Tony, Thank you! I try to use both hands when doing extremely close work and position subject where I can use something to steady my hand... If not it is a series of zig zag lines, I'll assure you! lol...

But, now a bit more.

OK, to start, this is grau /grun over all. I painted each panel individually with a thinner then normal paint mix, so as not to obscure the pre shading. Then gave a light blending coat over all with an even thinner coat. I have never liked the "washing " meathod to hilite panel lines and such, even though I have done it many times. I've been trying something a bit tifferent lately, and will describe it when I get to that point. 

And this is what I always forget to take pictures of. A while back when I first heard of silly putty masking I thought that it would leave oily areas and pull the paint off at best... It does neither, and its the way I do about 90% of my masking now. Hint... If you practice with it and work it with patients, you can do a heck of a spiral on a prop nose. Takes alot of practice but its worth it. Ok, I just made the splotches, and lightly sprayed more 76 in between them still maintaining the pre shading. It will be enhanced later.

And the clear is on and we'll let that set up to be able to start decals!

Coming on really well Doug.

I have started getting my drill bits on e-bay. I can get a pack of 10 all the same size for just over £2 with free postage. You can never have enough spares. I did get a set of really small ones, 0.1mm, but you only have to look at then hard and they break. But the rest work a treat.

Such neat pre-shading Doug. Mine is all over the place. Good progress.

Thats great Jack... Be prepared to break one every now and again. If they load up with plastic on the tip, pinch the plastic and gently turn by hand in reverse and more likely then not the plastic will twist its way off. But yes, they do come in very handy for our hobby. 

Ok... I started my painting this morning, and I'm going to do a flat brown pre shading and just to see how it would look I did a portion of the tail underside in the 76 already... I like it! I think this will do for the all over scheme.

OK, the underside is done... now to flip it over...

And the upper surfaces are done... I could go on but I'll have to leave it here for now. Thanks all!

Doug I picked up those bits last night and wow!! This is the best find in quite some time. I think they were less than $8 with my 20% off coupon. I already used them to drill out wiring holes on a 1/24 scale car motor and they were a dream!

I am going to mask the windows, get some primer on it and will report back. Thanks again everyone!!

 

I too think it will turn out great!  I'll be watching this one to see the end result.  So far it's looking great!

Doug, that's a nice set. They work very well but tend to break very easely.

Doug, I spent some time at another store looking for exactly thisand found that 1/16 was the smallest they could offer. I have a Harbour Frieght 1/4 of a mile from the house and will be stipping by there today on the way home for this setup! You guys are a great help!

 

That is a great set of bits!  I too will be hitting up my HF to get those!  And I apologize...like Doug mentioned, I took a sewing needle and just pushed it in the center of the air brake holes to give the bit a little something to bite.  Still say it will be awesome when you're finished!

Do you have access to a Harbor Freight, a tool store, or a decent hobby shop? If not most all have webb sales. The reason I'm asking is if you can, these drill bits are invalueable...

I think I saw where a few pages ago Eagle 90 has a set in a post. These are from Harbor Freight, and being carbide are a tad bit brittle, but will last if handled fairly gently. The nightmare with drilling like this is that (as was stated) the bit has a tendensy to "drift" and the only way I"ve found to lessen that is to take a scribe, pointed one, and poke the plastic to leave a small *** punch mark in which to start the drill tip in. The other way is to drill a small "pilot" hole , which will guide the finish size bit as you drill. Don't try to hand drill with these micro bits as they again are brittle and the smaller ones will break. use a dremmel to drill with. These come in various sizes as you see and are relitively in-expensive. Hope this is helpful... Keep up the good work!

Doug, I have not seen those before at HF....but I WILL be asking about them now!  Thos are really nice.  LOL!  I think anything that small is going to break.  LOL!  Thanks for mentioning the pilot hole too!  I forgot to.  I used a sewing needle to (like you described) start a small hole for the bit to bite.  Thanks for the pic of the bits....I will be looking for them for sure!

I'm with you on taping canopies Doug, but it does look pretty good. I'm going to take on a 1/72 SBD Dauntless canopy pretty soon, should be fun...not !

Got her struts installed...

And shes on her own two legs...Now the fun begins, The dreaded taping og the canopies! ARRRGHHH!

Spent the best part of the morning and a bit after lunch just to get this far... I despise taping canopies...

Oh man, I'm so sorry.  But it does not look bad!  Remember the scale you are working in.  VERY difficult like you said.  And trying to drill those holes that close together.  My drill set is a hand drill and that really does not help due to the fact the drill will run on you sometimes. 

I think once you paint, detail, and weather her up, it will look great.  I think mine had five holes too, but if you look at my brakes...LOL!  You can see where another row of holes could go...but I opted out of it.  Just too close.

Still a great looking build!  It will turn out awesome in the end...you'll see.  

So I bought the drill and then made an error in attempting to drill the same amount of holes as were raised on the kit and they were just too close even with the smallest bit. Had I been smart and followed Eagles lead I would have tried for 4 holes max. I am trying to recover this one and will keep you posted. Next time I will be using a sharpie to lay out where the holes will go prior to drilling!

Ok, thats about 30 quid. Bit expensive but i know there stuff is good and if it is the loader i think, no one else does it. As a one off for a dio, i think it will be worth it. Cheers jack.

Jack, thanks for that info on the bomb trolley. Always on the look out for those. be interested to see the price, Owl has the trolley on its own for around £15 which seems a lot even though it is resin. The only one out at the moment are the Acdemy and Zvezda, but that Andrea one looks like the larger type which will be handy.

Great stuff going on here guys - been lurk'n but have not signed up as I'm already behind with GB's and with nicer weather finally here it will only get that much worse.

It's from Andrea so it is pricey, available in 1/32,1/48, and 1/72 scales.

Evening all! Bit more from me...

So far this booger is going together very well. If you look towards the back of the cockpit tub where the wing attaches, where the engine cowling is attached to the wing, and just to the right of the cowling on the wing , you will see some small white areas. That is typing correction fluid (white out) and thats all the seam repair thats been required so far. I'm liking it!

Bay doors and tail wheel in place.

Tail pieces assembled , 

And I have opted to use the exhaust flame shielding, being these sometimes flew long runs and periodicaly flew at night. 

And lastly for now the landing gear going in. That will need to set up overnight. Take care all...

Thanks for getting back with me. I understand completely. After I finish the Avenger I do have an Italeri Ju 87 B-2 Stuka I was wanting to get done. Not sure of the exact start time, but I will keep you all posted when I can if that works.

Hi George, I think it might be a little more advanced that the original specks WRT amount of work done, I recom your close to about 60 % or so.

Maybe for this particular GB it will not work, do you maybe have another model you wold like to enter?

The GB runs till next year so there is more than enough time.

I was just made aware of this group build and am hoping to join. Unfortunately I am more than 25% done, but did originally start on April 3rd this year. Please let me know. If not I understand. I am building former President George Bush's TBM-1C Avenger from September 1944. It is the Accurate Miniatures 1/48 scale kit. I am attaching photos of where I am at the moment if that helps. If accepted I can show some prior progress photos and information for those that may be interested.

Eagle90 I checked my tools last night and I dont have anything that small so I am heading to the local HS as I think I know just the hand drilling tool you might be refering to. I accept the challenge and will report back with some photos once I get them drilled (or attamped to drill). Thanks for the tips!

 

It can be a bit of work doing those holes, but it will look really cool when you're done.  Have you gotten the drill yet?  I'll post a pic of my little set.  It is pretty small.  The bits are in a small plastic case and are stored in the handle.  It has very tiny bits.  You can buy the bits seperate too.  They are very fragile, so be careful....yeah, I've broke a few.
