Savoia-Marchetti S.78
Choroszy Modelbud 1/72 Scale Resin
The Savoia-Marchetti S.78 (a.k.a. SM.78) was last in a line of wooden hull pusher-engine biplanes built by this famous seaplane constructor commencing with the S.59 (a.k.a. SM.59) first flown in 1925. Based on the SM.62 (a.k.a. S.62) first flown in 1926, the S.78 weighed a ton more, the upgraded “W” 18-cylander 930 h.p. Isotta Fraschini Asso 750 engine offering 20% more power along with double the operational range.
Already obsolescent by the time it first flew in 1932 only 49 S.78s were built some seeing brief operational service with the Regia Aeronautica Italia’s 144a Squadriglie maritime reconnaissance unit before being replaced by parasol wing monoplane CANT Z.501 seaplanes during the latter 1930s.
