Hi Everyone,

A little more progress on my Zero.  I repainted the seat and remembered this time to shoot the inside of the fuselage where the cockpit goes:

After I let the paint dry, I am ready to start gluing the cockpit together!  Yeah!

Well, sucked it up and grabbed an Iwata Eclipse BCS at HL with the coupon.  Will get to learn it after I get a couple of smaller jars for it.  Got this build and a couple of vehicles (MB Jeep, Renwall Mil. Wrecker and the 29 rat rod kit before I get into the RF and the Mustang.

Going to try the automotive foam door jamb tape ("round or oval shape about 1/2" diameter and sticky on one side) to deliniate the color line between green and white/gray on the Betty before painting overall white.  Still up in the air on the hino's before white though.  The white in the pics I have seen was not done all that well and was kind of mottled/splotchy in a lot of places.  Very hurried job to get to specs laid down and agreed to for color and markings.  Looking to do the crosses in paint since I don't print decals or have access to green decal sheet.

Hi Art,

I think Iwata makes the best air brushes.  I have the HP-SB Plus.  It does a great job.

Tates & PJ: Those look really good guys!

Tates: If you want a filter to 'pull everything together' and give a slightly faded look I think I'd go with a tan or light brown. I'm no expert though.

You guys are cranking out some fine builds!

I made a little progress on my Nate. The engine was assembled, painted and secured inside to the inside of the cowl ring. I cut a circle paper mask to protect it from the red paint. I also shot Tamiya IJA grey on the fuselage and wings then shot some Future to gloss up the finish to prepare it for decals and washes.

It's been a little while since I posted any WIP photos.  I found a little time over the last few days to work on the Zero.  I finished the cockpit, buttoned up the fuselage, and added the wing assembly and horizontal stabilizers.  There is a pretty good gap at the wing root that will require some filling.  At least it looks like an airplane now.  So far things have been progressing smoothly.  (Knock on wood).

Wow, that gun sight is tiny, your friend has really good eyes.

Again nice work on both though I even more on the Ki-55- I've said before how much I hate painting anything yellow!

tates

woah, how did you come by those molding flash sanders. And how can I get some?

Hi Tate,

The person has a really small operation.  Here is his FaceBook page:

https://www.facebook.com/HobbyElements

And here is his email address:

hobbyelements_info@yahoo.com

Just send him an email with your contact information along with your shipping address and which product you want to order and he can send you an invoice via PayPal.  It only took around 2 weeks to get mine after I sent the payment.

Ken, that turns out great, I remember you posting these sanding tips before on your own Berny Build and I thought I've got to get a set of these. I need to stop lollygagging around, they seem really useful.

Hi Everyone,

A little more progress on my Zero.  First, here is the seat the way it looked before I started to remove the molded on seat belts:

To remove the molded on seat belts, I thought I would try the new tool I recently bought:

I used the medium grade.  Here it is mounted in my Dremel:

Here is how the seat looked when I finished using the Dremel:

I smoothed it out using some sanding sticks:

Notice how the photo etch seat belts are still attached after all the abusive handling!  They are held on by Gator's Grip Hobby Glue.

Next step is to repaint the seat.

Ouch, that sucks Goldhammer, if it's one thing I hate is going back and fixing stuff. I ended up with a big splotch of gloss coat on the Hellcat I'm doing for Ken's Berny GB. It's on the underside so I'm not sure if it's worth taking a chance to make a bigger mess sanding it out.

Well, the best laid plans...... Am painting as a army/navy green and gray/white, put the insignia on her and then repaint in overall white, with virtually no weathering except for some on the landing gear and some exhaust.  Got the gray/white on this morning in the shop at work, and being cold, ran the daylights out of it.  So much for getting the green on today.  More work with the sandpaper.Crying

Probably would not hurt to get a better airbrush either.  This one is the $10.00 Harbor Freight one with the 5 jars included.

As long as you don't add coolant to the radial..............Oops

Yeah that's a pretty good one! Just pour the coolant over the top!!!

Tates: The brown looks fine to me in the photo, as PJ said shouldn't be too hard to lighten it with a light overspray or just post-shade it as he pointed out by lightening the centers of the panels.

Doug: Beautiful work there! As I said before I love the mottling, turned out perfectly! Going to post you to the front page now.

Alright all... I've completed my first build... All in all a typical Hasagawa kit, fairly well detailed and fit like a glove. This was not one of their higher priced kits and took a little pe and dressing to make it look better but still a great little ole kit to build.

Well... I have one more atleast I'd like to do in a bit, and thanks for having me, and thanks Cliff for hosting!

Doug

PS completed picture choice is yours.

Tates

Try a ever so slightly lighter brown sprayed on the center of the panels feathering out. That will give you an excellent weathered look. Filters will fade it even more.

Looks good so far.  You might be OK when the green goes on, at least by the pic and my box.  Unless you want her a little sun faded.

Wings going on mine this w/e and getting the green and gray done and ready for the white topcoat.
