Shelf of Doom GB II - 2018

In keeping with last year's GB, I've based the proposed GB badge on someone's real Shelf of Doom.

Hey Bish did that vehicle make it to a production model or never made it past the prototype phase? 

 

This one did make it into service, though in limited numbers. Less than 50 were built.

When I saw the title to this GB I knew it was destiny to pull this old kit off the shelf and make it something special. I would like to join the build with this 1:24 AMT 1957 Chevy Bel Air Coca Cola kit. I bought this one at a yard sale for $5 and knew it would be trouble right away as I noticed the body had been painted prior to purchase. Upon further inspection for the GB it appears it was painted with some very thick paint and was sanded and damaged in multiple areas (see photo 4). Other than that it appers untouched. I have big plans for this one and I promise not to go with the color scheme and Coke decals on th kit cover! I will check back with some progess pics and idea of colors etc soon.

Nick, I agree with Griffin, the shading on the Wildcat looks great.

Griffin, I'm not sure I would be having a nice day if that thing showed up in the neighbourhood.

I ordered some Tiger Airways decals for my A320, as I flew on one of their A320's at Easter. I'm hoping they arrive soon so that I can proceed with it.

Tony the Aribic script says something totally benign. I think I translated something like "Have a nice day, man". Lol. I didn't try very hard. 

Nick that wildcat is looking good. The subtle shading and panel lines look top notch.

I have the engine in place . and painted the bottom with ak interactive light gray . still haveing problems with the paint drying up the airbrush tried flow improver, thinning decreased air to 15psi it seems when I stop and start spraying the tip dries up 

That photo really shows of the weathering well Griffin. THe arabic script looks good, do you know what it says ? This build is really appealing to me.

Bish, that's come together nicely, there wasn't much left after it bought the farm. I'll be glad to see the layout once you have it ready.

My Airbus appears to have landed back on that Shelf again, I'd better taxi it over to the workbench again !

I'm still painting and weathering. I made the arabic script by printing it out and cutting it out with a Tamiya knife. Making a stencil. Love that knife. Making some scratch sand bags with super sculpy. Got to pop those suckers in the oven.

It's intresting when one goes back to their earler builds and see how far their skills have improved. I look back at my earler stuff, even the builds from 3 to 4 years ago, and am amazied how far I've come.

That should be a nice looking dio.

 

Thats one reason why i wanted to put these older builds back together and finish them off. Its nice to se how i have progressed. that and if i didn't, i would feel the need to re-buy the kits and do them again. And i think i have enought o do already

Made a re-start on kne a few days back. This is the kit, which as i mentioned earlier, i had finished years ago, 2009, but just hadn't completed the dio.

And after this, along with a few otehrs, took a dive off a shelf, this is what i was faced with.

After several nights work, it was all back together. I am pretty sure it was all there, at least there is nothing obvious thats missing. And i do still have the instructions, so that helped.

And so i could focus oin the figures and base. This was always going to be a simple dio based on a photo of the single protoype that this kit represents. At the time i built the kit, i had not long been back in the hobby and was focusing on the basics and getting to grips with new ideas in weathering.

So, just 2 figures, on the left a Dragon plastic figure and the right a Verlinden resin one.

Thats all at the minute. I am hoping to get this done by the end of the month so just a quicker re-build.

I'm looking forward to seeing that aggressor scheme on your Kfir. 

@Nick,

I'm not sure what issues you had with the paint, but, your F4F doesn't show you did. Nice recovery. You can just see some of the pre-shade, looks perfect.

I'm looking to get a little more progress on the Type 4 this weekend. I did glosss coat and added the decals, all five of them. Then I tried a grey-brown filter. But, I don't like how it interacted with the future gloss coat. My first time trying Wilder products. I'll post pictures later today.

preshaded the f4f and painted with ak interative int blue had some trouble with the paint but  I got though it 

Too Late to join?  I have one thats been sitting for years.  It's an ancient 1/48 ESCI KFIR I inteded to do in VMFT-401 Aggressor markings.  Somefit issues, but it is a unique addition to my aggressor collection.

Thanks guys. Rob I don't know which Tamiya kit it was. I salvaged it from my shoebox of forgotten models. It has periscope view ports around the gunners hatch and it had armor around the hatch as well but it is missing. I'm scratching some homemade armor.  I really appreciate the parts offer. I am just going to make due with what I have. It's a very very well used M113 that fell into the hands of Hezbollah. I will paint the inside of the hatch the green you called out. I appreciate it.

The inside color of the hatch is forest green or OD green if it is an older 70s-80s era vehicle.

Which kit do you have? I have a parts kit M113 that may have some pieces you need.

It's coming to life Griffin. I don't know what the inside hatch colour on a third owner M113 would be.

Still working on the paint. Did a bunch of dry brushing. Going to make some homemade armor around the turret you can see it in gray I still have to paint it to look like raw steel. I made some raw steel looking patches for the numerous holes that I have nothing to put in there and don't want to fill it with putty. I don't know if it's the best idea but.... the armor on M113s is aluminum. It's hard to weld steel to aluminum but it can be done. I'm actually a welding inspector/welding QC in real life. Does anyone know what the inside of the hatch color should be? I need to fix that. Thanks

I've starting painting. I am noticing I'm missing some small parts, never to be found. I'll have to scratch a few things but I'm not going to worry about it all. This is a third owner apc. It's got issues. 

 

Started putting the M113 back together. Wheels and side skirt. It broke off and took some chunks with it. I'm going to attach the tracks last. I'll staple them then run the joint up under the skirt. Nothing too exciting happening yet.

Bruce, as an occasional armor modeller, I've very interested in your weathering techniques. Looks good so far. The circular pattern for the pre shading is interesting.

That looks great so far. That masking technique looks like it really works well. Do you cut the masking tape in the center of the poster tack with a blade? I saw that somewhere.

The T-33 office look beautiful. And I like the start on the A320. Lately I've been thinking of looking into the Hasegawa 1/200 commercial jets. 

 

I have some progress to show on the Type 4, so here we go.

Here is the state of the kit as I restarted this shelf queen:

You may notice a few scratches on the mantlet and barrel. 

This was from a sneak attack from a metal 14" flash light. Lesson learned: If I'm going to shelf a model, shelf all the pieces.

Here is how the rubber band tracks look after I have painted them. I was not able to find AM tracks for this particular tank, and the reviews I have read stated the only drawback of this kit is the tracks. Doesn't look like I will get the desired sag, but, we will see.

Generally, late war Japanese armor were painted in three colors. The base color was called Parched Grass, which is a primer. Then a Green Grass color, and a Earth Brown color. These show the process of masking the base color. 

Then adding some preshading

Then adding the Earth Brown color. I should have extended the color more than I did. Noted for future builds.

And here it is with all three colors

I have some clean up to do. I used Vallejo Air Acrylics. and used Blue Tac White for the masking. Overall I'm happy with the outcome. Right now, the jury is out on whether I try the preshading like this again. We'll see after I get some weathering completed.
