Floats and Boats: Amphibious Aircraft Group Build

I think stretchy thread has spoiled me, and would not dare use PE for the rigging wires, but looks you did a fine job there.

Well Gents, I can finally say I am done with this one. This is the 1/48 Hasagawa F1M "Pete" recon bi-plane. It was a really fun kit and very detailed. The kit is challenging so it's not for beginners, but anyone who has a few kits under their belt would enjoy it. The rigging is part of a seperate PE set offered by Hasagawa and does not come with the kit but is meant soley for this kit. It really adds a great level of detail to the build, but at a cost of increased difficulty, as this is not an easy PE kit to work with.

I opted to not weather this one up and leave it fairly clean as all the photos I could find of this kind of plane showed them in pretty decent condition. Some of the photos were pretty poor so there may have and most likely were some in rough shape, I just didn't see any. Also with the complexity of assembly this kit requires to paint and whatnot, I didn't want to make it more work by weathering it up. So, it's mostly clean.

Well done PJ. That is such a cool looking plane. 

The Seiran is completed. The dolly wood graining was done in acrylic basecoat and oils. I'm pleased how the hairspray weathering came out on this unusual late war scheme.

As usual, there are tons of talent in these GBs as seen in the completed entries. Well done gentlemen.

I would never of guessed it was an older tooled kit, and sheer size combined with the paint work must be something to behold in person.

Superb, Rob!  And one of the fastest builds I have ever seen on a forum!  Congratulations!

I'm done. The Mavis was quite literally too big for me to photograph, so, my final pics are not the greatest. This was a great build and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought her a turkey upon initial view of the kit, but, after the fact, it was great. The fit was remarkable for an older Hasegawa mold. The biggest issue I had was the seam on the top of the fuselage, but, I dealt with that pretty well. Having a zillion rivets was an issue when sanding, but, I managed to salvage them for the most part. The clear parts were not great. VERY thick and the windows/portholes fit just OK, but, not terribly noticeable. So, all in all, I liked it. I'm happy with the results and it's going to be a 'huge' (literally) addition to my 1/72 collection. I'd love to take a badge and big shout out to those who've finished, are on route to finishing and above all our host!

Ha, yeah, seems fast for sure in terms of days, but, the hours I've poured into this guy was quite a bit. I have the fortune of not having much to do other than build...lol!

I can't beleive how fast Rob's build went.  Whew!

Rob, you're not even done and I am BLOWN AWAY by this build. Awesome.

Almost done. Engines mounted, wing mounted, floats on, struts on and painted, wiring started:

I popped off the engine cowlings to install the engines, hence, the numbers on each engine. Had to drill out a hole to install 8 x exhaust pipes. That was a bit of a challenge as each pipe was about 1.5mm long!

Each prop, hand painted Vallejo aluminum with hand painted red stripes.

I'm using stretchy nylon cording for the float lines and stretched sprue for the inner strut wiring. Gonna wrap this project up by tomorrow night, me thinks!

Rob S,  your hinomaru on the wings ( I could be jumping the gun here and you still plan to work on them), but viewing them with a technical eye, am wondering why none of the outer edges are weathered like you have happening in the centers?  Other than that, looking fantastic!
