Ok, so the one thing other than rigging that has always made me stay away from WWI models is replicating the look of the laminated wood propeller by painting.

So I decided to tackle the prop on my F.2B while I await the decals to arrive from the Czech Republic.

Looking from the top, the lines in the propeller should be parrallel, and looking from the front, they do some crazy twisty-turny patterns due to the shape of the prop.

I saw a guy on Facebook who carved his own, so I decided to try that out.

I started with thin walnut veneer I picked up at a local woodworking shop. $11 got me enough sheets to make about 36 1/48 walnut props, so it's pretty cost-effective.

I bought some Truebond Original wood glue at the clerk's recommendation, and I went home and cut strips of veneer with my X-acto knife.

Wooden Prop

The above strips are actually not what I ended up with, as the lighter ones were a different wood that didn't work out. Since this is an allied prop, and they didn't see the big contrast in wood types that Central Powers props did, I used all walnut (top, middle and bottom of the above). I ended up using 6 strips in the final prop.

I glued them and clamped them in a vise, then drew a rough outline of the prop on the top with pencil.

Wooden Prop

That was easy enough, so I cut it down with a razor saw and X-acto knife to get it roughly right, but still oversized.

Wooden Prop

Next, I used flat, half-round and round files to shape it, then, when I had it where I wanted it, I used 600-grit sandpaper to smooth it out.

Wooden Prop

Wooden Prop

I ordered a set of Copper State Models photoetched prop bosses from Sprue Brothers just now, so I'll add that when they arrive. In the meantime, I'll spray this with Tamiya clear orange and clear yellow mixed to where I want it, drill the mounting hole and get back to the aircraft work so I'm ready to move forward when decals arrive.

Now thats a first for me, that is just brilliant. You can't get any more realistic than that.

I just want to take this chance to say a big thank you to everyone in this GB. When hosting one of these, i am content if 50% of the entires get completed. 3 and a half months in, we have 49 entries and Checks Hampden makes 20 completions already.

And add to the great builds all the info shared and general banter, and this is deffinetly the best GB i have had the fortune to host. I only come up with the subject, its you guys that make it work.

I am really looking forward to seeing what we have in store over the next 8+ months.

So thanks again guys, you have really made this a pleasure to run and be part of.

Bish, this has been an awesome build, even if I am having a hard time keeping up with all the amazing work. Or because of the hard time keeping up with all the amazing work.

Reminds me of the 109 group build a couple years ago. Lots of great work, and lots of fun.

Thanks for hosting!

Thanks very much for your comments about the Hampden, Bish and Scott.

I thought that Sgt. Hannah's story was particularly moving and poignant, especially given his early death and that of his wife so many years later.

Agreed, a very sad end for both him and his wife.

That one good thing about GB's, i think its a good way for newer members to get to know other members and get known themselves. Its great to see when people can slot right in as you have and before long it feels like they have been here for years.

As usual....I get busy with life, miss a few days, and all h e double hockey sticks breaks loose!

Das beave, that walrus looks great!  You did a fantastic job with that little demon!

Rooster, I love the effect with painting the roundels!  Looking good!

....and that RAF 75th commemoration build...man!  That is awesome, Doug!

A hand carved propeller?  Really, Brandon?!  The gauntlet has been thrown....I NEED to try that!

I hope I didn't miss anybody!

I haven't made any new progress on the Lanc, although I found the sprue that had the piece that I need to be able to finish!  Now I don't need to wait 12 weeks until Revell of Germany can get me the one little piece I need!  Lol....and it was in a place  that I KNOW I looked several times! Oh well!

I have been trying out the black basing technique on a little snap together a10 warthog that my son was supposed to build, but I ended up doing it....I figured it would make a great candidate because it is just going to hand from his ceiling when it's finished....

BD- You have done one heck of a fine job on that prop. Yes

Beav- Fantastic looking Walrus.

Check- Great looking Hampden and very interesting historical facts about the crews.

Doug- Marvelous looking double build!

I have a small update on my build. Got all the colors sprayed including the tail band. I just brushed a third light coat of Future and it's looking just right for decals. Now it has to cook for a couple of days then the decals and washes will go on. Double click on the image for a closeup.

Thanks guys. The Silly Putty trick is great for creating semi-soft edges if you know how to hit the correct angle as one goes. I believe they had hard edge lines but semi soft look better IMO.

Damian- Apologies for missing your beautiful Mosquito. It looks super and the ground work is equally impressive. Beer

Its funny how some subjects just seem to apprear in groups on here. Even outside this GB, where you would expect plenty of those aircraft, every where i look somone seems to be building one. Its like its taunting me Big Smile

Lol no worries Bish, I'm still working toward finishing the Tempest!

But I'll admit I was looking at some decals in my stash the other week for an Aussie un-named aircraft with the cool shark mouth. I have to wonder if a shark mouth would fit a Typhoon/Tempest- with the giant oil cooler under the nose it seems a natural. I don't think the Aussies ever bought any of these aircraft though.

Thanks Gamera. Funny you mentioned the shark mouth. I have the old Revell 1/32 cardoor Typhoon and managed to get all the required parts to make it a bubble top. I recently ordered some Aviaeology Sharkmouth Typhoon decals from 245 Squadron that are just  gorgeous.

Found two dealers with the same set in 1/48th. I'm going to order a set for myself!

When you build that 1/32nd I assume you're going to post her, I really want to see that!!!

I was going to build it for the GB but wasn't sure if my parts were going to surface. It took a while but I finally got them.

I just may build it after the Spit For this GB.
