That looks fantastic Lost! I seem to have lost my nack for painting wood lately.

In the closing stages, I remember how I don't like biplanes and rigging. This is not a Wingnut wings model, so there was a lot of slack in the struts and wings. My dryfit was cursory and I paid for it. To keep it all together a lot of tape and big lumps of glue were used. I am expecting to hear a big twang in the middle of the night as it all self destructs.

After a couple of points wishing for extra hands, the rigging was done and stable, prop and wheels were added and we are done! 47 hours to get this one done. Clock's a little fuzzy but you know you can trust me...

Lewbud, thanks again for another great Weekend GB, its always good to blow out the cobwebs for a fun result.

Thanks also to Brian who gave me the model as a present!

Now a chance to go back and enjoy the rest of the builds

Thanks

Piers

Thanks Guys, thought I had a shed load of time until it came to putting on the top wing and rigging! There are times when an extra hand, good eyes and steady fingers would be a good thing…

BD, think I said it before, but it bears saying gain, super result on the YAK. The fine work on the white lines around the tail got you a great result. Only minutes waiting to mask lacquers? That’s amazing, I gave the acrylics at last a couple of hours. When I do gloss, I wait for at least five days… Great colour scheme too, the decals pop on the dark background.

Hey SD, too bad the T-80 didn’t come through in time, but there were a lot of issues for you to get through in the 48 hours. Look on the bright side – you have a great model to show for it and now you have to build another one!

BH – I had forgotten that tradition you just made up about celebrating the successful completion of a Weekend Madness build with a shot of your favourite libation. I had a glass of red wine, then another for your build, then one for BD, one for DB, one for BB and one for doobeedoobeedoo. That’s as much as I remember.

By the way, really like the Ha Go, the camo has come up beautifully. It is always great to pick up new techniques whilst we do the GBs, and Steve is a great source of knowledge!

BB – always impressed by anyone who can get a gloss paint job to dry in the 48 hours. The end result is fantastic. The Mustang is full of attitude and ready to go. And it’s great that you have a cat than can do headers…

DB The La 5 has come out really well considering your kit report on the way through. The finish is great and it looks the part. BTW, love the 4 things you learnt last weekend!

Once again Lew, thanks for running Weekend Madness, not sure I can fit another build in unless it is between Xmas and New Year. But I will be back next year and will start on the next Badge soon…

Lost - great job on the SPAD. I saw you doing a biplane for the weekend build and thought, "Yeah...this guy's crazy." But you nailed it, rigging and all. And not on a kit with good fit to begin with, so well done.

Holy crap!  I can finally log in again.  That was a pain.

Great builds guys.  Gutsy rigging a bi-plane.  Now that I know the forum is working again I will get one out this weekend and more to follow.

It's good to log in again.

Brandon, Piers,

Great job on your builds! I'll update the front page when I get to work tomorrow.

As for the Global Hawk, it didn't make it and still sits unfinished on my work table. I'll have to check my schedule before I go for attempt #3.

Caveman

Holy crap!  I can finally log in again.  That was a pain.

Same here.  Been trying to access the forums for a week thinking it was me, turns out it was the site.  Called FSM yesterday for assistance and today I FINALLY have access.  Sheeeesh!!

First I want to say Thank You for all the nice comments about the Ha-Go.  Its certainly not my best work, but I'm still proud of what I was able to do in the short time and I tried some things I never did before!

So....getting caught up on all the accomplishments:

Very nice looking T-62 Sailing_Dutchman!  Luv the camo on that braille scale armor!

Brandon, that is one super looking Yak-1B!  I agree with everyone - beautiful pit work!!  Thanks for posting the updated photos!

6 color camo on a 1/72 biplane with rigging in less than 48hrs??  AMAZING work lostagain!  I don't know how you did it, I barely made it with a 3 tone camo job!  Yes dude!

A note on the "libation tradition" - apparently it started in the 2015 Weekend Madness GB when I noticed some liquor bottles present in the WIP photos of a couple of entries.  I thought that was a pretty cool idea and started posting my completed pics with a bottle/glass of whatever was my current favorite.  Here's the one from 2015:

Now I'm not condoning drinking and modeling....too dangerous with sharp blades, pointy tools and paint fumes!! Stick out tongue  But a small drink afterwards to celebrate another completed model on the display shelf...gotta live a little!!  BTW, who says it has to be alcohol - just your favorite drink...why not throw some green veggies into the juicer and do a organic smoothie!!Drinks

Also, I think it was lewbud who mentioned that the camo on the Ha-Go was kind of garish.  TBH I was in total agreement, so this past weekend I took the liberty of spraying a heavily thinned coat of Tamiya Khaki lightened with a bit of Buff (like 85% thinner) to dust it up and tone down the colors. I think it looks a little better now.

I was thinking of doing another 48 hr build, but I have too many other projects I need to complete before the end of year.  I'm sticking around til the GB ends to see what other outstanding builds are completed in 48 hrs of modeling madness! Toast

Apologies bufflehead, as soon as I saw your 2015 post I remembered your shot then and knew I had spoken out of turn!

Now I feel like I need to make amends and have a drink for each of the previous year's missed libations...

I did head out to the recycling bin and find the bottle from last Sunday:

I may need to build a bigger model or drink a smaller bottle next time.

Lost,

I think a bigger model might be necessary!

Well, here is strike two for this group build. I started the Global Hawk on 12/6/18. I thought, it's a relatively simple kit, 36 pieces, what on earth could go wrong? Never ask a question you don't really want the answer to. Here's the pics.

Proof of unstartedness:

Basic mockup. This thing is yuge!!!

The bottom of the fuselage. The square piece is important as it helps align the wings and allows them to snap in place. If you are planning to build this for a contest, the wing to wingroot gap might be a little large for you (you might want to live with it to make the model easier to transport). But, if you're building it to sit on the shelf, it's just fine.

The port side of the fuselage ready to be assembled. The instructions call for 10g of weight in the nose. Where you're going to put it, I have no idea as it's really cramped in there.

The fuselage is together. The reviews I read said that the fit for this kit was pretty good. I think they're idea of good and mine are very different. There is a very nasty seam on top of the engine pod. Normally I would backstop it with superglue on the underside, but I didn't find my superglue until after I'd closed it up and applied a second helping of putty. There is also some serious gappage where the beavertail meets the rear fuselage and it's kind of a pain to get to if you've already installed the V-tail.

All mocked up and no place to go. If you look closely, you can see the unfilled seam on top of the engine pod.

Just to show how yuge this bird is. That is a Platz 1/72 Predator (built successfully for an earlier Weekend GB). The Predator is about the size of a P-51, so it's not a small aircraft.

I would have posted these pictures earlier, but there was that whole not being able to log in for a week thing happening. Since these pictures were taken, I've sanded and primered the fuselage, and painted the bottom of the wings gunship gray. The fuselage will be overall gunship gray, with the radome being painted a different shade of gray to simulate the discoloration of it by the sun. There are a couple of teardrop shaped fairings on each side of the fuselage that will be painted a very dark gray. I've seen them on other airframes, but not sure if this bird had them painted at one time. We'll call it artistic licesense. I'll probably try for something starting tomorrow as it's one of my overnight shifts. I'm off Monday and don't have to be at work until 2100 Tuesday. Don't know what it will be yet. Still waiting on that Panzer with the full interior SD. Ya thought I forgot about that didn't ya?Devil

Lost-thank you for the kind words....and Jake, our header making cat thanks you too.  And I must say that you did a great job on the SPAD-and rigged no less...I'm still afraid of tackling that task.

Brandon-your Yak is very impressive-still thinking about pulling my Accurate Miniatures Yak-1 out of the stash for this GB...or next year...

Lewbud-looking forward to more pics-looks like interesting projects.

Thanks Bob. Will post when I have something pic worthy.  Instead of starting something new, I elected to keep working on the Global Hawk. Wings are now a fairly smooth gloss white (Tamiya gloss white for the win) and ready for decals. I still need to paint the landing gear bays white and gloss coat the undersides of the wings. The fuselage is now gunship gray. I was going to paint the radome a different shade of gray, but decided not to. I'll paint the teardrop shaped fairings tomorrow after I wake up. Have a few more bits and bobs to paint, then she'll be ready for gloss and decals.

Then the aluminum coat.

Now comes the hard part, waiting for everything to dry to finish it!

Unfortunately, the 48 came and I was short.Sad

Some decals on, but no landing gear or props.  Plus, the orange decal on the fuselage looks like, well, you know what.  Need to stop by the LHS tomorrow for orange paint and do it the right way.
