Steve, that is quite simply, an awesome build.

Roughly twenty eight hours into my build, she's ready for paint.  The only major thing left to do is mask the canopy and attach it (I may steal my Airfix's PR XIX set, I hate masking canopies).  I've got to admit I'm kind of disappointed with the Fujimi kit with it's sparse detail and poor fit.  I've got a couple more Mk.14's in the stash, they'll be there a while longer.

About twelve and a half hours to go, canopy is masked and attached.  Just waiting for the glue to set, then hit the frames with some British interior green.  The exterior color will be a mix of silver and gloss gull gray, which seems to be the only gray I don't have in stock at the moment.  Time to finish the prop.  I'd like to have a talk with the guy that decided individual blades was the way to go in 1/72.

Okay, I have finally decided on my aircraft for the build.  I will be doing the 1/48 scale Monogram F6F Hellcat.  I have ordered the kit and it should be here hopefully by the middle of the week.  Unfortunately I will not be able to get started with my 48 hour project until after December 8th as I will be heading to Las Vegas this Thursday for some well needed (and deserved) R&R.

On the Bench:  Lots of unfinished projects!  Smile

Steve,

Great finish and presentation, well done. And a FROG kit and a base all in 27 hours? you need a cup of tea and a good lie down.

Pyrman, the pickup looks really good. Like the metallic finish, so far my attempts with coloured metallics show runs everywhere.

Brandon, them's fightin' words - my Rafale is going to come after your very well finished Yaks and blow them out of the sky with cream puffs an' fairy dust an' pony breath...

Ok guys, decision made! I will do a Pegasus P-51B. In the mail as we speak. Not my normal kind of build, but hey, we're talking 48 hours here.

WOW!  You weekend warriors smoked those kits.  Well done Brandon and Steve!  They look sharp.  The thought of starting and completing a kit in a weekend is unfathomable to me.  It takes me months to build a kit and I usually end up putting them away after awhile.  Quite impressive guys.

With an hour to spare, I'm calling this one done.  The kit decals were unusable, so I cobbled together a fictitious air racer scheme.  Will post pics when I can get to a computer tomorrow.  Lots of great work done this weekend, y'all should be proud.

Flyerduke, take a shot and join us!  You might surprise yourself.

lewbud - Unfortunately, I work most Saturdays and I'm just plain slow as dirt.  Besides, my modeling  attention span is only good for a few hours.  I do like the badge though.

flyer...I too work saturdays...and fridays, and sundays...though the name of the gb is weekend madness, I believe lewbud has allowed us to build on weekdays too...the main thing being just 48 hours. I too cannot sit down for hours on end at the workbench, but I think it will be fun to try.

Thanks for the praise guys. I have to say, it came out a WHOLE lot better than I thought would.

I made the base out of an old aluminum plate I bought for .99 cents at the local Good Will, and the "deck" is made from card stock. I just painted the deck at the same time I painted the model. No prob.

Alright lewbud, I've got a question for you....I have the italeri 1/35 DUKW w/105 mm howitzer...the 105 mm, however, is a separate kit (seen here: www.usarmymodels.com/.../italeri319.html) SO, I was wondering if I could build the 105 mm for this gb?

Flyerduke, you aren't restricted in this build to weekends only.  Any consecutive 48 hr period will do.  I believe you can do it, all you have to do is believe you can do it and then do it.

Now for my little build.  I started late Friday night after driving home from Houston.  Ok, according to the phone clock thing it was actually early Saturday morning, but I digress.

The kit is the Fujimi Spitfire Mk. 14e in Belgian markings.  More about that later.  A little over an hour later, I was gassed and went to bed.

Woke up Saturday morning around 0800, ate breakfast, piddled around the apartment, watched the Avengers for the 47th time, and somehow managed to get some modelling done.  Here's where she was at when it was time to get ready to go to work.

Got home from work, decompressed and started modelling.  No pics taken during this time, because it was kinda boring, in reality, I plain forgot.  Went to sleep, woke up, had breakfast, masked the canopy, painted the tires with the last of my Tamiya Rubber Black spray Crying, and here she is ready for paint.

The rest of the day was pretty lazy, shot some BIG (British interior green) and waited for it to dry.  Shot some primer, waited for it to dry. Went to the LHS for some gloss gull gray, they were out.  Bought some silver and the last two issues of FSM,came home.  Mixed the paint, using flat gull gray and shot the paint.  Waited for it to dry.  A couple of hours later, the paint was still a little tacky, so I put it the microwave for about a minute and a half (I did this in 15-20 sec bursts).  Masked off the antiglare panel, shot it with Tamiya Matte Black, and waited for it to dry.  Now for the decals, they wouldn't release from the backing paper.  Let one sit for over 30 minutes, no go.  Went to the decal stash and found an OOOLLLDDD Microscale numbers and letters sheet for the wing and tail numbers.  The registration number is actually from a Hobby Boss 1/72 P-51B sheet, and the name is from a Hobby Boss P-38.  So after much ado, here she is!  Finished a 9:42pm CST Sunday 11/31/14.

Some glamor shots:

Thanks for looking and there will probably be a P-40 in Pearl Harbor markings this weekend.

Damn! You guys are Freakin' awesome madmen!!! Some beautiful speed builds going on here! I really love the Sea Fury! One of my favorite prop birds!

OK, I'm in! well here is my kit choice, Bronco's 1/350 Type IX C U-Boat, to be built as U-505. I am modifying the kit to show her as she was on her last war patrol. So off we go.

the kit and my start time, 1500 hrs, Pacific Standard Time, 12/4/14

kit parts in their sealed bags....

out of their bags...

as you can see, a low parts count... but there are PE railings.... grrr....Bang Head

so anyways, to modify the kit to depict U-505 as on her last war patrol, one has to fill the hole for her forward deck gun mount. She did not carry one in Spring 1944.

so I sanded a styrene rod to fit

glued it in place... nipped off the excess

then sanded it flush

I deviated a bit from the instructions to speed up the build and finishing process... since I had learned some lessons on this on my Bronco Schnellboot that I built this Spring...

The hull is divided into upper and lower halves... I glued the screws, rudders and after dive planes in place... and some oval shaped fixture to the fore of the keel

and later the bow dive planes as well

Then I built the stand, since it will assist me in later steps for how to keep the kit somewhere during this project

then I added the few parts that I would to the upper hull and conning tower (an oops there learned a bit later)... support structures to the fantail (that broke during sprue removal and took a bit of time to fix and place)

and a screen type assembly to the conning tower (I know the U-boats did not have a radar, so I presume this is some sort of RDF antenna screen)

this left these parts for painting on the sprues and attachment later (while I Later decided to add the bow diving planes)

Up to this point took me a bit over an hour... perfect for Weekend Madness... Then came the Censored part... adding the PE railings... many Censored and almost another 90 minutes later I had them on...

along the way I decided to yank out the kit RDF antenna out and replace it with a bit of wire and mesh...

and then there was the easy bit of kit PE, the 37mm gun shield...

and after 3 hours, and 1 1/2 Whiskey on the Rocks to unwind, this is where it stands, all ready for primer and paint in the morning...

More to come tomorrow...

Nice work Stick. I would never attempt PE in such a short time period, it takes me way too long to install such tiny parts.

Thanks for the complement on the Sea Fury.

Steve,I was really questioning my kit choice for an hour or so there as I wrestled with the larger railing on the lower portion of the conning tower... After that I had to step away from the bench for the rest of the evening... I'll be back at it soon though after my morning ride here...

Well, this is it.  I picked this mess up at a swap meet a few years back.  Apparently there are enough mix and match parts in the box to complete at least one Mirage 2000 kit, possibly two.  The box contains sprues from at least two Monogram kits and a sprue which I believe is from a Heller kit.  Two sets of instructions and a sheet and a half of decals.  Just going to plow through the box and see what comes out

It's 6:02 pm Friday, and I'm off to the races.  Wish me luck!

Good luck Caveman,

My Sea Fury was actually 2 kits as well, and good thing, it was missing the rudder and 1 rocket rail..... Thankfully I had a spares.
