Ok, it's 9.  Here I go again.  A Trumpeter SA-6 TEL.  I intend to do this in Iraqi paint and eventually set it in a dio later down the line.

Well, the third weekend is here.  I must say I apreciate all the kind comments on my failed attempt last weekend but I don't know if it will get finished.  The Tornado has already been in a few wars and has logged a few hours flying around the backyard.  Getting it back from my 9 year old nephew may prove more difficult than the kit was.  Time will tell.

I have to say that the work completed so far in this group build is very nice.  Quite a diverse array of subjects as well.  As I was rummaging in the stash to choose this weekends build, my nephew raised his opinion that I should build something "without wings".  He then chose the kit for me........ a 1/35 Leopold.  I had to explain that this was not gonna happen in 48 hours, so be begrudgingly chose again........

So, at 9:00 PM I will start something completely out of my comfort zone.  A Trumpeter 1/35 SA-6.  I will post some pics. closer to the time, but for now I need to do a little research before I start, and I may need some of that burbon that I saw earlier to calm down enough to build my first set of single link tracks.

Here we go again!

Thanks MM,

I went ahead and finished it. The wife is prepping for T-giving diner so I was up anyway.

Here is. Sorry to finish it before you blinked. It was a great little kit and would recommend it to anyone who wants a rail gun but doesn't have the room. Really nice detail and some PE which I did not install. The men and ammo are made from the rubbery plastic, but worked out OK.

25 hours in and I'm at the weathering stage. I applied a black oil wash and will let that dry before I apply some pastels.

Oh no! not the egg plane! Crying I wanted to see that too.

For some reason Imageshack isn't uploading pictures correctly, so here is what I wanted to put up last night.

I got some painting done this morning (no pictures yet) and working on the little guys.

Well...  my venture into my first group build ended with two quarts of motor oil on my garage floor and a smashed Hasegawa Egg Plane!  I didnt make the first deadline because I spilt 2 quqrts of motor oil while changing the oil in my wifes vehicle.  As I was cleaning it up, the oil filter got knocked over and proceeded to roll out from under the car leaving a 10' trail of oil with it by the time I ran around the car and stopped it rolling.  BTW... Not a good time to find out Im out of kitty litter.  After it was all said and done, I lost 4 hours and couldn't make my schedule.  Second attempt to finish last weekend resulted in my mishandling the aircraft while smoothing the first coat of paint with my microfiber towel.  I dropped it, stood up then backed up into my chair, lost my balance and the final crescendo... the loud splintering crack of the plane as I stepped on it! Bang Head Man, this one just wasnt meant to be. Congrats on those that finished!  They look great!

lostagain

Hi Lewbud,

I have decided on a Hasegawa Mig 29 'Sniper' 1/72.

Likely start date is 15th December, during the week. All the weekends are booked out already...

No prob lostagain. I pulled out my ICM 1/72 Mig-29 as a size comparison for the Sukhoi T-50, the T-50 is a big aircraft.  Once again, Tamiya's spray cans have fooled me.  When I sprayed the top of the T-50, it went on so light that I thought I had the wrong color.  Over the last couple of days, it has darkened up to what medium Gray  should be. I should have the T-50 done this weekend, depending on what the family wants to do.  Maybe get the Cougar finished as well.  Might have to ask Santa to stop by Ikea on the way to my house this Christmas for a Billy bookcase with glass doors.  Buddy's used airplane lot on top of my TV stand is running out of space.

Lewbud,
I started the K5 tonight and after 2 1/2 hours I completed the building. I will start the painting a little tomorrow morning and evening.

That's intresting, I can't see the pictures on the forums but I can see them on my email.

Greentracker,

The tentative end for this build was the first weekend of December.  However, with the big US Thanksgiving holiday this week, it will be the second weekend of December (the 11th-13th).  This will hopefully give those that can't build this weekend time to contemplate their stash and join those of us who have finished in modelling Valhalla.

How many times can we do this Lew?

As many times as you want, until the build is over.

Thanks Lew, When will it be over? It will be a couple of weeks but I'll get something. Maybe another egg plane, but we'll see what catches my eye.I'll let you know.

9:00 came and went, and the Sukhoi still sits on my paint stand. Congratulations to those who finished Round 2. For those who can, Round 3 begins this week.

Thanks for the positive comments. The Sabre looks better in the photos. The flaws I see are in the details. But I'm still learning and this was a great learning experience. I couldn't have done what I did this weekend three month ago.

I like the Valleho Metal. I think it would have served me better with more time to let the primer and the paint cure. It seemed a bit delicate in my rush to finish. I also need to airbrush "cleaner." I had a lot of dudt and fine dirt in the garage that got stuck to a wing, necessitating some sanding and touch-up. Maybe someday I'll try Alclad and I can truly compare.

Tony-great job on the Spit

Cat Daddy-nice job on the Sabre-what is your final opinion on the Vallejo Metal?

Both of you have planes that look like they took a lot longer than a weekend to build

Caveman-Although you weren't able to finish, you're off to a great start-hope you'll post pics of the finished buid-

Lew-looking forward to seeing your build-I'm not familiar with that kit.

Bob

Your F-86 looks fine to me Cat Daddy, nice work. This GB is a different kind of modelling challenge, it's good just to get it done. Lewbud, thanks for the compliment. I think the photo with two Spitfires would be a good choice for page one, as they were both attempted for this GB. Cheers Tony

2:20 PM PST and I'm calling this one done. I made a bonehead error last night which became compounded because I used what I did as a marker for one of the decals, which threw everything off. As a result, I didn't use all the decals, however, these new tool Airfix kits seem to have a zillion decals to put onto an itty-bitty airplane. It gets quite crowded in the long run. By late morning, the whole build became an exercise in frustration and as a result, things got very sloppy. Slow and steady from now on. (Or until the 2016 48-hour build.)

Notable for this build: I didn't break off any guns, pitots, or other fiddly pieces. My skills are improving.

Enough chatter, here's the photos:

36 hours in and there is finally paint on the T-50. Unfortunately, my can of air emptied and I've got to wait for the hobby shop to open up. For those that like to build their aircraft in flight, the landing gear doors are designed to be displayed open or closed, and fit decently in the closed position. Since I can't paint, I'll go do some laundry. Will try to get to the library later and post pics.

That's a fine looking Spit Tony! What decals did you use, and which pic would you like for the front page?

Here is my Spitfire, finished at the 47 hour mark, one hour ago. I've photographed it with the Swedish version of the same kit that I built last week, and the unfinished one that I started last week too. I hope you like it.

Cheers

Nice work Cat Daddy, it's coming along.

I hear you Caveman, thatthing just wasn't going to get done in a weekend. brave attempt though.

I feel much more in control with my Spitfire. I've got a little over two hours to go, but have to cook and serve dinner for the family too, as my wife has a bug at the moment.

Think I can still do it.

Progress so far...

Preshaded it last evening.

Sprayed the underside with light blue at midnight. I mixed a couple of Tamiya colours to approximate the Federal Standard colour that the Xtradecals recommend, using a ratio  Ifound on the net, looks ok. Then set the alarm for 6.30 to spray the upper side green this morning, using Tamiya XF-13, which is the recommended FS colour for it.

Then off to a swap meet for the morning, home this afternoon, lunch, a quick clear coat and decals.

These are for a Turkish PR. Mk 19, circa 1950. Quite striking I think. I like the preshading too, and haven't had to mix enamels an acrylics which I needed to d olast weekend, so a lot less problems. All the other bits, prop, spinner, wheels and exhaust are ready to glue on. I just need to do that, flat coat, remove the canopy and camera masking and a few paint chips and I've made it.

Cheers

Tony

Primered...

... aaaand ... painted!

I painted a second light coat about two hours ago (because the first coat had some boo boos), watched a movie ("Point Break" with Lee Marvin), and just now sprayed it with Future so I can decal it tomorrow, get the landing gear and other delicate parts on, and then call it a day. Once a year is enough for a 48-hour build I think.

I used Vallejo's new Metal Color along with their gloss black primer. I've never used bare metal foil or Alclad, but I really like the Vallejo product. Both went on well straight from the bottle. I usually airbrush at about 18 psi, but for the Metal Color I actually went down to about 15 psi. Vallejo suggests letting the primer cure for 12 hours before beginning the masking process. I agree with that. I let it dry for about 5 hours and felt it could use more time. If I wasn't doing the 48-hour build, I would have let it sit overnight. The label for the Metal Color says it drys in 5 minutes, but I'd let it cure overnight also if I had the time. After two hours, it was dry to the touch, but didn't feel completely dry/cured the way Tamiya acrylics feel after several hours. It was easier to use and clean than Tamiya, nonetheless and Tamiya is pretty easy to use to clean.

Sorry to hear that Caveman, but I like the attitude. Post pics when it's done, I love Tiger Meet aircraft. Bufflehead, love the classics. I think it's a later boxing but part of me wonders if there is a Shep Paine diorama guide in there. Twenty four hours to go, and I have something that looks like an airplane. Getting ready to mask the canopy, and shoot some paint.

I'm still here lewbud, just been busy working.  I'm planning on starting my kit on Friday, 11/27....don't know if that's round 2 or 3.  After digging through the stash I found this and thought it would be perfect for the GB.  Only 60 parts or so, no indy link tracks to assemble, basic O.D., and simple assembly. Plus I don't have one of these on my model shelf yet!
