This is what I shall be attempting this upcoming weekend. As it is a new-tool Airfix kit, I shall only have to wave a bottle of Tamiya Extra-Thin over it while standing at the crossroads at midnight and all the parts will assemble themselves, right?

Cat Daddy, glad to have you aboard for Round Two!

For those that are wondering when this build will end, probably the first weekend in December.  HOWEVER, if there is sufficient demand the second week in December at the latest.  Now, for my continuing saga of the Grumman Cat Story.  When we last left our hero, he had just gone to bed Friday night/early Saturday morning with two Grumman kitties on the table.  He woke up Saturday morning and stumbled to his table and began to build.

There was a really cool wolf's head that was supposed to go around the nose, it tore itself to pieces as I tried to apply the port side, was majorly bummed.Boo Hoo

Forty Eight hours exactly, and she's done.

The glory shots.

I hope you have enjoyed this build as much as I did.  For those of you who didn't make Round 1, see you at the bench Friday!  Don't know what I'm building yet, but be there or be square!

I finally got my Spitfire done. To be honest, I've made more mistakes on this model than I have done for many years, mainly due to breaking some of the long established 'guidelines' that I've got in order to get the thing done at a frantic pace. I was feeling a little jaded, but then I've just reviewed the completed models on page one and found it a bit inspiring, so thanks to you guys, I am going to have another crack at it this weekend.

It's currently Friday morning here, and I plan to start later this evening, so I have the rest of the day to finalise my subject (victim ! ).

Would you mind updating my entry on page one please, it currently says Chipmunk, but I changed it to the Airfix 1/72 Spitfire FR Mk XIX.

Now that I mention it....

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Tony, nice job on the Spit! Hope mine turns out that good! Cat daddy, have that in my stash as well. The early Airfix new tools aren't quite shake and bakes, but they do build up nice. Looking forward to your build. Caveman, what's in the works for Round Two? Also need a pic of the Forger for the front page. I will be attempting a 1/72 Zvezda Sukhoi T-50 with its rather interesting blue and grey dazzle scheme. Who else will be dancing with the plastic devil in the pale moonlight this weekend?

OK, I'm in again with yet another Airfix 1/72 Spitfire XIX, purchased specifically for this GB.

Last week I got distracted and started two of them, one is still unfinished. To avoid any confusion, I won't touch it this weekend. Here's is it's current status:

I'll leave it as is until after the weekend.

Here is my starting photo for this weekend:

You can see I kicked off at 7.42pm, Friday night.

Here is my midnight update:

Got the cockpit done, fuselage sealed up, and a few other bits. Also played with the dog, kids, ate dinner, chatted to wife, etc'

I haven't quite settled on the scheme yet, I am leaning towards the Turkish decals on the Xtradecal sheet, or the other kit scheme.

More plastic fantastic tomorrow....goodnight and good luck if you're having a crack at it this  weekend.

Cheers

Tony

Well, not much to show yet, but again looks are decieving.  Things should button up shortly and it will start to look like a Tornado.  Hopefully to primer in a few hours.

I'm watching the clock creep toward quittin' time so I can go home and start Weekend Build Round 2. I ordered some Vallejo Metal paint from Spruebrothers on Tuesday and it arrived today, just in time for the build.

Officially started last night at 9:00 pm CST. Basically zip got done because I thought I was out of the light gull grey needed to paint the pit, landing gear bays, and the intake trunks. Got the intakes assembled and primered, then did some research and went to bed. Got up this morning and inventoried the paint supply and found not one, but two bottles of light gull grey. So, in the last three and a half hours, I've assembled and painted the ejection seat, painted and decalled the cockpit, installed the intake ductwork, and assembled the panels that cover the intakes, and puttied some seams. Hopefully at the twenty four hour mark, she'll have the first of many colors on. Keep building!

I could have used that gull grey. I had every color I needed but that one. i mixed dark grey and white into an approximation. I managed to get nose ballast this morning and I'm off shortly to assemble the fuselage and get primer on it.

Here's where I finished last night - cockpit and interior done, but lacking three grams of weight that would fit in the nose. After a quick visit to the hardware store this morning, I managed to get the fuselage weighted and put together, along with the wings and tail. I also pulled the wheel cover doors so they can get primered along with the body. At this point, I may be clear coating the whole thing at midnight so I can get decals on tomorrw morning. At least now it looks like an airplane.

Lewbud,

I may be able to do a second build. I have a 1/144 Dragon K5 rail gun and I'm off half a day Wednesday. If I start Tuesday evening after I get Home, work on it all Wednesday except for 4 hours at work and some work time Thursday morning... I may be able to pull it off.

Steve, bring it on! We'll be watching! A question for the group. When I changed the name of the thread, did y'all have to resubscribe to it? Or did it show up with the new name? Cat daddy, what markings are you going with?

John Glenn's Mad Mig Marine. It's the first Sabre I've built and Glenn is historically significant.

If I'm subscribed, which I am, it just shows up with the new name.

Thanks Steve. It seemed like things dropped off after I changed the name and I was wondering if that was why. Nice choice of markigs, Cat daddy.

Well, there is just about 2 hours to go and I'm afraid I have to admit defeat.  The kit was a mess to put together and I just didn't have the time to do all these decals.  I will finish it, and my nephew can have a new toy to fly around the living room battling evil.  As I said, the kit ended up beinf a real POS with some significant "short shots"  that I noticed waaaaay too late to be able to deal with properly.  I must say that I do like these Akan paints.  Although brittle, I really like the colors.  Down, but not out.  I WILL finish another one next weekend.  What that will be, I'm not sure yet.

Nice work all around on this thread and congrats to all finishes!  I find I'm too busy to look at everyone else's work during my own build sessions, but now I can take the time to appreciate all the great work.

Till next weekend......

I'm still here lewbud, just been busy working.  I'm planning on starting my kit on Friday, 11/27....don't know if that's round 2 or 3.  After digging through the stash I found this and thought it would be perfect for the GB.  Only 60 parts or so, no indy link tracks to assemble, basic O.D., and simple assembly. Plus I don't have one of these on my model shelf yet!

Sorry to hear that Caveman, but I like the attitude. Post pics when it's done, I love Tiger Meet aircraft. Bufflehead, love the classics. I think it's a later boxing but part of me wonders if there is a Shep Paine diorama guide in there. Twenty four hours to go, and I have something that looks like an airplane. Getting ready to mask the canopy, and shoot some paint.

Primered...

... aaaand ... painted!

I painted a second light coat about two hours ago (because the first coat had some boo boos), watched a movie ("Point Break" with Lee Marvin), and just now sprayed it with Future so I can decal it tomorrow, get the landing gear and other delicate parts on, and then call it a day. Once a year is enough for a 48-hour build I think.

I used Vallejo's new Metal Color along with their gloss black primer. I've never used bare metal foil or Alclad, but I really like the Vallejo product. Both went on well straight from the bottle. I usually airbrush at about 18 psi, but for the Metal Color I actually went down to about 15 psi. Vallejo suggests letting the primer cure for 12 hours before beginning the masking process. I agree with that. I let it dry for about 5 hours and felt it could use more time. If I wasn't doing the 48-hour build, I would have let it sit overnight. The label for the Metal Color says it drys in 5 minutes, but I'd let it cure overnight also if I had the time. After two hours, it was dry to the touch, but didn't feel completely dry/cured the way Tamiya acrylics feel after several hours. It was easier to use and clean than Tamiya, nonetheless and Tamiya is pretty easy to use to clean.

Nice work Cat Daddy, it's coming along.

I hear you Caveman, thatthing just wasn't going to get done in a weekend. brave attempt though.

I feel much more in control with my Spitfire. I've got a little over two hours to go, but have to cook and serve dinner for the family too, as my wife has a bug at the moment.

Think I can still do it.

Progress so far...

Preshaded it last evening.

Sprayed the underside with light blue at midnight. I mixed a couple of Tamiya colours to approximate the Federal Standard colour that the Xtradecals recommend, using a ratio  Ifound on the net, looks ok. Then set the alarm for 6.30 to spray the upper side green this morning, using Tamiya XF-13, which is the recommended FS colour for it.

Then off to a swap meet for the morning, home this afternoon, lunch, a quick clear coat and decals.

These are for a Turkish PR. Mk 19, circa 1950. Quite striking I think. I like the preshading too, and haven't had to mix enamels an acrylics which I needed to d olast weekend, so a lot less problems. All the other bits, prop, spinner, wheels and exhaust are ready to glue on. I just need to do that, flat coat, remove the canopy and camera masking and a few paint chips and I've made it.

Cheers

Tony
