GMorrison:

There's a lot of options and opinions floating around about dating the BoB.

The RAF website says it began in "early July" (http://www.raf.mod.uk/history/thebattleofbritain.cfm)

History Channel says it started on 10 July, 1940 (http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/the-battle-of-britain-begins).  Britannica seems to agree (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/79855/Battle-of-Britain).  So does Battle of Britain blog, with the Kanalkampf (http://battleofbritainblog.com/).

The BBC says it started in the "middle" of July (http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/battle_of_britain)

And the Battle of Britain website (http://www.battleofbritain1940.net/0021.html) further adds this compilation of opinion:

Richard Townshend Bickers in Battle Diary - Battle of Britain claims that there were four phases.
Phase 1: Aug 8 - Aug 18. Phase 2: Aug 19 - Sept 5. Phase 3: Sept 6 - Oct 5. Phase 4: Oct 6 - 31.

Norman Franks in Fighter Command Losses also claims there were four phases but with different dates.
Phase 1: July 10 - Aug 7. Phase 2: Aug 8 - Sept 6. Phase 3: Sept 7 - 30. Phase 4: Oct 1 - Oct 31.

Derek Wood & Derek Dempster in the Narrow Margin claim that there were five phases.
Phase 1: July 10-Aug 7. Phase 2: Aug 8-23. Phase 3: Aug 24-Sept 6. Phase 4: Sept 7-30. Phase 5: Oct 1-31.

Len Deighton in Fighter-The True Story of The Battle of Britain claims four phases.
Phase 1: July 10 - Aug 11. Phase 2: Aug 12 - 23. Phase 3: Aug 24 - Sept 6. Phase 4: Sept 7 - 15.

John Ray, Battle of Britain - New Perspectives uses only three phases in his book.
Phase 1: July 10 - Aug 18. Phase 2: Aug 19 - Sept 7. Phase 3. Sept 7 - Oct 16.

The owner of the above site leans toward starting the BoB as soon as the Battle of France was finished--referencing Churchill's famous remark.  That would put the beginning of the battle into June.

Based on all this, it seems to me that--although the GB might not start till August--it would be OK to build something that may have been flying around in England and over the Channel convoys as early as June, 1940 and continuing through the summer.

My opinion only; I defer to our GB leader of course for the definitive answer about what does and doesn't fit into the GB.

And we can note from above that most British opinion is that the battle ended in September or October, not when Hitler decided to postpone SeaLion indefinitely.

Lots of room for historical opinion, one of the things that keeps history interesting, I think.

I have a 1/72 Special Hobby Avro Anson with some PE, in the stash. My only question would be, it's the one that shot down two 109's and damaged a third, in June 1940. But it probably was still around in August.

I'll crack that out.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I would like to enter in these three aircraft from AirFix's BBMF Collection kit.  Avro Lancaster, and two Supermarine Spitfire's.  All three are in 1/72 scale.

On my Work Bench: Tamiya Ford GT 1/24

Up Coming: ?

scottrc:

Amazon lists some:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=1%2F72+Heinkel+He-111&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3A1%2F72+Heinkel+He-111

I think Airfix's offering is of a type too late for the BoB, but Revell's and some of the Hasegawa's would work.

I would be interested, however I'm not sure I would have time with all my other commitments.I'll keep watch and let you know later. If I do, it will be something like a 1/144 Jerry bomber (HE 111 or JU88)

I was hoping for a BOB GB. Put me down for TBD.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Anyone know of a HE111 kit in 1/72 that is currently available?

Welcome aboard Scottrc and Raven728!

Blacksheep214-the build runs approximately four months, from 13 August to 18 December.  It begins on Eagle Day (when Germans officially began air ops against GB) to 18 December, when Hitler officially abandoned the invasion of Britain.  For those who have Netflix, there's a new documentary on the BoB.  I tried to watch last week, but kept falling asleep.  Not a commentary on the show, was just knackered.

This will give you a start at least:

"In August 1940 the first Spitfire IIs went to No 611 Squadron at Digby, and during the following month  Nos 19, 74 and 266 Sqns received the new variant.  From then on the Mark II replaced the Mark I in several units, the squadrons equipped with the former being concentrated in south-east England where the fighting was heaviest."

Question -  Were there Mk. II Spitfires used during the BoB?

I'm happy to see this GB going to happen, now I need to order me that spit.  I always liked the RAF colors of that period.

Thanks for the info guys.  I'd really like to build my 1/48 Eduard Profipack Bf 110D for this build, but 4 months is not enough time for me to tackle this kit.  I'm just way too slow.  I may have to pick something else up.

Here are some badges resized.

I know what you mean about the Airfix re-tools and new molds, lewbud.  I'm looking forward to these becoming available.

The Battle of Britain has really got my interest for the last few years, so I've collected a lot of Spitfires, Hurricanes, other assorted types, and a lot of decals in the stockpile.  I'm always ready to build them.

And here's a link to a good site about Luftwaffe camouflage and markings.  Maybe you know about it already.  I found it pretty useful for the 1939-40 GB.

Oh, nothing specific; I'm an Anglophile at heart and am always amazed at the incredible bravery and tenacity of those British pilots (average age: 20!) going toe to toe against overwhelming odds. Just an amazing story.

CMK, that is a fantastic badge!  You'll probably need to resize it smaller however.  Thanks for making that, it is most appreciated.  Andy, Brandon, and Craig, welcome aboard!  Steve, join us when you're ready.  I have a feeling there's a pretty good story behind your emotional attachment, I'm pretty sure the class would like to hear it if you feel like sharing.  Jack, are you in?  Craig, Jack is right with the color scheme, although it looks like the Splinter Scheme changed somewhat between the Norwegian Campaign and the BoB.  Unfortunately, I don't have access to a scanner at the moment otherwise I'd post some images that would help you.  As for me, I can go so many directions with most of Airfix's new tool 1/72 stuff in the stash.  I need to get their new Do-217z (it's gorgeous!), and am waiting for the new B.1 model Stuka, and a new tool He-111.  Taka, taka, taka!

I'm only guessing, but I'd stick with official colours of the Luftwaffe during that period:

71 dunkelgrun and 02 grau uppers with 65 hellblau lowers.

I saw that on the instructions.  I'm just not sure what paint scheme to use.  There are nice color drawings toward the back for the other campaigns, but not the BoB.  Which should I use.  Thanks.

Craig

Craig, I'm pretty sure Eduard  came out with just the one boxing of the 110D in 1/48 (besides the Royal boxing) and according to the pdf instructions, a BoB markings version is included.  It's found on the first page of instructions.  The aircraft carries an emblem of the British Isles enclosed in a cross hairs.

Oops, I forgot - I have a Tamiya/Italeri 1:48 Stuka with BoB markings. So I will definitely build that, and some fighter or other to shoot it down.

Yes, please put me down.

I'm hoping to snag the new-tool Airfix Hurricane in 1:48, but if I can't, I'll do a 1:48 Tamiya Spitfire Mk. I or a Bf-110 or something.
