1990-1991 Gulf War 25th Anniversary Group Build

I finished the flight deck markings, sorta. The only decals are the red/white foul line and the ship number, spot numbers and warning stripes at the elevators. All the rest is painted or decal stock. I still have to add a dashed white line down each side of the yellow stripe.

The Green monster also progresses. I seriously screwed it up, after the first color coat of Tamiya acrylic, I sanded at it with paper towel. it was looking great, but had a layer of fine dust. So I wiped it with tissue soaked in Isopropyl and it really wrecked the paint.

I sort of fixed it with another pass at the rubbing, and then future coated it.

I think the armored car needs serious dust. Looking good though.

The mud mover looks good so far.

Ok here's the latest. Got the fuse buttoned up, and parts for next step off sprues and ready for attachment. There are lots of seams to hide but wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Fit was pretty fair actually Got one day off and starting back in the morning so hope to get a bit of bench time. Anyway here is a pic.

I worked a little on the "Lion" today. I cut off some road arms so I could reposition them later. I also "modified" the aft fuel tanks to reflect the heat they would be exposed to.
I’m still firming up my thought for the diorama. Possibly knocked out either on the sand or in the city. I’m thinking a city scene on a street.

I have the major building done on the M2 so tonight was the night to shoot the color. Got everything ready and shot the first coat...wait, the color is awful brown...double check paint label, US Army/Marine Sand, but its the color is off, by his time I have sprayed the whole model hoping that it would dry lighter, nope. So off to so research, seems that the Testors MM US Army/Marinf Sand  is  incorrect for Shield/Desert Storm period vehicles...dangit...(although it does make a decent primer) so I had some older  MM Armor Sand, its close but still a tad bit grey. After some more research it seems the MM Sand FS33351 is suppose to be a dead match to CARC for the Desert Storm period...since I have no local hobby stores, its off  to the web to order a few bottles...we shall see when gets here. So I am at a standstill on the main build, time to start painting the accessories, till my(hopefuuly correct color) paint gets here.

Well this is where I am so far. My idea will be to pose the “Lion” brewing up as it veered onto a street curb. Of course there will be a street on one side of the curb and sand on the other.
Now I wasn’t over there, I was at a LORAN station in Montana at the time, so I have no idea if this is a plausible scene.
The cotton is the start of the flame. I will add to it applying layers of acrylic pouring medium and cotton. I ordered some high intensity white LED’s to insert inside and will stiffen the flame with wire.

I'm trying to recreate a similar scene. This Syrian T-72 was hit by a RPG-29.

 

Other than the Battle at Khafji, there was not any urban fighting during Desert Storm, and even then I do not think that there was any Iraqi T-72's at that battle. I was in the AO, but not at Khafji, so you might want to research that to see if any were destroyed there. All the T-72's that we destroyed were in the open desert, airfields and at Rumaiyla Oilfields.

Steve, I would go with the open desert. Even if you wanted it on the highway, I would still remove the curb as from what I saw out there once you got out of the town's the roads had none.

A lot of the bigger highways had an open space between carrage ways often with a ditch running dow the middle.

Easy to fix at this point.

I got the main coat of paint layed down, I still have to apply the clear gloss coat for decaling.

Since this kit did not come with a FLIR pod, I decided to make one out of sheet styrene and miliput. I still have to do some refine sanding and pray for the best.

Nice work all around guys! Sorry I have not been able to keep on top of this in the past few days when so much great stuff was happening.

With a combination of all three. 

Looking at some videos of Hellfire's, there's nothing left of the target! Videos of TOW's at least leave something standing.

Some of the times they blew the turrets off when the ammo cooked off, sometimes they just burned. It was spectacular watching turrts flipping through the air. The TOW IIA's we were shooting where not top attack like Hellfires or the newer TOW IIB Aero's. So our hits were around the top of the roadwheels and did not always cause a tank to "pop its top"

I think I know what I'm going to do now. It will be on the causeway, halfway off the road, on a slope, with a TOW hole above the road wheels and cooking off out of a hatch, mallet and barrel. This will give me the opportunity to do more damage to the side.

 

Here is a pic of a T-72 that was hit with a TOW, maybe it will help you with your build. The TOW hit just above and between the 3rd/4th roadwheels.

This is one of the flame pillars with the LED’s installed. I will be placing it in the hatch and add black smoke when I complete the build. What do you think?

Looks just like the real deal!

Nice work, and extra for going the distance and working it out.

Maybe put some black on the very top.
