C-47 Skytrain/Dakota/DC-3 GB
Posted by Keyda81 on Friday, October 12, 2018 8:39 AM

This will be a group build for the Douglas C-47 Skytrain/Dakota/DC-3.

Any variation/conversion will be allowed, including civil airliners, Navy, RAF, Super DC-3's, you name it!  Also any scale you choose is fine.

Start date will be December 1st, 2018 and end date June 6th, 2019. GB has been extended to June 6th, 2020.  So you'll have roughly 6 months to complete your build.  If you can't complete it in that time frame, please just continue on until you finish up.

Scratch building, aftermarket parts, or decals are also allowed. Partially started and cross overs allowed as well.

If you would like to participate just let me know by posting in this theard, and I'll get a roster going.

This is also my first time hosting a GB, so if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to let me know!  Same goes if you have any questions.

I attempted to make a few badges, although I'm not very good at it, lol.

Looking forward to building with everyone, can't wait to get started!

Keyda,

Go ahead and put me down on the roster, though I may get a late start due to other commitments.  Smile

The kit I am going to build is an odd one.  It's the Walthers Cornerstone Series HO scale Aircraft Kit C-47 #933-1150.  Yep!  HO scale!

https://www.modelingmadness.com/scott/civil/previews/9331164.htm

It has no interior or cockpit, but I may scratch something up for the cockpit, or if I can find some HO scale pilot figures!  Big Smile

Thanks,

Eagle90, I can't wait either, lol.  I would of started it sooner, but I have another GB I've commited to.

GAF, You can start any time after the 1st of Dec.  Plenty of room for scratch building in that kit!  I'll be venturing into some scratch building myself on this one!

keavdog, That DC-3 must be tiny!  I have a 1/200 Herc, and that is pretty small, lol.  I admire you guys that work on stuff so small, I don't know how you do it.  I'm so clumsy with small parts!

I'd forgotten about that one. What decals do you have? I see vintageflyer has a couple of sets.

I figured it would be a change of pace from either the Monogram or the Italeri.  I did a nice Italeri one in Bish's "D-Day GB" for the 70th anniversary.  Smile

The kit is not the one I linked above (which was just to show what the kit was like).  It has decals for two birds out of the 89th TCS, 438th TCG (code letters"4U") and one called Factory Fresh from 1943.  I hope to find one from the CBI to represent as I've been reading up a bit on the effort to supply China during the war.  I will probably print any decals I may need, though I certainly have enough serial numbers on the decal sheet to make any variation I may need.  Except for the lack of interior, it looks like a decent kit.

Gary

Found a picture of "Factory Fresh" online:

Keyda,

Hi.  You can put me down for a 1/72 scale BT-76 conversion.  I ordered the Lonestar Models kit for the US Forest Service Smokejumper aircraft that Lewbud provided info on.  I'm still not sure what base kit I will use, since the conversion kit says it was developed for the Italeria craft, but that it should work on most any 1/72 scale kit.

I enjoyed reading "Flying the Hump" by Don Downie. It's a color photo collection, really informative. Downie flew C-46's so most of the a/c photos are of those.

It's a good book.

I've yet to read that, but would like to.  I've been reading articles mostly, and on the resupply effort for the Flying Tigers.

Also considering a C-47 from the 1st Air Commando group.

Really need to pick this one up.  I have the one for the ETO and MTO.

I have the Mono 1/48 AC version, but is a partial start with the interior painted and floor and pit in it, and a partial start on the wing center section....would guess about 20% complete.

If allowed, put me down.  If not, no worries.  Got two to finish up first, plus some house remodel to work on too.

PFJN, plasticjunkie, and goldhammer you've all been added to the roster!  No worries goldhamer, started is okay with me.

Can't wait to start this.  I dug the kit out to add the last of my aftermarket bits I've purchased to the box, and I wanted to dive in!  Lol.  This will certainly be my most involved build so far.  I've got a bunch of aftermarket and materials for scratch building!

Keyda, I'm pondering joining this group build. Is the idea that we all build our own airplane, discuss the build, show build progress, then show off the finished masterpiece? I've never participated in anything like this before. I think I can accomplish the build in the allotted six months though.

While doing my research, though, on which kit to build, I thought of Ice Pilots and Buffalo Joe and his old airplanes. Tried to find Buffalo Airways DC-3 decals here in the lower 48, but came up with zip. Also looked for decals for the VAC Tico Belle, our Florida C-47. Right now I'm trying to find an Airfix C-47 kit.

So, I like have six weeks to make my decision, right?

I'm working on a post that'll have the sprue shots, a photo of my subject (also a restored museum plane), and whatever I have on the decals.

Frank, I've uncovered all kinds of Goonie Bird decals. Take a look at the scalemates page for "all C-47 models". Surprising amount of stuff.

Keyda, based on the hall passes you've been handing out, you might add "partially started and crossovers ok". That'll attract more flies too.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I'll check that out, GMorrison. I did find some MATS decals in various scales on eBat just now. I contacted the seller to find out just how good they are. I really don't want some one's home made decals for something like this.

I knew I was forgetting something, lol.  I'll get to work on that right now.

fotofrank, That is the main idea!  But instead of everyone building whatever, they all have a common theme, in this case the C-47/DC-3.  Yep roughly six weeks until the start date!  Would be glad to have you on board.

GMorrison, I will add that onto the first post!

Trading Post- I have a really nice set of decals (KLM or Swissair) that I've scanned and would be happy to trade for something. I'll keep the basic stencils.

The KLM are the classic "Flying Dutchman" scheme with the tri-color tail. Really a good looking airplane.

Yeah, since this is open to DC-3's as well as C-47's and other variants of the Gooneybird, I'd really like to do an unusual livery as opposed to an O.D. and gray airplane. Of course, if I can fine decals for Tico Belle, that all changes. My wife and I flew on Tico Belle back in the 80's from Titusville to Amelia Island, FL, where the VAC flew an airshow.

Not sure if you have tried it before, but making your own decals is something to consider.  It can be a bit of a pain in the rear, but it's slightly less frustrating than trying to hunt down decals.  I've made my own a few times with our printer, Testors decal paper and bonder spray.

I made these ones for Whiskey 7.  Picture kind of sucks, cause they are in a ziploc bag with a piece of wax paper over them.

I might be intrested. I was just looking at an Airfix Dakota this afternoon for Bish's Airfix build starting in Jan.

Put me down as a maybe.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

That's cool Gary.

It wouldn't be too hard to find decals, in fact, I might already have some. I'll think about it.

BTW, I'd be killing 3 birds with one stone LOL. DC-3, NASA and Airfix.

I'd like to do a Monogram DC-3 in 1/48. I have Draw Decals of Delta Ship 41.

Anyone used Draw decals before?
