In 2022 and over the next few years i'll continue the theme of manufacture Group Builds. I'll be doing one a year alternating between German and British companies. And for 2022, that company will be Junkers.
The company was founded by Hugo Junkers in 1895, originally building boilers and radiators. They turned to aircraft production just before the start of WW1, their first design, the J 1, the first flyable aircraft to have an all metal structure. A few of their dsigns served during WW1, including a couple of ground attack aircraft. After the war they continued to design and build aircraft, including the W 33. One of these, the Breman, was the first heavier than air aircraft to make the more difficult east to west crossing of the Atlantic none stop. The company almost collapsed in the early 1930's, and with the arrival of National Socialisim, it was taken over by the newgoverment whichc did not trust Hugo Junkers. He died in 1935 and soon after his widow gave over all control and interests to the Reich.
The company's aircraft played a leading role in German military operations in WW2. The Ju 52, Ju 87 and Ju 88 all played vital roles in the campaigns of the early war and all fought on till the end, with the Ju 88 being produced in a huge range of variants.
In addition to aircraft, the company also produced engines. Seperated from the parent company in 1923, Junkers Jumo built engines wihich powered a number of aircraft in WW2, both Junkers and other companies. These included the 004 jet engine which powered the Me 262 and Ar 234.
The company survived after the war and was involved in research into areospace desins. In the 1960's it was absorded into MBB and the Junkers name vanished in 1969.
So much for the history, the GB is open to all Junkers designs, those that entered service and those that didn't. Its also open to aiy aircraft powered by a Junkers Jumo engine. But note that with some aircrfat, only certain variants used a Jumo, such as the early variants of the Bf 109 and 110.
Build starts on 1st Jan and runs throughout 2022.
Partial builds allowed as are cross overs.
Plenty of pics.
If you need some ideas, check out the Junkers Wiki page which includes a list of anircraft and engines.
