Wow! There is some great working going on in this group build.

More computer problems and a trip kept me away from the workbench again, but I've made some progress on my F-6A. The decals are on and clear coated (Future first, then Model Masters clear flat) and I applied a burnt umber wask to the panel lines. Then I gave the whole model a light misting of Model Masters Afrika Khakibraun to blend the colors and give the model a faded, well-used look. I still need to weather the landing gear and I want to take a shot at airbrushing the exhaust stains. She's almost done.

Well, catch up time after being away for a couple weeks…
Been working on various subassemblies, will post some pics on my next update. Most of my “modelling time” has been in setting up my new workshop area.
The Hasegawa P-51Ds are not too bad, not quite Tamiya quality (fit, details) but much better than the old Revell/Monogram kits.
Joe – Look forward to your build! That is a great start!
Steve – Good look unpacking; we moved almost a year ago and I just started to put together my workshop area : )

Larry – Looks good, love the faded look.

I feel your pain J. Ithink I'm getting there, then I find another box in the garage.

Well folks time to bore you with another brief status update.

Color on the wing framework.  Color on the fuel tank.  Work on the gun bay and start up on the .5 cals in the wing.

I went with Yellow Zinc Chromate

I know not much.  Kind of boring.  I have stalled trying to figure out the color to use.  I went with my best guess and what was logical.

Well, I've finished my F-6A. Here are some shots of the finsihed model. I think I'd like the first one for the front page.

I'd also like to stick with the group. My next project will be an AM F-6B.

Best to all,

Larry

That’s a great looking build Larry, the weathering looks just right. The faded OD and red look perfect. Beauty job all around. The background doesn’t hurt either. Man that thing looks mean with cannons.
I updated the roster for you’re A-6B, although I wasn’t sure if that was going to be an AM kit as well.

Cody will get you up as soon as he can.

All, I've kinda gotten addicted to building Mustangs. My next build is going to be an Accurate Miniatures F-6B. Every example of this kit that I found built up online used the kit decals. I really wanted something different for my build. I found a set of decals (possibly by Superscale) that included markings for a Malcolm equipped F-6B nicknamed Jeanie. Jeanie was assigned to the 107th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group. The squadron flew out of LeMolay Aerodrome in France in 1944. Here's the kit and the aftermarket goodies that I plan to stuff into it:

There are some guys on the forum that feel that way about the ME-109.

I think I'm going to look for an A-36 and dress it up in Burma colors. The weathering on that would be awesome.

Thank you for being part of the GB. I updated your picture on the roster.

Thanks, CodyJ!

I've gotten a bit of work done on my F-6B. I like to use the Scale Aircraft Conversions metal landing gear struts. They're intended for the Tamiya kits, though, so the tail wheel won’t work without doing some surgery. The first photo shows the details of my not-really-a-Tamiya-clone tail wheel mount for the Accurate Miniatures Mustangs and the second one shows my new mount in the fuselage.

A forum member (GreenStyrene48) alerted me to the fact that the AM F-6B came with the nose for a P-51/F-6A (long, narrow carb intake). I did, however, have the remains of my first attempt at an A-36 in my spares box. A little flexing, a little prying, and a few off-color words separated the nose from the rest of the fuselage. I thought I’d managed it with no real damage, but as I was filling the bypass door with styrene strip, I noticed that I had broken off a sliver on the rear of the port side. A little strip styrene and some sanding took care of that. I’ve tried replacing the missing fasteners with HO scal Archer rivets; I plan to spray a coat of primer this weekend to see how they look.

Well, plan A for repairing the nose didn't work. A coat of primer revealed that the styrene strip patch looked pretty horrible. Plan B involved cutting away the damaged part along the scribed panel lines and patching in a piece cut from the incorrect nose included with the AM F-6B kit. I think this attempt is useable, though the one panel line (where the seam is) looks a bit exaggerated.

Here are the cockpit sidewalls. I still need to tweak a few details and add some weathering, but I think they look OK. Because I'll be using a Malcolm canopy, the interior on this build will be a bit more visible than on my other Mustangs, so I'm trying to put a little more effort into this cockpit. I used stencil decals on the starboard sidewall and I added the flare gun port to the port sidewall.

Sorry it took me some time to get back to you IZ. That B is looking good! Man you're really getting detailed with that tail wheel, and the cowling and office is really taking shape.

A brief update.

Been kind of out of the loop for a few weeks.  Fires in the area have thrown a great deal of smoke up and that has caused me some issues.  If you have not done so lately when you see one of the folks who risk injury or worse to fight fires, thank them.  They do not get the praise that they truly deserve.

Took me three weeks to get these to this point.  To be honest I am not completely happy with the way they look.

The flaps.

...

Next up is to try to detail the gun bay a bit and then maybe paint.

With rain finally and some cooler days and nights hopefully I can get back to feeling decent and get back to the bench more often.

All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged.

Work has kept me away from the workbench, but I have gotten the fuselage of my F-6B closed up and the instrument panel installed. For the first time I used the True Details instrument panel rather than the one that came with the kit. I did, however, dress it up with a photoetched piece from an Aires P-51B IP in my parts box. With the long weekend, I'm hoping to get this bird ready for the paintshop.

Hoping everyone enjoys the weekend.

I've started my 1/72 Tamiya bird.  Interior walls are painted, and photoetch is attached. Sorry for the crappy pics, I only have my cell phone camera at the moment.  Don't know whose markings she'll be in, right now smart money is on a post war scheme from the Dutch East Indies.

Picked up this kit awhile back on the cheap. I'll be adding the P-51D that is included with this kit into this group build. I'll have some pictures up tonight of the progress I've made so far before I start assembly. It is going to be built straight OOB. So far its not too bad, quite a bit of flash, but its easily being cleaned up. Not too bad for a kit that's almost 30 years old.

I got you down Jeremy. Did you still want to build the 1/32 B model?
That’s a cool combo pack. I don’t believe I have ever seen that kit before.

Yes, I'm still going to do the B model as well. I figured this would be a quick build and I wanted to contribute something.

Here's the boxart for the 1/32 B that I will be doing (only exception is that I will be doing her as the Boise Bee).

I had never seen this one either, I found it on EB a while back and got it for less than list price with free shipping. It was a sealed box. It's definitely old, the instructions sheets are pretty yellowed; however, the decal sheets look okay, I'll find out as soon as I try to use them if they are going to disintegrate.

The B-17 will be kept on the shelf awhile.  Way too many things ahead of it.

Hello, all.

I hope asking questions is OK. I'm working on an Accurate Miniatures F-6B. I plan to mark it as Jeanie, an aircraft assigned to the 107th Tac. Recon. Squad / 67th Recon. Group at LeMolay Airdrome, France in 1944. That aircraft - according to the decal sheet - had a Malcolm hood, which is one of the reasons I chose it. The problem is, I can't find any photos of Jeanie or any other Mustang with a Malcolm hood that clearly shows the whip antenna (the decal sheet drawing actually shows Jeanie with the standard antenna mast, which I guess is fine if you don't need a pilot to get in or out of the aircraft). Can anyone point me to a nice clear photo of a whip antenna installation so that I can model it correctly?

Thanks all,Larry
