Hi all -- the Hobbycraft -D is finished, and the gallery photos will happen in the morning. It's great to have another one done!

Joe, absolutely gorgeous! I shall add these photos to my reference file of great 109s, with your permission! The base came out a treat and the figure sets off the plane wonderfully!

Triple thumbs up!

I'm gonna go with done here .  The glue is still wet on the groundwork.....LOL.  To recap it's the 1/48 Hasegawa Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 in the markings of Anton Hackl of JG II around August of 1943 when JG II was assigned to Reich defense.  Hackl was a 192 kill ace with 34 of those being heavy bombers.

Reference the kit, it was the "Experten" boxing which came with Hackl's markings.  Its nicely engineered, but in my opinion somewhat basic.  I have built many over the years and they do just fall together.  It does need a resin pit, or at least some PE in there.   My issues, or should I say confusion, lyes in trying to use the correct parts for the particular variant I'm building.  Then all the "cut this off...shave that....fill this" stuff.....its mind boggling to me and I usually forget something.  For example, this one has two dimples on the port fuselage which was for an umbrella on tropical versions, not this theater.  I think I used the wrong cannon blister on the starboard side too.  I did remember to shave off the scoops in the canopy.  Anyways, on this build, I used a True Details cockpit and Quickboost guns which I found in the stash.

The Reheat figure was found to be nicely detailed.  I painted "Major Tony" with Tamiya paints and drybrushed with lighter versions of that color.  The skin tones were done with Model Master Enamels with the same techique.  It was all given a brown detailer wash.  Figure painting is really not my forte but I'm trying to improve in this area.  To me, these models just look better with a pilot standing next to them and the chute at his feet is a bonus.  I may eventually branch into vehicles and such too.

I may try the Zveda F model one of these days just to see how it compares.  I heard its better than Hasegawa's kit. I still have 2 G-2's and a G-10 in the stash.

If you'll have me, there's a good chance I'll do another in here.  Thanks for having me and it was a pleasure to be amongst friends again...

Joe

BrandonK -- many thanks!

BrandonD -- I'll PM you in a moment!

Lawdog -- that is just gorgeous beyond words!!! Oh, and the white crosses indicated a 'schwarmfuhrer' aircraft, Jay found that info in one of his references.

I'm home from work and looking at the radio antenna. I found a ref last night to early 109s, especially in Spain, not being fitted with radio, but I'm guessing by 39 most of the early birds had been retrofitted, especially those serving at home. I'll have one more look before I struggle with the EZ-line one more time (what an ironic name that is!)

Bish and all, many thanks for the kudos!

Matt: Bummer about the landing gear.  Those Brassins look awesome though.  I used a set of their wheels on a P-51 but I wasn't overly imressed.  Your plane is looking fantastic none-the-less...

John:  Gorgeous build.  Hard to believe thats 172nd scale, which makes it all the more impressive.

jubya70:  I'm glad you back is better. I used to be a machinist and lifted truck axles into a turret lathe all day for years.  Every now and then my lower back reminds me of those days.   As I age more often than not...

Mike: That D is awesome!  Have you addressed what the white crosses/question marks were for?  If you did I missed it....sorry.

Johnny:  It depends, sometimes they were modified in the field.  I had the same question for the G-6 I'm building and I ended up doctoring up the original splintering.  Heres what I went with....

Speaking of the G-6, I got a little more work done last night.  I got it decaled and Flory washed.  I pieced together the markings with old Aeromaster sheets.  I used the kit stencils and the tail kill board.  Interestingly, these went down fine.  Go figure....

On a side note, I got these Reheat figures off Ebay recently.  Ill probably add one to the base and the other for another 109 or 190.  They look kind of smug yeah?  We'll see how they paint up...

I'm hoping to wrap this build up tonight...

Joe

Question for the 109 gurus.  Is the upper wing camouflage on fritz and early gustav a hard edge or soft.  Thanks John

Check your refs. It varies BIG TIME!! Eastern front birds seemed to have a real soft edge on the camo lines. Not just the wings but fuselage as well.

Johnny, it's a soft edge but a very subtle one so not to much over spray.

Hey Thunderbolt,

I have the Hobbycraft Buchon on the bench right now, and I believe it came with the cowl gun barrels, which are certainly not used. If you want them, let me know, and I'll check tonight to make sure they are, in fact, included, and I can get them to you. I put them on my S-199, and after drilling out the barrels, they looked the part.

TBolt379 - Thanks for the offer.  I'll have to see where I am with a couple of other GB's first, and I may just do that.

On the Bench:  Lots of unfinished projects!  Smile

Thanks Doug and Mustang! Well, the pigment work is done, the oil streaks are done and the mast end of the antenna wire is fixed. I've tried three time to fix the other end but it won't have it... I'll try again tomorrow, and hopefully be posting the gallery pics soon after. I can't say the Hopbbycraft kit has been a fun build, but it has been a challenge. I'm thinking of ordering a set of -E guns from Quickboost, it turns out HC forgot to provide barrels for the cowl guns... Just as they forgot the formation lights and the pitot. Academy tooled a pitot plus a choice of alternate exhaust panels for their edition, but still no cowl guns. I'll post a pic with the extra details at a later date. I wrote to QB and suggested a detail set for the D, but they didn't reply.

I'm so looking forward to doing the Hasegawas, especially the G-6 in Hartmann's markings in 1:32!

Cheers, M/TB379

STFD637

Is it too late to jump in here? I was looking at a 109T-0 and a 2 seater!

Jump on in STF! We'll get you on the roster bud!

Matt: Man I hate to hear about the landing gear blues but think you'll be happier with that Eduard set up!! Good progress on the RLM 65 as well!!

John; That is some awesome work in 72nd scale! I envy your patience...............and your eyesight! lol

jubya70: I'm glad to hear your back is doing better. Being down or sick is no way to gain modeling time really because nine times out of ten when I'm sick the last thing I feel like doing is modeling. lol . Post some pics of your progress. We're all here to help bud!

Mike: I just flat out love that D model 109 you are doing! You're giving me inspiration to build my C model!!

Here's the -D with a batch of jobs done, most notably the canopy unmasked and touched up, the propeller mounted and the landing gear under her. The mass balances are on and painted too:

Jobs remaining -- oil stains on the underside in oil wash -- that takes a few minutes, same for the dust and carbon pigment work. The only major job is to rig the antenna wire. I almost didn't fit the mast -- the decal sheet shows this plane without a mast, and I've found photos of early 109s without the radio mast, but by March 1939 when this plane was in action in these markings it's a fair bet it had been fitted -- or a reasonable speculation.

With those tasks done I'll be happy to call this one finished. The next pics you see should be the hi-res gallery shots.

Jelliot -- as Bish says, there's always another GB for Luft subjects! If you fancy a nightfighter project, you're more than welcome over at Reich Defenders V: Hunters of the Dark, running through till the end of the year! (Okay, I'm plugging my own GB....!)

Good day guys. My back is better and I am able to get to work. I finally got some work done on my 109 today. I took the advice of using a needle in the pencil eraser for an applicator for the super glue. My cockpit still looks a shambles. I was going to not finish the PE in the cockpit but all the encouragement i received made me want to continue with my first time dealing with PE.  I am to embarrassed to post pictures of the mess. So when I get the fuselage together. I will post pictures.  Thank you all for the encouragement .

Hey guys, I have to apologize for my absence lately. I've been really busy for the last couple of days and had no time at all neither for modelling nor the forum. Things have calmed down though so I think I'll have some more free time from now on. I've got the intro post updated and I'll be catching up on everyone's progress in the next couple of days. Everything looks really fantastic so far though!
