I agree with Jack, weather the Torii a little more. I'm sure the Priests kept them extremely clean, but, I believe this is a time of war, and maybe they didn't get cleaned as often as they were supposed to.

Moff I wish I could tell you there was a story that I'd planned there other than that of how things just fell together. The torii gate and geisha are a few things I think of when I think Japan and I couldn't figure anyway to work Godzilla, samurai, or Pokemon in there...

I'd thought about having a Shinto priest standing beside the senior officer blessing the tank. But no one makes a figure. I thought about modifing one, and I might still yet do so, shouldn't be an issue just to drop him in there. Other than that the gate in simply scenery, I thought that being big and red it's pretty eyecatching. And not too hard to build. All I know about them is what I've read on the internet.

And that's awesome Bruce, looking forward to seeing how you use yours. I looked at a few for sale, including aquarium scenery and figured hey, it's pretty simple I'll just build one! I didn't say anything about it till the photos since if I mucked the thing up I could drop it without anyone being the wiser!

And Bish, yeah they often seem to be near or in water, I didn't see anything about why. Guess I should read up more on the subject.

Steve, I tried the water stuff before and made a bit of mess out of it. I will be trying it again but no idea when or where.

I'm going to try for a trip to the local craft store this evening to pick up the black paint for the bottom and top of the gate. This weekend I hope to sand down a few of the rough spots and then putty the gaps. A good coat of primer and I'm going to go with Jack's suggestion of a little pre-shading to add a little interest (I did it to the tank and car, no idea why I didn't think to do it to the gate). Then a little dust and grime around the bottom.

And the geisha was supposed to be beside the staff car. I thought it would be cute to have the officers talking about tactics etc while the enlisted guys were talking up the pretty lady. But as I said she's 1/32nd scale so she comes out to about 6'6" or 2 meters tall! So it was either drop her or move her away from the 1/35th figures. The area over on the side looked empty so I moved her to just walking down the street. Guess she should be connected some way but she's just there now for local 'colour'.

Excellent work going on here guys. Been away from the group after finishing my T-34/85, think I jump back in. Started work on my Eduard 1/48 Bf 110 G-4 bird three days ago, and have completed the cockpit assembly. Only a few parts to go on the 20mm cannon assembly. So far there has been no fit problems, just glue and go. After those pictures were taken I brushed on a first coat of model master enamel RLM 66. For this model I plan to have the forward cannon assembly open along with the canopy’s, I'm used to closing up everything. The radar antennas should be fun to assembly.

Heya Dan. I started on one of those Eduard Bf110's back in 2010 and still have the built front flooring with IP completed. It looked like a lot of "fun". lol.

Great start on the building so far and am looking forward to painted up pics.

Part fits on this kit so far have been excellent, very little flash here and there. Glued up the wings yesterday, don't know if it's just me but when you dry fit the wings together they look great, but as soon as you apply glue there's little gaps that pop up. But no big deal those can be filled in. Also finished assembling the 20mm cannon section. I use the Tamiya mini bottle to show scale and size. Would anybody have a Model Master or Tamiya conversion for Mr. Color C81 Russet? Looks like that color is used on the engine nacelles.

This is the book I was referring to. Not much of a read, but it has 10 aircraft profiles with two-view, three-view and four-view drawings and includes a Cartograf sheet for the unique markings for each airframe in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32.

Dan: Looking around I found a colour reference chart and looks like the russet brown is sorta an 'off' looking red (guess it's a brownish red, though it doesn't really look it from the chart). They don't list another brand though it looks sorta to me like a lighter version of hull red.

Judging by what C81 is pointing to, the exhaust assembly, likely candidate is a burnt iron colour?  Don't know if Tamiya has an equivalent.

Cliff: YES! I love your diorama. It is so very nicely done and I really like the creativity and thought you have put into it. As it is, it certainly catches my eye and draws me in. You have done a marvelous job and I appreciate you sharing your excellent skills and talent with us.

Dan: Really sharp start to your 110. I'm also one who is quite excited to see you build this. I have the Eduard 1/48 bf 110C MTO markings special edition as well as their 1/72 bf110 G-2. And all I know is that when I opened both kits and examined them i was taken aback at how crisp and detailed they looked. I'm looking forward to your progress and work that's for sure.

Well, I feel as though I actually have some real progress to share with you all. The cockpit is pretty much complete. I just need to paint the gunsight to hopefullly be added on later. One issue I oddly encountered was with the PE instrument panel. The top edge sat a bit high on the kit panel and thus the fuselage halves would not close up. I had trim and file this down to get a solid fit. Hence, you will notice the top instruments have the top edges missing. This is all good as it will be hidden under the hood when installed and pretty much unnoticeable. After the aqua gloss coat I applied a wash of Mig Abteilung weathering oils thinned with turpenoid. I made a blend of their brown and black. I then shot it with Mr. Clear Coat flat. This was followed by some dry brushing with gray on the black panels and lightened interior green on the chromate areas. I then hit high wear areas with a silver pencil and follwed that by applying some Mig brown/black blend pigment to dirty it up a bit. I then finshed it by spraying the entire cockpit with Tamiya buff highly thinned with isoprpyl alcohol to tone it down and blend it all together along with giving it a slightly dusty effect. Thanks for looking gents.

Nice job on the pit there Joe. And a nice idea for mounting the pit for painting, i had not thought of that.

I have had the same issue on some kits with the IP. Was never sure if i had not fit it right or it was a touch to big. Even thinning the fuselage plastic does not always do the trick.

Joe: Thanks and some really nice work on the cockpit there. Almost a shame to have it buried down in there where it's hard to see. Crazy about the IP not fitting though. 

Dan: Ah, big thanks Jack, I was thinking he meant the fronts of the nacelles were painted russet brown. A rusty brown does seem right for the manifolds there.

Thanks Joe Rix: Yeah the parts are pretty clean and sharp, only a little bit of flash here and there. Your cockpit it looking great, nice detail painting.

Applyed three coats of RLM 66 on the cockpit areas, unlike some of the other model master enamels that are thick, there RLM 66 is quick thin straight out of the bottle. Glue up one of the antennas, used CA glue for a faster set up time. As you can see there is a gap were the engine section meets the wing on the top, and on the bottom in the rear. I sanded down both leading edges, starting with 400 grit and finishing with 2000. I'll have to cut some styrene to fill that bottom gap. There's a very thin gap were the wing meets the fuselage.

Thats some nasty gaps there Dan. What with the X's on the wings, you haven't got some treasure hidden in there have you.

Bish - that's the first time I had encountered that issue. Certainly had me scratching my head wondering what I had done wrong. That particular stand set up I have there was actually just to pose it for the pic. For painting I commonly stick a part on the poster tack on the end of a toothpick and hold that in my hand. i just seem to have better control that way.

Bruce - Comparing my work in 1/72 to what you might see in 1/48 is indeed high praise. I'm glad it comes across that way.

Cliff - Thanks. the whole IP won't be hidden that bad. Just the top where I had to do some surgery will be almost unnoticeable.

Dan - Thank You. Wow, those are some rather gnarly gaps. I would not have anticipated that. I'm sure when your done you'll never even know they were present. Excellent progress though.

I like the idea of useing that for taking pics. I have real problems getting good pics of 72nd pits, that might help a lot. I usually paint my parts while attached to wooden pegs.

Dan: Yeah, wow those are some big gaps there. Guess there's a bunch of ways to fix them, from putty to filling in the holes with plastic plugs. 

Bish, I found kit for my second entry. Got this for free, because it didn´t have box. Normally I don´t build 1:48 models, but let´s give a try.

Joe: Man you did a bang up job on that pit brother. Wow!! Great usage of all the colors and the highlights with that silver pencil. Nailed it man! Nailed it.

Dan: In the following picture I noticed something.

It looks like the leading edge of the wing is set back a tad. Looks as though something is keeping the whole assy from sliding up to match not only the leading edge of the wing root but also creating your gap. It seems that if you can get the whole thing to move forward about .040" most of your problem should be solved. I may be all wrong but it looks like this can be cleaned up with repositioning.

Trabi: That kit looks awesome! Great start on the cockpit!

Everybody: Progress has been slow on my Arado 234. I'm just at that point with my current build ('54 Chevy Sedan Delivery) to where I'm almost finished and have alot of little do-dats and what nots. You know....the stuff that takes up alot of time. I'm making a party wagon out of it with a couch and TV in the back and so far it looks like everything is fitting.
