This is a rough drawing of the base that includes a German train coming through a mountain portal, a motorized column on an elevated road next to another mountain and a small stream and a pond thats fed from one of them. I have all the pieces that I'll need and the materials that should bring it to life. 

A little cleanup but the kit is going together nicely. I think I'm going to prime it as I go along.

Wayne thats funny, but not so much your raptors, wow those are so cool and thats one gigantic barrel.

Wow, that is awesome Wayne- what would be even cooler if the big gun fired velociraptors like a human cannonball! Bad guys are sitting in a room and suddenly BAM! an angry raptor crashes though the ceiling!!!

That's incredible Wayne, huge.  I just went through a mini block myself. Once Spring started, lawn work, open houses, showing the house and putting my little tv tray/workbench away, walks with the wife just got to be too much and something had to give. Not to mention I was going through my typical change of interests (from planes to armor, to ships, to sci fi, back to ships etc.). Now things have kinda settled into a routine and I've been modeling for a hour or two in the evenings and maybe some on the weekend.

You just do what you gotta do, and we'll be here when you get back to the K5.

TERRY the pink foam insulation works good for elevations according to a friend. some acrylic caulking to make the edges look nice and paint and texture away.  PS you are insane and coming from me that puts you way out there

i hit a wall about 3 weeks ago so haven't done much. really putzing around with a number of builds but no focus to finish. i know all of us have this happen from time to time.  the K-5 may be on hold until mid-june as i have a local regionals coming up and have other things to finish. here is the heavy flatcar. i will build a loading dock at rear and along back side but am thinking abandoned, rusty, weed infested with some junk on the bed. maybe a critter or 2 will appear as well or parts to a TYPE XXVII or luft 46 thingie. lots of fun with oil washes and dry brushing with more to come.

speaking of critters here is a six pack of 1/35 primed velociraptors. these are going to be fun to paint and my mind is awhirl with dioramas. have to investigate how to preserve real plants for the dioramas. just something different to reignite the spark.

and the K-5 barrel is coming along. popped a seam but easily fixed. this plastic melts easier with testors glue but that is working to my advantage. still have some wiring to finish up near the breech which has put me off for a bit.  KV-2 in background is just for scale but will go in a thrown track abandoned dio for regionals. will add some 37mm and 50mm shell dents. picked up some new stuff to make bases. yes that is 2 feet long,

Thanks for the advise, the points well taken. I've been working on pieces for this for about a year and i'm just about ready to start some construction on the base. Just yesterday I laid out a pattern and have everything in place, I'm thinking about closing it in a bit. I started at 28X48, then 24X48 but after seeing the train and vehicles I think I can go to 22 or 20" X 48 without any compromises.

Terry, that diorama sounds cool! Just one word of warning though to be careful- I've started too many large dios and then then burned out half-way though them!

Rob I mentioned i'm working on a diorama thats about 28"X48" all in 1/72 and this is the main piece for the train. I already have a lot of pieces just waiting to go, so it'll include a 4 piece train, a German column of up to 8 vehicles (depending on space), a river, some elevation and a few more things. I've been laying everything out but my biggest concern is how to photograph it. I have a friend that does some photography who I think will help.

I should be through sometime this summer.

Moving right along Terry, I have a few other GB's to start/finish before I start mine, but it looks like it's going to be a fun build. Are you going to put men in it?

I did pull out the B-4 and start working on the major sub-assemblies. I'm maybe 1/3rd of the way into the thing so far.

Quick update on the Karl. The parts are a nice fit after a little cleanup. Theres some real nice detail  throughout the kit that should make for a nice finish.   

With the Hasegawa Karl, theres a little play in the wheels. Steve if you take out two wheels and an axle, they just slip on without any adhesive, you can match it up to see.

I noticed while I was building the WR360, that the scale between the Trump kit and the Hase kit are slightly different. When I build my track, I'll have to adjust the track gauge just the slightest between the locomotive and the Karl. I don't remember at the moment which one was larger, but I believe the Trump kit was just a tad larger gauge than the Hase.

That looks perfect to me.

I think it doable, but making track from real materials and adding appropriate weathering makes for some realistic track. This photos in 1/35 and the rail and cleats are plastic, but what I'm using for 1/72 is HO rails with metal cleats and spikes and treating basswood for the ties. I think it looks close to the real thing.

I was wondering if you used the HO scale tracks would it easier to just modify the tracks? Maybe break the metal rails off and then re-cement them in place at the right width?

Steve i'm just getting started with a quick update. Theres a lot of detail in this small kit and so far its straight forward with the exception of a little clean up. I put the track together just to be used as a guide to keep the frame square and the wheels level.

I agree, if it was part of a moving HO train I think it would be very convincing.

That's a cool idea regarding the HO trucks.  It probably doesn't look too far off scale either. He also did a nice job of coming up with a WR360 replica as well. The hood is a little wide and it's missing the catwalks, but I'd be clueless of the difference if I hadn't built one.

Rob I found a railgun on Ebay, the seller is JTG. He states that the gun is a Karl in 1/72 mounted on HO wheels???  I don't know if the Karl will operate on the tracks.

Rob I've seen a german rail gun thats available in HO scale. Its nor a Karl-Morser or a K-5 but its large a detailed. I'm sure the manufacturers took some liberties when they designed it. I'll see if I can find it. Terry

I should have googled before my comment above...I just learned that HO scale is 1/87 scale, so, those 1/72 wheels won't fit....

I'm not a model railway guy, but, is there any scale of model railway (H, O, HO???) that can match close enough to match that Morser's scale?

I was going to make my own tracks anyway, and put the WR360 in front of it.

Steve I think we need to avoid those tracks, even trying to doctor them up as best I can they're still going to look like a plastic base. Other than the little flash, i've studied the booklet and the parts and it looks straight forward. We'll see….
