Weekend Madness 2021

Even though the weekend's over, I thought I'd do a little Matchbox style base for the Airfix Stalin tank.

Done was a super fun build, tried a few new things, textured the hull and turret, and did hair spay paint distressing. Had a lot of fun on this one.

I was hoping to start my build today but life has conspired against me.  I hope to start later this week.  We shall see...

Caveman, did you know that the Santa Fe actually ran an airfreight service for a brief time called Santa Fe Skyway. But they flew DC-4s, not Ekranoplans.

ok....here it is....12hour overdue, but I got it done!

She is ugly, close up, but should look just fine in my display case...

 

This kit fought me to the bitter end.  The last step necessary was to install the glass.  The kit glass was horrendous.  I ended up making the front glass out of plastic blisster packaging, and the side glass ( as you can probable tell, were made from white glue, and are still drying.

 

Overall, I really like how this scheme turned out on this kit.  But, I will probably try to avoid AMP kits in the future! (at least for these weekend madness builds!)

 

Also, I was trying to drum up support and others to join in on the group build, and I did get a couple...search the hashtag #weekendslammerbuild on facebook and the instagram to check them out!

Now THAT is different.  Great idea.  Now that I see it finished I can see where you got the idea.

Well, I'm calling her done with an hour and a half to spare.  Usually I'm right down to the wire.  Took me forever to mask and unmask her, no decals here!  I'll post some better pictures when I have better lighting.  I always seem to finish at night.

My hats off to all of you. Some really excellent builds, and some challenging ones too. I reckon that Gee Bee would take me a year, so really well done. Both of the Japanese aircraft are eye catching. 

I'll take a moment to honor Buddy, I think he'd be happy with us.

I'm really pleased with the weekend. I got this model done, laid 100 square metres of turf in the backyard, then dug out and prepared and laid another 30 metres of it on the nature strip.

And, DONE. One hour to spare. Very nice kit and it builds very well. I just don't like 1/72, they are too small for me. Especially today with my super shakey hands. But, I pulled it off and although not perfect I am very happy with how it turned out. Now to find one in 1/48.

Buddy, we all miss you and wish you had been here for this. This one is for you my friend.

Hey guys!  I lost my internet last nite so wasn't able to post.  Not that there is much to see.  This kit is rather simple but goes together well.  Basic pit and only a few parts for the fuse.  Mostly together and in first coat of paint.  With ten hours to go, I should be OK.

I am gonna be down to the wire this year. I have it cleared and sitting in the dehydrater drying now. All I need to do is pull the masking off the canopy and take pics. Stay tuned.

Justin, that's too bad. This challange can be difficult. I missed the deadline last year on my first try. That's going to be cool though.

Well, despite having been at it for the better part of 16 hours today, I've had it.  I am beat.  My back and hind end hurt from being in this chair.

I can definitely get is finished this weekend, but, as my 48 ends at 7:30 tomorrow morning (EST), I am just not gonna make it by then.

This short run kit fought me just about every step of the way, with misaligned molds, flash, seam lines on just about every part...on top of the poor fit...but, here is my final update for day two...It probably didnt help that I was going for a what if/dieselpunk Santa Fe transport, or that I was trying a new silver paint....

Well, her is Big Chief, as I head to bed...

After all the bodywork was 'adequate', I but Big Chiefinto black primer, using Mr. Surfacer 1500 in a rattlecan:

Then, I called in reinforcements (the modeling fluid) to try and help get it across that goal line after getting the base silver on...

I used Vallejo's Liquid Silver' Alcohol based silver as the base color

and decided to decal the fuselage so that I knew exactly where to tape out for the red upper/front surfaces...

I made it ! Here's a couple of rather hurried photos of the finished model, within time, then a couple of better photos. I had to rush out 20 minutes before close to take my daughter to work. I've realised that I'd broken on of the road wheels, and omitted to attach the machine gun. Both of these have now been done.

I've done some colour modulation, but its hard to see in these photos. The white circles were masked and painted, as the decals were off centre and yellowed. The red stars were cut from them. It got a quick pin wash and some weathering and chipping with various pencils, due to lack of time, or I would have taken it further.

The Josef Stalin III tank remained in service until 1955, slightly outliving it's namesake.

Great stuff folks. Sorry Bill, but I have to pull out of the build. My boat went up on the slip on Friday and I'm flat out trying to get her done and back in the water before I go broke.
