas with 6 drop mix, and post shade on the bright areas with straight XF-62. The kit tracks are crap, but I'm ok with that now. I will save my AM for that evr elusive Dragon M48 A1.

Thanks Stik-yeah, with that Hemi being out there for the world to see, it begs for ignition wires and fuel lines....kit fuel tank is very lacking so I might steal one from a stash kit...and it needs a fuel pump too...but the research is half the fun!

That looks real sharp there Bob. I am more drawn to the older ravening stuff like this from before the days of rolling ads like today. Not to push, but I would live to see what you can do with the engine plumbing. But of course the choice is yours alone.

Great builds you guys are working on-sorry I haven't been commenting on all of your builds-but I do look daily and am motivated to work on more Monogram/Revell kits in the future.

Anyway, I've been at a standstill for about a month...or more...no excuses...just lack of motivation....however, I did attach the blower scoop today and put some Future on the dragster body in prep for decals-decals can hide a multitude of sins.....I'm going with the approach that the weekend racers weren't show cars-main goal was to go fast....looking good didn't come into play until corporate sponsorship became the norm.

Motor and wheels are dry fitted-still need to add the 'fiddly bits' as like to call them-steering linkage, wishbones, fuel tank.....engine needs to be wired & plumbed but I'm not sure if I'm going to go that far for this build.....anyway...

Exhaust headers are soaking to remove the chrome-had to rob them from the backup kit-broke the first set-somewhat fragile.

Nice work G!! I had the OLD Testors M47 when I was about 14 or 15, got upset with mum one day, tearfully mind you, in a huff I sat down on our recliner that was a dark color, where I had put my M47 which was unpainted and that really dark green plastic........ yes, the crying got much louder LOL.
