Hmm... just stumbled on this and it just so happens I have a realatively free schedule the next two days and since it is still open...  Propeller  My weekend madness skills are pretty rusty but if you'll let me play I'll see what I can dig out of the stash .

Sorry I didn't join in earlier but life happens.

Razor,

Welcome aboard! If you've got the time, this is as good a place as any to spend it! I was looking at my schedule and was thinking I might give it one last shot. Any one else care to give it one last go?

Thanks Lewbud.  Started about an hour ago but had to run out and do some errands.  I'll post my start up pic shortly.

Glad to see you've kept this going and that you kept the Calvin theme.  That's awesome!

Man I have not had to use a photo host since Photobucket went bat crap crazy.  Signed in to Flickr and finally figured it all out but I would not call their site user friendly.  (rant for the day)

Here is my start up photo.  Started a couple of hours ago and had to run some errands so have the cockpit assembled and base coat of paint.  Now that I have the picture host thing sorted I will get back at it and post more photos

Looks like you're off to a good start David!  I look forward to watching it come together. I've added you to the roster.  After I decided to do this last gasp, I started thinking about going out in a blaze of glory with something like an old school Revell 1/16 funny car or top fuel dragster. My mind tends to wander on my overnight shift, but when I got home this morning my sanity returned and I settled on Tamiya's 1/72 P-51D. I even managed to find an unused canopy mask set for it (I hate trying to mask canopies from scratch). Instead of boring OD over gray, this will be a postwar RCAF bird in gloss aluminum with high viz red wing and horizontal stabilizer panels, and blue pinstripes on the fuselage.  Should be a colorful addition to Buddy's Used Aircraft lot. Post more pics soon.

Sounds like a great choice lewbud.  Can't go wrong with these Tamiya kits.  Well... anything IS possible I suppose.  Whistling

Paint is on.  The splinter camo took longer than I had hoped but we should be able to get this done in time.

Looking good David! I think you got this!

Going to have to have a talk with the quatermaster because I ran out of a paint that I had plenty of last night. I get off work at 2200 CST so it will be a late session tonight when I get home. Nothing pic worthy other than the proof of unstartedness. A double is being attempted.

Looking forward to your double finale there lewbud.

I am calling mine done with a few hours to spare.  This was a pleasure to build after having several short run kits on my bench.  The only issue I had was with the fuselage band which if this wasn't a speed build I would have taken the time to mask and paint it.

Thanks for letting me join so late into this build lewbud.  I had a blast.  I will have to mark it on my calendar for next November.

oh yeah... the finished pics.

Nice looking Dora!

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

That Dora looks great David! Congratulations on. job well done.

GA bring it on! Can't wait to see what you do with that kit.

As for me, with 11 hours to go I finally have two blobs of plastic that look like aircraft. I'd forgotten how easily these little kits fall together. A couple of things I didn't know or forgot. If you want to do a late war or post war bird with the uncuffed prop, you have to get the F-51D kit. Fortunately, I had one in my stash. If you buy the Tuskeegee Airmen kit, you get a set of canopy masks. And finally, like Spitfires, you can never have too many Mustangs. If I get these done, these will make numbers 5 and 6. Four are US OD over gray and one Israei in blue and tan. One will be a post war Canadian bird and the other will be a Guatemalan bird. Glue should be set now, time for some filling and sanding. Pics will have to wait until I get to work tomorrow since I haven't figured out how to post from my phone.

Bob,

Using good ol' Tamiya rattle cans. Anti-glare panel has been painted and masked and a coat of Tamiya Gloss Aluminum has been applied. In about 30-45 minutes, it should be dry enough to mask and apply a coat of Tamiya Bright Red. It's going to be tight but I should get one finished. The only subassemblies left to paint are the shrouded exhausts, prop, and spinner. The Guatemalan bird will have to wait.

Thank you sir.  The reason I ask is that I have an F-51 I'm thinking about building and keep seeing conflicting pictures-what look like unpainted aluminum and then seeing same squadron/same time and they look to have been painted.  I am anxious to see your results

Bob,

I'll post pics at some point when I get to work and things settle down.  If you're going to do a painted aluminum finish, I think TS-17 (Tamiya Gloss Aluminum) will get you there.  I grabbed the Tamiya Matte Black for the base by mistake so mine is probably a little bit more grainy than if I'd used gloss black as the base. Tamiya has AS12, which is supposed to replicate polished metal, but I don't have much experience with it (maybe I'll try it on my next Stang). One more thing, I taped the heck out of the Mustang to mask the red areas and it didn't lift. There was maybe an hour to an hour and a half between the time I shot the aluminum until the time I masked it.  It stayed masked for a couple hours after that, no lifting.

Now for the sitrep. Finish time was 2220 last night. I didn't make it. About eight hours to go, I made the decision to concentrate on getting the Canadian bird done instead of the simpler Guatemalan. That, along with some poor time management at the beginning doomed this attempt. Has any one heard from GA?

Front page is updated with David's gorgeous Dora.

GA,

I see an interesting little dio in the making. Keep it up!

Now for pics of my latest attempt.

Proof of nonstartedness.

First complete subassemblies painted. While the Tamiya Red Tail kit gives you an uncut canopy mask set, your on your own for the wheels. In this case an Eduard set is doing double duty.

Wings are done.

Pits are done. According to the Leading Edge decal sheet for the Canadian bird, the pit is black. Since the Guatemalan bird may have come from Canada, I went with a black pit for it as well.

A little over 36 hours in and we have something that looks like airplanes.  At this point I should have made the decision to focus on one aircraft, but didn't.

At some point in the afternoon, I did decide to go focus on one aircraft but it was the more difficult of the two. Now all shiny.

She's got her mask on for the paint fight that's coming.

The red is on and drying. I thought I used Tamiya Bright Red out of the rattle can, but it was Italian Red instead. In the set are decals for some birds with red lightning bolts going down the sides of the fuselage and I think that the Bright Red will be a better match for that. I also didn't realize how translucent the Italian red was until I had to fix a spot on the underside of the wing. Even though I primered over it, you can still see a tonal difference.

The decalling process has begun. Decals are by Leading Edge and portray P-51's from Western Canada. If I remember right, mine is from 442 Squadron "City of New Westminster" British Columbia.

The underside. The silver circles are decals provided in the set. You also get some resin antennae for certain aircraft. Mine will have one.

And that is where she sits right now. All that's left to paint is the spinner, tail wheel, and radiator exhast door. Will get back to her in the afternoon after I wake up from my overnight shift.

Oh cool! A canadian mustang :) Something canadian to add color to the GB. :)

Will watch with interest.

I've added a 1st coat of primer, going to let it dry then on to painting and the dio.

Lewbud-the paint on your Mustang turned out very nice-I'm going to be hard pressed to not use the Tamiya rattle can option on my next BMF.  Did you use a gloss black base?

German Armour-great progress-looking forward to more progress pics.

Bob,

I used Tamiya's Matte Black for the base. After I finish these two, I'm building one for the Shelf of Doom GB. It's been so long since I've worked on it, I don't remember what markings I was going to use on it. I'm thinking about using Tamiya's AS-12 over a gloss black base and seeing how that works for a bare metal aircraft. I'm thinking postwar Ethiopian markings.

Lewbud, nice progress on your mustang.  You're a braver man than me for attempting an aluminum finish in a speed build.  Looking forward to it's completion.

GA, looking forward to seeing your dio that you have planned for your build.

I think a fully rigged sailing ship would do.Big Smile

Thanks Razor. Got a few more decals applied between waking up and having to go to work.

More tomorrow.
