                        Aircraft of the Commonwealth GB

                        The Commonwealth of Nations, formerly known as the British Commonwealth, currently comprises 53 member states most of whom were once part of the British Empire. Its members come from all 6 inhabited continents, account for approx. 20% of the worlds land surface and are home to approx. 1/3rd of the world’s population.

                        There are 16 Commonwealth realms, those nations who all share the same head of state, currently Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who is also head of the Commonwealth. There are 5 independent monarchies with the remaining members being republics. Member states range from the world’s 2nd largest country, Canada and the world’s largest democracy, India, to tiny remote islands in the Pacific.

                        This build follows on from the RAF 100th Anniversary GB, which, thanks to all who took part, was the most successful GB I have yet hosted. But this time, we extend to aircraft used by all branches of all current and former members of the Commonwealth.

                        So, to take part, your build should come from one of the 53 member states, listed here.

                        Please check the list if your not sure. 2 British colonies and a number of protectorates did not join the Commonwealth so would not be included.

                        Or one of the 3 former member states, Republic of Ireland, Maldive and Zimbabwe. Also included are any predecessor states, such as Rodeshia or Malaya. Build's can be from any point in history, not just the period the nation was a member of the Commonwealth, and from any branch of service including coast guard, Presidental aircraft and so on.

                        Captured aircraft and those from non Commonwealth nations but under the command of one also included, such as the Polish Sqn's flying with the RAF or the Eagle Sqn.

                        Now, for the standard stuff.

                        GB starts on 1st May 2018 and ends 28th April 2019. That marks the 70th Anniversary of the London Decleration which saw the begining of the modern Commonwealth.

                        Any scale and you can build OOB or throw as much stuff into it as you like.

                        Partially started kits are ok within reason and cross overs are ok.

                        And post as many pics as you can during your build.

                        And while i am sure there will be plenty of builds from the UK, canada, Australia, New Zealand and S Africa, i hope we will also get some from other nations which we might not see often in model form.

                        Hey Bish I’m in with an academy hawker hunter in 1/48th . I was surfing the web and found the Kuwait gained its independence from Britain in 1961 if that’s right that’s what I’m building if not I’ll keep looking 

                         

                        It did, but like the other nations in that region it has never been a member of the Commonwealth, so i am afraid kuwait would not count. Kuwait was a protectorate and never a British colony.

                        Bish, I have an old kit in the ole stash of an old subject, Matchbox Siskin IIIA in 1/72 scale:

                        The RCAF flew this type from 1926 until 1939 when they were replaced with the Hawker Hurricane.  Of special note, in 1929 an aerobatic team of three aircraft was formed.

                        yes, Yes, YES ! Another great topic for a GB Bish.

                        There are a lot of subjects I want to do, but for now mark me down for an Airfix Red Arrows BAe Hawk in 1/72 please. There is some possibility that tis will be followed or replaced with a 1/32 version of the same aircraft.

                        I don’t know, is it okay to enter the same kit in two different group builds at once?  I just entered into the Shelf of Doom 2018 build with my 1:72 scale BAe Hawk 200, but then I also notice that it fits the criteria for this goup build as well.  If so, I’d like to enter it.  If not, that’s cool, I can look through my stash and find something else that fits...

                        Haven’t even started it yet, just pulled it off the shelf. Still trying to get my BoB diorama done by April 1st, but after I wrap that up, I intend to get started on the Hawk.

                        Rob, wil be nice to see anotehr of those Airfix Harriers. Which scale and variant is yours.

                        I will have to look. Other than a ginormous Airfix Harrier I built in the 80s and the 1/72 scale Matchbox Harrier I built in the 70s, I know nothing about the plane other than they came with optional USMC markings. The one I plan on building is a smaller one so I guess it is 1/72 and the kit comes with some tube cement, plastic paint tubs and cheap paint brush. I got it at a thrift shop for around $5.

                        The kit has to use RAF type markings, correct?
