I leave the fourum for one night (a time zone thing) and you guys pump out these amazing updates!

DB - Great progress, cant wait to see it done.

Fred - Your Hurricane is coming along a treat.

PJ - Excellent idea for a simple and effective jig, your spit is coming along brilliantly.

Brandon - What a subject, I watch with great anticipation your the rigging process. A great subject and build as well, brilliant work.

Bish - I had a go with a few outdoor pictures for you to post, but I'm unhappy with them all. Im away dealing with family issues for the next couple of days. On my return I will have another go at getting a shot that I'm happy with for you to post.

Keep up the great work everyone.

Thanks Fred, I'll be starting my Hurricane as soon as I finish the Tornado, or is it a Hurricane starts Tornados Hmm Anyway, once I'm done with one weather phenomena I’ll start the other. Your is coming right along.
BD, I like the tape idea and I think it turned out great. Fabric taping really doesn’t show much on real planes. It’s just enough to hint at the taping.
The Tonka is almost finished. The decals are on and ready for another coat of a gloss coat and some washes. After, I just need to add the gear and pitot tube.

Hi Check, I did a little more digging about interior colours.  Yep, more 'muddy waters' as here is an example of a Blenheim with open flaps - looks to have camouflage colours on both of the interior surfaces:

What I do know for certain is by mid war Britain did have a shoratge of aluminum (powder) for their paints.  Discussion can be found of this affecting their tank production, having them switch from silver to white interiors, but I've yet to find anything concerning the aircraft industry.

It could be aircraft factories had first dibs on the aluminum paint, and any touchups done at maintenance units had to resort to other paint sources?

regards,

Jack

PJ: Now that's coming along great!

Fred: Good to see her together and all primed up!

BD: Love how you're simulating the look of the skeleton with the tape pre-shading.

Steve: Wow, almost there now. Hope that giant decal on the tail-fin didn't give any problems.

Damion, Bish and Gamera thank you so much.

Gamera, actually they went on like a dream. I pre-cut the areas where the vortex generators are and the decal laid down very nicely. The “100th” and “1915 – 2015” wording were separate decals on the upper tail as well as the “31 Sdn 100th Anniversary” on the spine were separate decals so that helped a lot.

Hello there great work going on here, I've been away for awhile but have jumped back into my Avro Lancaster. Have the bomb bay floor attached to the side supports, and the pilot's seat painted up. Looking ahead the color's I'll be using for the main camouflage are, Model Master Dark Earth #2054, Tamiya RAF Dark Green XF-81 & Tamiya XF-1 Flat Back. I'm not looking forward to masking those windows.

Steve: Great to hear. It's always been funny to me. Sometimes the huge ones go down without any issues at all and sometimes mine want to stick and tear.

Dan: Wow, that looks awesome! I've got the 1/72nd Hasegawa Lanc but haven't had the guts to tackle her yet. Looking forward to seeing how yours goes.

mc:  excellent!  (as usual!)

Jack:  thanks for posting the photo; that gives some options to consider; it does look like the interior wing components on the left side might be in interior green?

Dan:  you're off to a very good start, there

Got my new airhose yesterday, so I put a matte coat on the front half and wings of the Hampden this afternoon, and can resume building

Thanks Steve! Love the work on that Tonka. Perfect scheme for this build, too.

Dan - nice start on that Lancaster.

Bish - the paint I used is Mr. Paint PC10 (Late) for the green and Mr. Paint Clear Doped Linen (can't remember if it's type 1 or type 2) for the underside.

Well, went home at lunch today to put the top roundels on. Aaaaaand... left one in the water too long Bang Head.

Email is off to Eduard inquiring about a replacement set.

In the meantime, I suppose I can get to work on the ordnance, propeller and undercarriage.

Ugh.

BD: Ouch, that sucks. Good luck with getting it fixed.

BTW: Finally got the Tempest primed. I found a number of issues and reputtied and sanded her out and hopefully get the next coat of primer on this weekend. Sorry for the bad quality of the photos, somehow the protective glass over the lens in my phone was broken and I had to chip it out.

Hats off to all in the GB – some fine kits are going to result.

I've finished the masking and will start painting soon. (Real world is going to interfere during July 4th week.) I've used a new technique that I think is going to work. If I were doing a tank I wouldn't bother creating masks – I'd just airbrush freehand. But as I understand it the RAF camo patterns were uniform depending upon theater and the period of war. Not usually a nut about precision, but I thought I'd try to do a proper mask particularly as this kit comes with 1:1 diagram of the aircraft with camo on it. Unfortunately the North Sea nightfighters had a different scheme, so I had to draw my own camo lines on the diagram.

For the mask itself I used a product called SureSwatch which is sold at Home Depot for $3 per 3sheets. (Tamiya makes masking paper at twice the price.) There's a picture of the stuff below. The side that has all of the text covers a plastic sheet that is adhesive on one side and coarse plastic on the other. I traced the bits of the camo pattern onto the coarse side (very easy to draw on – a smooth piece would be very hard to use a pencil or thin sharpie) and then cut them out of the plastic. There were a lot of camo sections so there were perhaps a dozen pieces. (The cut sheet shown is the remnant of the one sheet used: at least half is left) On thing nice about this procedure is that when you cut out the camo piece, the area around will act as the border of the second stage of camo painting after the first is done. It's adhesive but less so than Tamiya tape and will not remove any of the very sturdy auto lacquer primer I used. You can see what the plane looks like with the masking applied. As you can see I needed to use some tape on areas that weren't quite right. In any case, all of the unmasked black will be painted RAF Medium Sea Gray. When that's done the masking goes off and after the paint dries for a day, the reverse mask is applied and the RAF Dark Green goes on.

It's very possible that someone that's good with Tamiya tape could get good results in less time, especially if you're using that new Tamiya resin tape made for masking curves (5mm, 3mm, 2mm) which works very well.

Anyway, the next photos you see the plane should look a lot like a WWII Beaufighter. Or so I hope.

Eric

Gents: true, there are no photos to view. When I put the sharing image data from Photobucket into this post (something that's worked great for 7 years) I got a note that I had to update my account to "Enable 3rd Part Hosting". I have no clue whatsoever what I need do. (In 7 years I've used 12% of the 2GB data allowed.) I've got in touch with Photobucket and hope they can work this out. Sure hope I can do that - I'm sure Photobucket has competitors but I don't know who they are. Sorry.

Certainly does look similar to the grey green used in the cockpit interior.

Everyone, man the excellent posts from the bench continue at a steady rate.  My email inbox is getting quite the workout. Keep up the great work.  Beer

I've been seeing some people having trouble with photobucket.  I used the PB app on my phone (I don't have a computer).  Does anyone know what is going on?
