DantheMan85

Excellent work everyone, a few days ago started my Panzer IV. Will surly not be breaking any personal records with this Dragon Kit, the first step along has 131 parts.

Good grief!  That's a kit in itself.

I built the late version a year or two back. Be aware of the wing roots. I had an issue once I mated the fuse to the wings. It probably was something I did, but it gave me fits.
Just sayin.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Well as promised, something Soviet from '41. A Trumpeter Mig-3 (Early)

I bypassed the cockpit for a bit as I still had "coffee hands" and tiny detail work would have been a chore, and started with the wings. It's a simple 3 piece affair with a solid bottom, 2 top halfs. The two intakes were molded as separate parts, I assume they are different on the Late version. The fit seemed awfully sketchy, with no locating pins and very little actual surface are to glue on.

I hollowed them out and gave it a go. Surprisingly, fit to the wing was very good.

Fit to the fuselage was not perfect, but very acceptable

Ships usually have a ton of parts--a lot of them very, very tiny. It'll be fascinating to watch it come together.

Here we go. I'm not actually going to start until I get an upgrade kit or two in. Wood decks and some PE for sure. However, here are the box and contents.

Welcome to the GB, Hoggarth!  Glad to have you join us through 1941.

Arizona will be a great addition here--a very iconic ship for the year.

I have updated the front page roster.

Thanks for the add Checkmate! My first ship. I'm excited to get it going.

DantheMan85:  Nice pic's comparing the different color options.  The MM version definitely looks better in those pic's BUT it might wash out after the weathering.  I think the brighter Tamiya version will give you more to work with, that's my 2 cents anyway.  Did you decide already?

BTW:  I'm doing a PzII C for this GB...your post sure caught my attentionIndifferent!

Glad you found it useful, Rob.

I have a great liking for Wildcats.  This is an F4F-3 in 1/72, from Admiral, in Butch O'Hare's markings.

Some similarity of markings carried over between '41 and '42, it seems.  Did a little research and came up with this:

Might or might not be helpful, Rob.

Big thanks for that checkmate...what a great history walkthrough showing every scheme from inception to the end of the war. Even the Martlets and foreign used 'Cats too...Yes

After taking a lot of time off I am back in the swing. I love the idea of a continuous GB for each year of WWII. Thanks for doing this.

I would like to enter with the Hobby Boss 1:350 Arizona Battleship. This is not only an iconic ship but it will be my first ship build, therefore booting me completely out of any comfort zone I may have had.

I'm also looking into picking up the photo etch detail set for it. I've never worked with photo etch either so this will be a huge adventure for me.

EDIT: I went to the hobby store today and they had the Hobby Boss kit so I switched to that. Since it's bigger as well that may help me with my old eyes and shaky hands ;)

The Wildcat kit features markings depicted in '42. Getting markings for '41 would be easy enough, though.

Thanks Jgeratic & Bish on the DAK color scheme, the Panzer IV instruction’s call out for Model Master Afrika Grunbraun '41 #2099 which is to yellow for the DAK color scheme. Using my Panzer II as a paint test surface, on one side I airbrushed on Tamiya Desert Yellow XF-59, and the other side Model Master Afika Dunkelgruau '42 #2103 The Model Master shade gives a worn out, faded look, while the Tamiya color gives a newer look.

RobS:  I added your Heinkel to the GB roster "back" in 39/40.  Thanks for joining up!

You could do the Wildcat for 1941, depending on the paint scheme and markings you're thinking about.

I'm also in the carrier GB, working on cleaning up the Tamiya parts for Yorktown--which are loaded with ejector pin marks, mold seams and apparently too many guntubs.  The last carrier I built took almost six months to finish.  I was hoping for something shorter this time--don't know that it'll work that way.

Terry, glad to have you with us.  I've added you to the build roster.

Good catch, Jack.  I haven't build any German armor in decades, and that fact escaped me.

Dan, interesting colour tests, and certainly several options for schemes on the early DAK vehicles in Africa before official tropical colours were adopted.

Just an fyi for anyone interested, being a '41 GB, dark yellow paint was introduced in February of 1943. Whistling

regards,

Jack

A very good point.

Dan, if you are going to use Tamiya paints, you might want to consider XF-59 rather than 60, i can't think of any other Tamiya colour that would suit a DAK scheme out of the bottle.

Think I'm going with the light dark yellow over germen grey scheme.  Also have many shades of grey for the StuG III.

Checkmate...I got the new, gorgeous 1/72 HE111 P2 from Airfix for Xmas and she's decked out for a 1940 scheme...so, reading through the first page, I see you've re-opened the 39/40 build, so, please allow me to get in on this with this pretty Luftwaffe bird....got a big build going with an aircraft carrier atm, so, I won't get to the 111 for a bit.

I also got the new 1/72 Airfix Wildcat and Beaufighter. They are mid/late war, so, I'll keep my eyes open where to slot those in.

Bish

The new Airfix Stuka arrived yesterday and it looks a really nice kit with some very nice detail. And ye, they were still being used into 41.

That's good to hear, Bish.  I don't know if they've arrived on this side of the pond yet. Neither Squadron nor Sprue Brothers has them.  I still have two of their old-molds, and some after-market decals.
