Group Builders working on Hind A's. An astute observation by a fellow Hind modeler named Azie has clued me to something I have never noticed EVER in over 10 years of admiration for the MI-24 Hind A (I've never had the chance to see the Hind A in the flesh; but seen and done maintenance on the Hind D and F plenty of times :( . . . oh freakin well).
Anyway, there is a very small window on the port side, almost directly above the pilot. It is clearly evident on any pic of the Hind B (non-production aircraft), but is impossible to see on almost every photograph published in print or on the web, unless you've actually sat in the Hind A at Monino or elsewhere (as Azie has).
So, add it to your list of things to fix on the Airfix, Hasegawa, etc. Hind A kits. I'll be getting out the dremel and installing one on my 1:35 scratch-build. Not trying to make a mountain out of a mole-hill, but it's one of those things that makes all the effort another 100% accurate.
By the way, Azzie is building a 1/24 scratch-build of a Hind A and a MIG-25 Foxbat out of wood. I'll link his website after I clear it with him first. I'm really looking forward to a seeing and watching this 1/24 scale Hind roll out! Hoot!

Also, here's my link to some real QS-55 Hind Army VISMOD pics somebody asked for. These were eventually all destroyed in Stinger missile testings over White Sands Missile range after they made them remotely piloted, of course!)

That's a great conversion you've started there. Great pics. Personally, having seen the pics, I would have thought that the work necessary 'down the back' would have been quite straightforward, but you say that you are closing the doors.
For those tackling the 24-V, the Trumpeter kit needs the following added in the troop area in the back - 1. prominent hinges/springs where the seat base meets the back (so that they can be folded up when not in use), and the seatbelts for the seats 2. ''ball' type air vents in the trunking along each side of the roof 3. gun clamps under the windows and the opening levers for the windows 4. scribe the floor panels and add 'rivet' lines in them 5. add the prominent plumbing for the de-frost system beside the 'L' shaped container on the rearmost cabin wall 6. saw off and build up the electrical box on the other side of the rearmost cabin wall and add the wiring 7. add the prominent bulkheads to both sides of the rear cabin and add all the little electrical boxes and wiring associated with them 8. replace one of the door actuating bars/hinges with cable (only one side of the troop doors has those big hinges/bars).
It sounds a lot, but once you get started, it should only take a few hours of scratchbuilding.

T3488g's hind is nearing completion!!! after a coat of paint it will be rolled out of the factory. still haven't gotten those pilots or troops, so the cockpit will not be attached for a while.

Ok, for some reason I thought the finish date was June 1st, so I got stuck into my 1/72 Hind A.

And now, 1 week later I'm finished.

Nothing flash, but the quickest build I've ever done.
Pity about the port side window, would have been nice to include it to be alot more accurate,bad OOB.





Now I'm done, might actually have time to make another.

Can someone steer me in the direction of some decent referance pics??

Thanks for the comments. I missed one from the rear cabin checklist. In the 24-V there are two very prominent yellow fuel pipes running from the floor to the roof. One is located in the rear corner beside the anti-freeze container and piping and the other is at the front, running from the floor up the left side of the opening of the passageway. This latter one stops short of the cabin roof, bends 'forwards' and then goes up into the roof space just inside the passageway.
If you do choose to open the troop doors, you will also have to put some kind of detail in the spaces at each side of the passageway, because if you look in the model's open doors, you can see the spaces!! (Darn it!) The right side is filled with racks of electrical equipment (with wire pull-out handles on each). The other side has wiring, a triangular-shaped panel and various bits and pieces in it.
As I type this, maybe you were right to leave the doors shut.......
Unfortunately I do not have a digital camera, but I will try to persuade a friend who does to take some shots. Hope this helps.

The more I read your posts the more I want to re-open my Hind,Colin Russell. Sounds interesting to make all of this scratch building ... but no I said I'm gonna make this OOB!

No new pics since it's taking a lot of time sanding and puttying the helicopter after I've glued the two halves together. I hope to have her ready for painting this weekend.

If you're going to hit the Hind A again, I got links to most pics you need and have already linked most all available cockpit shots in earlier posts. Can link you to Azie's one-stop-shop for most external Hind A pics (he's building a 1/24 Hind A scratch-build; no pics, yet).

Colin, again, I salute you for your mad schemes for the troop cabin. Only thing I think I could add would be the black rubber tubing that is installed all the way around each section of the troop cabin doors. They inflate and form a seal when the doors are closed in order to pressurize the cabin from bio/chem agents. I'm sure strip styrene .040" rod should do the trick in about 10 minutes.
I don't really have alot of Hind A cabin pics, so I'm tottering over the cabin detail option.

Hi everyone, I have been sitting here silently reading posts for a while now but thought I would jump in here with a couple of observations from one who has been lucky enough to have been inside both the A and D models on the same day... Obviously there are enormous differences in the cockpit areas of the two models, but the good news is that the troop cabins are virtually indentical, the only difference I recall is the fitting of metal (possibly some form of armour) plates below the windows on the inside of the cabin sides these had cutouts to allow the stowage of the rifle braces I will try to find some pics and post them.
otherwise structural details are the same between A and D variants.
BTW some very nice work being done here.

Wish I knew why I thought cut off was 1st June. Would've done a better job, more attention to detail.
Oh well.

As soon as there is a solid finish date, I'll be able to work out whether I have the time to build another, hopefully an A, but possibly something later.
Now to get back to the 5 others I have cramping my workbench at the moment.

Thanks for the heads-up on the door seals - I missed those in my references. The 24-V I am doing also has some alterations to be made to the steps (ie the lower portion of the cabin doors). The more you look at references, the more changes you find from one aircraft to another. It's a question of finding as much as you can on the particular machine you want to build and then going for it!
As for the cockpit on the 24-V, there is so much work to be done simply because with those big windows, you can see all of it! There are times when it is tempting to cover the whole of the glazing in a tarpaulin!!!
Still, this Trumpeter model does justify all the work. And then, there will have to be a couple of modified figures to go on the diorama base......

i finished painting (i think........) and patched the cracks with wite wout, painted again, reglued the rotor, so when the glue dries it should be done and i will post some pics.

the glue dried, so here is the pic of the hind ready to leave the factory (canopy not installed)



so i moved it onto my train set to take some pics of it on "grass" went to put the canopy on, poor fit so as i was trying to get it on for a pic one of the parst fell off the bottomAngry [:(!]Angry [:(!] i hate this model, wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I had alot of trouble applying the PE parts to mine, so don't be discouraged, it's just one of those things.

The hardest part, the missile racks on the outer wings.

Folding all the little PE parts sent me round the twist, cause every time I tried to CA bits onto each other, I would end up bending other parts.

Nearly had me in tears.
Thankfully my hair is already going grey, so my stress level never shows!!!!!

It's the Hasegawa kit that has the soldiers and pilots. That's the kit I'm building. here are my progress pics so far.

This first pic shows my canopy painted. I need to go over it a bit more, but i should have it installed in a day or so:



These are two views of each side of my Hind A. All the grey pieces you see are the little detail parts I decided to put on.





Sorry about the poor quality of the pics here.

Now, I have to assemble the rotors, add the cabin doors, and mount the canopy after I add the small window above the pilot's seat. I've already started the armament for the wings, it is about half done now. I think in a few weeks I'll be ready to deliver this Hind to my Libyan Forces, but then I'm building this one slow to keep up with the rest of the Group Builders.

Concrete, tarmac, dirt.

I was thinking concrete, but would a Hind A look outta place on a concrete dio?

No, a Hind wouldn't look out of place on concrete. Most Soviet helicopter bases had concrete runways for the Hind, sincve it needed a rolling takeoff when fully loaded. Also, they tended to send them to Airbases when sending them outside of the country before they were deployed.

Tarnac is fine too, for the same reasons. Dirt would be good if simulating a Hiind dropping troops behind enemy lines.

Anyway, here is the progress I have made so far with all the other builds I'm doing. I got the doors on the cabin, painted all the details, and installed the canopy. I also drilled out the small window above the pilot's seat that was shown in a previous photo. I filled it in with Testor's window cement, which was still wet when these pics were taken.

The yellow-orange in the canopy is a reflection from my light that I used during picture taking.

Now all I have to do is clearcoat and decal it, then install the rotors and weapons.

Duke,

I am sure you own the ONLY 1/72 Hind A with the little observation window above the pilot. I am so proud of you, as I am sure others are, that a tear drop fell down my cheek and landed in a paint mix I was working on. I shall use that tear-mixed-paint on my Hind A, as a salute to your dedication. So, with that, don't forget to mask a straight line support frame on that last large piece of overhead glass. It continues from the one that is already running from the nose and up the middle of the canopy. Damn Hasegawa, the mold maker was asleep at the mold mix, AGAIN. Not sure if the Airfix kit did it right.
Looking good!
And just wondering if you did it all OOB with the exception of the small overhead window?
