2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

Gotcha posted lostagain. Again , a beauty of a build and many, many thanks for taking part in this group build.

One of my biggest regrets was not completing a 109 for my own GB. I can only say at this point that when the automotive modeling bug bit me, it bit hard. I hope to return to aircraft some time later on this year when I get through with my current '54 Chevy Panel Wagon build I'm in right now for my Red Hot and Rollin' GB for 2016.

The moment I saw that photo a few years ago, I was always going to build it in Gibbes' markings. Then there was the inspiration of the 109 GB and the Aces GB. Then the LHS had a special on 1/48 Hasegawa kits including the 109 G2 Trop.

So it just had to happen. Initially I was going to just build Gibbes', but I thought I would start building it as Black 6 before overmarking it as Gibbes', just as really happy. I suppose I should now repaint it as Black 6 at Duxford (before it crashed).

Thanks for the kind words. The figure was converted from the Tamiya 1/48 figure of Montgomery. I researched Monty and Gibbes, both were around 5'6" so that seemed right. Trouble is, he did not look as tall as he should from the original photo, no matter how I shot it.

Measuring the figure, it is actually 5'0" - no wonder it doesn't look right... maybe I will redo him a bit taller sometime...

Man that is a great idea for those builds. I'm glad to see that you finished them up for the group build! Thank you for being a part of this group build lost. It's builds like this from all the participants that helped to make this a great group build.

Bobby Gibbes and his Bf 109 G2 Trop

In Libya in 1943, Australians from 3 Squadron RAAF 'captured' a Bf 109 "Black 6"

Which I made up for this GB:

Bobby Gibbes as Squadron CO, had the markings redone as his personal aircraft, which I did for the Aces GB:

And had his photo taken with it:

Which is where the inspiration came for making this model in the first place:

The plane went full circle and ended up as "Black6" in the IWM Duxford Collection.

I couldnt remember if I had posted this picture of my 109 G-6 Late version yet. If I had, sorry. It is not 100% complete as I still have a few small bits to add and a few other decals. I have done some weathering using pastels chalks around the engine exhaust and I've added a light earth colored was. I dont think I had added the wash yet when this picture was taken a few weeks ago. I'm hoping to have it all buttoned up in the next day or so.

lost: I really like the look of those tan 109's and your's is no exception to that. Nice clean build bud and thank you for being a part of this GB. Which one would you like on the wall of fame and I'll get it there.

ALL: I have to apologize for my lack of a build throughout this all. I set out to tackle something I'd never done before and that was to do two builds at once. I've seen alot of folks do it and figured I could too. Folks that just aint the case for this model builder. Something had to go to the wayside and unfortunately it was my aircraft build. In November of 2014 I got the automotive bug and fell head over heels for it. I never saw this coming in a million years. I've broken through the gloss coat fear barrier and feel fairly confident in that now. I also have to apologize for my lack of presence over the last month or so. My son was having ALOT of trouble in school and I had to pull back from hosting for a bit. I may resume GB's in the future but I think I'm going to lay low with them for the next half year so I can catch up with some other priorities that are now coming into view. I hate starting something I can't finish so I'll wait till I can devote the time needed to run another one. As far as what I've been up to build wise?

This has kept me busy for all of ten months now but finished it up a week or so ago:

Really nice work everyone! It's been a pleasure hanging out with you guys for the past year. I am a few days late but here it is. 1/32 Trumpeter K-4 "White 10" JG27. Mostly OOB with the addition of RB Productions belts, BarracudaCast prop blades, spinner, and wheels, G-Factor gear legs, and EagleCals decals. Very enjoyable build.

Sorry gang! Here's what I should have posted as the finished product. My ancient vista computer sometimes doesn't move as fast as I wish and the mouse lags and...well, shtuff happens.

Got the airframe on the Airfix Emil put together. 

And the fit of the gun inserts is alittle hokey. But that allows you to do an E-1 (with the addition of the underwing bulges) without having to supply a whole other wing.

Lostagain -- that is a gorgeous model and does ample justice to the real plane where she stands on exhibit at Hendon (at least that's where she was when I saw her several years back.) The camopy masking is very good -- I've ben masking from scratch myself lately, I've not been having much luck with precut masks for some reason...

I hope we have some grace period, I'd love to get one more completion!

Thay is coming along nicely. Couldn't see the finished product, the link took me to PB's calendar page. Or it could be me and PB - it has been a frustration of late to put it nicely...

Did I say'providing I don't screw anything else up...'?

Well, almost - soon after I took the photos in the last post I dropped Gustav on the floor. Damage was minor - one leading edge flap fell off and a rudder pedal eventually came out of the tail wheel opening.

So carried on regardless, U/C, pitot, antenna, wheels and exhaust on and a flat coat. And so it is done:

Even managed to find a squadron badge to suit this plane. It is the plane that ended up in the Duxford IWM collection and was made flyable then crashed only a couple of years back.

I was happy with the result using lasercut paper seatbelts and will use them again. Also happy with the result of the canopy masking, probably my best to date, and not with AM masks either.

Thanks very much to Mustang for hosting this GB. There have been a lot of great 109s in evidence and some great colour schemes to boot.

This is not the end for my 109, it is heading over to the Aces GB to play in it's second act.
