Last blast, let's go out in a blaze of glory! Weekend Group Build the 2015 Edition.
Posted by lewbud on Saturday, October 10, 2015 6:55 PM

(Cue circus music) Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Step right up and feast your eyes on one of the rarest sights in the world (at least my world, that is!)!  What's that you say, a flightless Dodo, a one eyed one horned flying purple people eater? NO! It's a finished model!  Not only that, it was built in 48 hours!  Can't be done you say?  Au contraire, mon frere! A bevy of beautiful models were turned out during last year's soiree! So saddle up, put your boots on and join me for a wild weekend (or weekends depending) of model building. Just remember, when touring Universal Studios, ask for Babs.

The rules:

1. Have fun.

2. Build something simple.  Your humble scribe tried to build three kits in a weekend, not recommended.  I also tried a Mach 2 kit one year, also not recommended.  HOWEVER, if you have a sadistic streak in you and think you are up to the challenge of a Mach 2, or a threesome, the rest of us will gladly sit back, eat popcorn and root for you (to fail or succeed, both will be entertaining).  That being said, several twofers were completed last year. This is a chance for you to blow out the cobwebs of a difficult build, or just get SOMETHING finished for the year.

3. Have fun. THIS IS IMPORTANT!

4. Take pics, lots of pics.  Forty eight hours isn't a lot of time, but there is always time to take a pic or two while something's drying.  Don't worry about sleep, you'll get all you need when you're dead.  Besides I/we like to see others slaving away, getting stuff done.

5. The timeframe is 48 Hours.  If you start at 5:00 on Friday, you must be done by 5:00 on Sunday.

6. Did I mention HAVE FUN?!

7. Crossovers are allowed. As much, or as little detail is allowed.  Remember, you only have 48 hours.

8.  Only unstarted kits allowed.  I know, other builds allow partially started kits, this one doesn't.  This adds to the drama and challenge of the build.  Post a proof of life shot at the beginning of your build.  I like to have my cell phone in there to time stamp the start as well.

Dates:  That's right, I said dates.  I realize that every one has crazy schedules, may not be off on Saturday or Sunday, etc.  Plus we're going to be getting into the crazy part of the year soon.  Last year we started the first weekend of December and ended with Bufflehead pulling off a Christmas miracle with a divine scale P-47.  Right now the start dates are kind of open at the moment.  There are eight weeks until the start of December. I was kind of thinking a mid-November start, but we'll see. Who wants to become a modelling god and make plastic tremble at the sound of your name? The line starts behind me.

Thereis something I've never seen here. I think it would be fun to do an egg plane by Hasagawa. Could I do an Egg P-47?

You beauty Lewbud. I've been a participant in this thing several times over the years and it's my favorite GB. I'm in. I'm thinking Airfix 1/72 DHC Chipmunk (yes, another one) for my build, but it may change between now and then.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

greentracker and taxtp, welcome aboard!  Greentracker, the egg plane is more than welcome and has been done in the past.  Just not a P-47.  Tony, look forward to Chipmunk the sequel.

Let's not pick the thanksgiving Day weekend (here in the US).

It's always too busy for me and I feel guilty crashing out a model while others are doing things around me.

Easy there Owl, this build hasn't started yet.  However, if you want make a practice run go right ahead.  With regards to the US Thanksgiving holiday, this build has a history of carrying several weeks past the start date.  If we start in mid-November, being that this is an international group, there is the possibility that someone might be building that weekend.  If you don't feel comfortable building that weekend, just pick an earlier weekend.  This build usually peters out after the third weekend, so Thanksgiving weekend would probably be the last weekend of the build anyways.  Assuming a mid November start, that is.

Lew, after busting my chops the past few years trying to crunch out a 1/48 aircraft in 48 hours, I'm going to take the easy way out and do a 1/48 Tamiya V-1. Less pieces than I have digits.

This is always fun and a great way to get you out of a rut.  I'll have to see if I have something suitable.

Ladies and gentlemen (and I use that term extremely loosely with some of you, you know who you are!), if it please the group, this build shall start on the auspicious day Friday 13 November and conclude the following Sunday.  However, as stated in the rambling rant of the first post that passes sorrowfully for the rules, builders need not be constrained by the first weekend if their schedules don't allow it.  Simply pick a 48 hour period that works for you (after the official start date that is), and go for it.  For those of you who are undecided, and everyone knows you are because it's in the second post, you have approximately 28 days to come up with something spectacular.  Now for the really important stuff, the badge.  In keeping with tradition, it needs to be a Calvin and Hobbes themed badge.  Gentleman GMorrison has a sample in his latest post.  If that pleases everyone, slap the dates on that bad boy and call it done.  If there is/are someone/s else out there in the ether that wants to give it a shot, post it up and they'll fight it out in the Thunderdome. Good to see this thing coming together.

Okay, I'm in, but build date will most likely be later in November or early Dec. as my schedule will permit. I'll update as we get closer. I have NO IDEA what I'll build. Nothing in the stash is gonna go in 48 hrs, I'm not Toshi, just not that fast. I'll look online and at the LHS and see if I can find something worthy.

Geezsh! Who you calling a "Gentlemen?" Why I've never been so insulted in my life! Despite that, I'm in with a 1/25 Lindberg 1997 Ford Crown Victoria.

Okay, I may live to regret this, but I picked one from my stash that I may be able to do if I have absolutely no problems.

Put me down for a 1/48 Trumpeter Mig-3 Late Version.

I'm in. I'm thinking right now either something in 1:72 with wings or 1:48 with treads.

Edit: Airfix 1:72 Mig-15 with Eduard PE. I'm going to try the new Vallejo metallic paint on it.

Well, I can't pass this up.  I'm in but with what, I'm not quite sure yet.  I am waiting for a new battery for my camera to show up too.  Looking toward mid November.  Can't wait to start!  Did someone say 5 this year?
