That's a very cleverly constructed jig to align the wings, jeaton.  How did you get it disassembled to set the plane free?

Thanks John, I've got a Gladiator in my stash too. I printed out the copy of your jig to put inside the box so I'll have it when I start the kit.

Thanks, John. All of the reviews I've seen said watch out or the wings and be careful with the engine/cowling. Bookmarked your link for the jig design.

Managed to get some work done yesterday. Today was interrupted with life things so here's where I'm at this time.

Got the main landing gears attached  and some post shading/staining done on the underside. Some more grime and streaks to come.

Did some light wear on the high foot traffic areas and attached the pit hatch.

got the prop blades painted, decaled and assembled. They need some clear flat to kill the gloss. Painted the stacks Alclad burnt metal and dry brushed some Testors rust enamel.

Beav

The Roden Gladiator gets pretty good reviews. Eduard made a "special edition" which doesn't include rigging lines: they're British and almost twice as wide as thin - but PE versions are available. And most people can't tell one type of rigging from another. The kit appears to have very nicely done fabric over frame - a problem that has caused grief for many other models.

My experience with Eastern European models (even kits like this - released in 2002 - and well reviewed) is that it pays to stay alert. But it's a very neat plane. I've got a Roden Rolls Royce Armored car - 1918 edition - that is screaming build me. And what Colonel Lawrence wants he gets.

Moving along on the Beaufighter. Since last time I gave it cover with Tamiya spraycan Satin. That was to prepare for filters I put on with Com.Art acrylic paints. Com.Art has an extensive range of transparent colors and they make very nice filters. For the gray portions I used a Transparant Smoke – both plain and hit with a drop or two of ultramarine and Transparant Blue Gray Smoke. So three colors altogether. I apply Com.Art the way a lot of modelers use enamel or oil washes/filters: first dampen the area with a brush and then give the filter brush a good dunking, but then drain it. The effect is a slight change in hue (much easier to see live) but also a kind of grainy texture that emulates grime nicely. I also made two green brews with two green colors and two browns. While waiting for things to dry I also did the clear parts and they look pretty good. (They are not yet secured). Here is the upper half with two color filters and canopies.

This is a portion of the bottom – it shows the filter effect more clearly.

Before I did the pics I sprayed the plane with a combination of Vallejo satin and matte varnish with an airbrush. I want an acrylic base now because I'm going to cross my fingers and give the thing an oil paint dot filter.

If I don't throw myself and the plane off the balcony after the oils, I think it's a matter of putting on some small bits and pieces (Two hours? Two weeks?) Then I'm going to try Windsor Newton Matte Varnish which I've heard some very good things about to finish things. Or not.

PJ: Beautiful work you've got there. Really love the scuffed paint where the pilot climbs in and out of the machine, I always either over or under-do that.

Eric: Love what you've got so far. Looking forward to seeing the results of your technique.

Very appealing finish on both planes, pj and Eric.  Weathering is subtle and still conveys its presence.

PJ, Very nice, very nice indeed! I've always had a place in my heart for the Spitfire, and you've done an amazing credit to this line of incredible aircraft.

Eric, The detail and weathering looks to be spot on. Great work!

My Revell Spitfire is done! I built this OOB except for the foil belts and an added detail to the rear view mirror that was punched out from chrome plastic foil.

and glued on with Testors Clear Parts Cement. I has a very close look to an actual mirror.

Some fuel staining

Added a bit more chipping with a small piece of foam dipped in silver Floquil paint and blotted almost dry on a piece of paper towel to get tiny chips.

The belly got some light staining. Less is more.

The marbling add tonal value to the solid Med. Sea Grey

This kit was very easy, enjoyable and well detailed in my book. Parts fit was exceptional except in a couple of places in the pit area but nothing to write home about.

Thanks Bish for letting me participate in this GB. Please use the last picture for the completion page.

Markings are for No.416 Squadron, RCAF, Tangmere, England, May 1944.

Thanks Checkmate.

Thanks Damouav.

Thanks Bish.

Thanks Gamera.

Andy: Nice camouflage paint job on the Hurricane, silly putty always comes in handy.

Plasticjunkie: Great job on your Supermarine Spitfire.

Ebergerud: The Beaufighter is coming along great.

Have the Lancaster ready for primer, the windows prove to be difficult to mask with tape so I brushed on MicroScale Liquid Mask. When gluing the side windows in I got glue on the top canopy, I decided to strip the future off and start over. Did the same thing with my 1/48 Junkers Ju 52/3M a few years ago.

First up is a single coat of Model Master Grey Primer #2737, the Tamiya mini bottle is to show size of the scale.

Next up is Tamiya X-1 Glass Black for pre-shading on the top and sides. The bottom and lower sides will be XF-1 Flat Black so no need to pre-shade. On the top I did about 50/50 with pre-shading only the panels, and filling some of them in. I put two coats of XF-1 Flat Black Friday and today, I'll set it aside Sunday to let the paint cure for masking.

Love the Lancaster!

I actually painted the first coat on the bottom of my SE5.  I would include a picture, but it seems none of my albums exist on Flickr at the moment.

PJ, I agree, the foil tape is the bees knees for mirrors and light reflectors. Well done, that is one very nice SPit.
