I'm not much on the salt traetment myself, never worked for me. For my hulls, when I do actually build a ship on a stand instead of a seascape, I'll use an airbrush, oils, and drybrushing to get the effect I want. Unless it's just out of the yard it'll have a skum line, barnicals, and other nasties attacing themselves to the "anitfouling" paint and boot top.

I like your boot top and the fading, almost scraping on the bow (saltwater is a hell-of-an abrasive), but would go darker overall.

Bill & Steve, When you say go darker are you both saying the red should be darker? 

If so I'm thinking of going over it with a "smoke". Any thoughts on that or would you add black to the hull red I used and spray a mist coat over all of it? I'd like something to fade everything together. I think I can bring all our odeas together on this and finish it out.

Yes, a little darker red, with streaks of faded red. I never thought about a smoke coat. You can give it a try.

While I was working on getting the walls up and decals on I had an epiphany while wandering through Home Depot :-) I realized last week that the scheme I was doing with the sailors on deck required the elevators to be UP. Hmmm, going to make it way harder to see in the hangar bay when it's shadowed by the elevators. Ran by the magnet rack and found they have many more sizes now! So, after seeing the squirrel, I ventured off and started working on an elevator instead lol

Yep, magnets are tight!. You can use them to suspend a plane so it looks like it's flying. Look ma, no strings!

      I have a quick question for you guys. I want to fold the wings on the planes. How should I go about doin this?

I messed around and finally found something that kept the wing tips attached  I started with plane upside down. using a fine razor saw ai cut across the wingfold joint. Fortunately all my planes had a mark on both leading and trailing edge. Making sure the edges had a slight cut and that I didn't go more than half way through resulted in folds where the wing stayed attached. My preference was this look rather than cutting off the tip and gluing it vertical. I just thought it looked better. See what kind of answers you get and pick what you like best 

please excuse the seam lines. These were my practice set and I hadn't realized where the mold lines were till after i got paint on them...of course lol

I believe Mongoose answered that with he's new idea, otherwise I wouldn't have a clue either.

Smart Chris, the plastic will hold much better than the glue would.

Are you going to do that to the Tomcat's wings?

Mongoose: I'd not have thought of using magnets to hold the elevators in place- clever idea and it looks good!!! 

Mongoose: I tried your technique last night on one a test plane and it turned out perfect. It will be a little time consuming but makes the model more realistic.

Now onto progress from the weekend. It has rained the past three days and will continue to do so for a couple more days so I have not been able to prime parts for the deck and superstructure. Because of this I decided to start on the base. I mashed together two water base techniques I have seen done on YouTube, aluminum foil and toilet paper (No wonder there is a toilet paper shortage).

I was also able to finish up the propellers and rudders on the ship and she will be ready for priming once I clean the gaps up.

Oh one thing I forgot about...I bent the wings and then realized I would have to put tape over every one to paint the top of the planes. Duh! If you can I would suiggest painting bottom and top 1st then doing the bending. I think it could be cleaner based on what I did. Give it some thought at least before having one of my senior moments lol

Horribly dreary and rainy day here. Finished up decals in the hangar bay! Here's just a broad pic of them to show how it's turning out.  clearcoat and then it's back on the planes. Gotta start the roof as well...

you might see a decal or two(?) from my F-18 haha didn't have any triangles so I cut them from the danger decals for the cockpit!

Edit- MC asked how I did the dots for tie-downs. I did the design on my Silhouette Cameo3, printed onto medium tac clear friskett film, rolled out on the deck and sprayed line after line in white and light gray lol Beats the heck out of the toothpick method i may have to use on the flight deck where there are raised panel lines to call them out. Must think about that someday...

Ready to add an Air Wing! Flat coat on walls, hoses added to hangers on wall, some railing and ladders from the FFG added, plus a few misc piping runs put up to break up the walls a bit. Super happy with the mural too.

I got the base all painted up last night. It still needs a gloss coat and the sides of the board need to be cleaned up and painted black. I am in need of some advice on where to place cotton to represent sea spray. 

Hopefully I can get back to finishing up the air wing when I get more time at the bench this weekend.

Anywhere there may be white caps or turbulence.

I will spray the water with a light blue where the turbulence will be, add some cotton, then use thin acrylic varnish over that, and don't forget to put the cotton at the boundry layer at the hull.

John if you go back around page 41 toward the bottom MC has some great detail shots that show where he added the cotton and the coloring. Between there and pg47 Ben has some shots of his carrier following MC's tutorial and then in that same range you can find some of my USS New York as well but I think the carrier and MC's tutorial is what you want.

John: No expert here but it looks cool!!!

Wet it with the Varnish and add some very small pieces by pulling a few threads out of the cotton ball or whatever you are using and add them between the wakes. If you look at the refernce photo, white caps are all along the wake and disturbance. Most of the seascape mistakes are made by builders don't use enough turbulance and white water.

Here's a 1/700 from Kostas Katseas that show what I'm talking about. Just a random pattern of turbulence.

Also, be mindfull of the Kelvin wave system. There is a very precise mathamatical construct to every wake patern, be it a ship, duck or bug on the water...it's all the same. Here's an artical I found that helped me.

Unless it's a large spray, the white water needs to be "wet" like foam
