John- my car the 312T3. I've seen photos of Villeneuve's car after the crash, but it's a pile of tin.

G- yes that would make sense.

GM,

I don't know about the newer cars, but the 1970 era cars were usually an alumimun color.  You don't get to see a lot of photos of the belly of F-1 cars, unless they turn turtle on the track.  I have a book with a photo of a Tyrrell P34 being recovered by a crane after a serious crash, and its underside was unpainted aluminum.  I remember seeing a number of builds of cars in the 1980-1990 turbo era, and some had what looked like an unpainted wood skid plate attached to the car's underside.  The newer cars might be made of composites, so their undersides might reflect that.

Nice bunch of goodies there wpwar.

GM - who are you asking?  In my case the bottom is moulded in satin black - Typicall Tamiya.

Thanks,

John

So what color is the bottom of the ground effect or otherwise flat bottomed car? We never see it. Body color?

Got started over the weekend.  Had to use aggressive tools to remove the thick molded in seats belts.  Still need to clean up the scratches on the seat.  Bought a set of blue fabric belts.  It takes a little extra time but I don't trust my hand brushing skills to paint those molded in belts.  The tub has those tiny fasteners that get painted silver or aluminum.  I purchased a photo etch set that includes them.  Also trying a Goodyear Eagle tire stencil instead of those reverse decals.  Drilled holes in the data/radio transmitter ( I think that's what they are) for future wires.

Thanks John-that seals the deal-I need pull the kit out and make sure but I'm guessing it's standard Tamiya quality.  Only part that may need paint is the air intake scoop-multiple pieces requiring glue but I'm hopefully that a little sanding & polishing will suffice.  I have an old Monogram Corvette molded in black that will by my test mule shortly.

PS-and that's a great looking Porsche!

Hey Bob - this is out of the box.  Super nice finish.  I feel the same way about most of the black parts - they call out satin black and they are cast in a perfect satin black.  Not lazy, but not stupid either.

I did this Porsche from Tamiya ways back and the black was perfect out of the box.  I clear coated and polished

Thanks,

John

Not a lot done, but I started.

The body is a pretty thick plastic with a fantastic finish.  One of those I'd consider just glossing.  I'll have to put the optivisor on and look it over in detail but wow.

John-have you done any polishing or is this the 'out of the box' picture?

I'm looking forward to your results-I'd really like to not have to paint the Lotus 78-I hate painting gloss black.

Thanks

Bob

The Lotus Turbine car was an Indy car.  Not sure about the ss 100 (mabye pre F1 Grand Prix?).  I don't think the Lotus Super 7 is in class either.

Check out Tamiya Honda RA272 or Coventry Climax kits.  Great models and the Tamiya kits are still priced pretty fairly.  And Italeri has some beautiful early Grand Prix cars in 1/12 but up there in $$$

Thanks,

John

Knowing nothing about the genre, I will ask some stupid questions, would the Tamiya Lotus Super 7 Series II qualify?  Airfix Lotus Turbine Car?  Matchbox Jaguar SS 100?

The Brabham's front wheels were individual sprues, so maybe I got a leftover or something.

The triangular body is distinctive.  The flat-12 is so... flat.  Big Smile

Dang, that Sephora pop-up ad is super annoying.  I feel like someone is fondling me when the frame squeezes me in.  Devil

Quite the project their Bill.

Curious about the black vs white wheel G.  Same tree?

Thanks,

John

I de-chromed the Brabham's parts this past weekend, but the plating on the rear wheels were really subborn.  Everything else just washed away after a soak in Purple Power.  Another oddity was that one front wheel was molded in white, the other in black.

I need to go back to the rear wheels for one more round of cleaning.  I think I have a can of Easy-Off under the sink.

Those badges are great!

I have the thing taken apart except for the engine core, which will all get painted aluminum except for some details. The model won't steer again, which I don't care about. The whole inside of the tub is aluminum not red. I managed to only stick myself once with the Xacto. Mostly just a lot of careful prying and popping.

Stripped off all of the chrome except for the roll bar, which is probably chrome plated steel. The plating came off easily with oven cleaner. It's all polished aluminum.

Red paint, decals on order. Harness set received.

Here's the 1:1. Lovely car.

I read this morning that Las Vegas will host a Formula-1 race next year.  And the 2-mile road track is supposed to go down the strip (!!!).

Hobbyworld-USA is their US distributor.  I think they recently re-did their site and it's a bit clunky.  I have ordered Revell paints from them in the past as they are the US distributor for them as well.

BNA (Australia) are fantastic as well but it looks like they are out

It's been a while since I built a car. I think I want a jar of Zero Paint 323 scuderia red.

Where to buy here in the US, or where else?

DRUMS01

WPWAR11, I used TS-34 Camel Yellow Spray Lacquer 100ml Tamiya TAM85034.

GREG, That is the 1/12 Tamiya kit. It fell together very well.

Ben

I'll use the same paint.  Thanks for that.

Bill, I have not ordered anything from them since before COVID. Then they were reliable but it took around three weeks +.....

Don't know how they are now though?

That's what I was thinking!  Man you have to love Tamiya details - looks awesome just sitting there unpainted.

Thanks,

Yes, no F1 race is complete without Ferrari.  Best of luck taking the kit apart GM!
