G'day Luke,

The AeroMaster decals for the DAP Beaufighter Mk XXI's, were not based in Darwin, with the AeroMaster sheet 48-340 shows two Aussie aircraft, A8-186 'Beau-Gunsville' DU-I of 22 Sqn. This aircraft is in the Camden Museum, it's marking are fiction, '186' carried no artwork or codes in it's service life. A8-23 EH-C of 31 Sqn, [as depicted in the photo], was based at Port Morseby.
A19-87 'R' a British supplied Mk IV was for a time was based at Bachellor in the Northern Teritory. A19-190 also a British supplied Mk XIc was also based at Port Morseby. The subjects on the Ventura sheet are also aircraft based in Port Morseby.

The AMT A20a, if your Local still has it, you should make use of the kit, to do the A20a Boston III as flown by Flt.Lt. W.E.Newton, the conversion is simple and straight forward, the so called DB-7 designation was never carried as an official classification, to the A20a Boston III. The photo showing the Boston above has been converted from the AMT P-70 Boston Nightfighter kit. Which is being built for the RAAF Officer Training School as A28-7 DU-H, this is the aircraft Newton flew on the mission for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. The aircraft A28-15 DU-Q is not the one he flew on the day he was shot down [by his own bomb blasts] and captured, it was A28-3. Not all the A20a's or even the A20c's had tropical air filter, the A20c did not have the cooling slots in the cowling ring, but retained the single exhausts.

The resin nosecone, side blisters and raft are what I market for the Boston III, the tropical cowlings, engine narcelle sides and exhausts are a REDROO conversion.

Ok, further to my last post I am going to build a Tamiya 1/48 Mk VI Mosquito as flown by Squadron Leader, DFC & Bar, DSO, Charles Scherf, RAAF when he was flying with the RCAF during WWII. Have sourced a nice set of decals for it and will be starting tomorrow. What a great way to spend a Sunday!

Just wondering, are NZ aircraft acceptable? I want to do a RNZAF A-4K skyhawk. The one I want to build was based at HMAS albatross in Nowra NSW from the 80's to 2001 so it should be acceptable right? I've always wanted to build one of these. I live in Nowra and used to go watch them at airshows all the time.

On a far more serious note, my entry for the GB will ba the CAC Avon Sabre, as for markings, not overly sure atm, have a few to choose from, just a matter of finding/making the more obscure ones, if the child and work will allow me the time.
Failing that, I'll just go with the kit decals.

Also if time permits, an F4 Phantom, or maybe a Mirage, but Sabre first, see how much time I have left over.

hey - count me in!

i'm thinking of a Tamiya 1/48 Beaufighter conversion to Mk21 RAAF, probably based in Darwin. I'll confirm this later. Ventura (?) & Aeromaster has decals for this, but I'm thinking of making my own decals or painting on originals!

I wanted a 1/48 AMT Boston in RAAF outfit for pilot Lt. Bill Newton VC, but my LHS has only the G & A model kits, and his aircraft was a DB-7B, very similar to an A-20B/C. I have heaps on construction articles and kit reviews from the web & aussie mags.

I'll tell u guys my final decision soon - I may even do both!

1 Spitfire MK V111 :A58-497 Flown by Wing Commander Robert Gibbes,deputy wing leader No 80th wing, RAAF

2 Spitfire Mk 1 [unsure of code] of 234 SQD RAF Flown by RAAF officer and 234 SQD's leading ace of the Battle of Britain Paterson Clarence Hughes KIA.

I am trying to make it happen at the moment but where 'o' where do I find the 'image icon'. I think I understand that I need to put the image icon at each end of the URL to make it display but I can't find it anywhere in Update Profile?

I think I'll join in. Don't know what I'll build yet. Maybe a RAN skyhawk or RNZAF skyhawk. By the way, does anyone know if there is any decal sets out there for RAN skyhawks? I know gekko make a set for RNZAF skyhawks but I dont know about RAN ones. I'll have to look into it but I'll give you details soon.

All going well these will also become part of the build.

They are 1/43rd kits by Model Cars Australia in Sydney (anyone know whether they still exist?) depicting the Grice/Percy 1990 Bathurst Commodore VL and the Morris/Fitzpatrick Torana L34 that won the 1976 Bathurst. Both have quite high levels of flash on the rsein but apart from that look good - we'll see.

G'day Dai,

Your Lancaster is suposed to be AJ-P 'Popsi' his aircraft was the second to bomb the Dam behind Gibson, 2 of the crew were Canadian and 1 was a Kiwi on the Dam Buster's attack.

'Mickey' Martin was renowned for his low flying abilities, within the RAF Sqn's at the time, that is why Gibson wanted him in that Squadron, his tail gunner, who was a Tasmanian, always flew with the centre perspex smashed out of the gun turret, he claimed it gave him a better field of vision.

My H.Hurricane Mk I is almost completed, I might throw either the Mk XIc or Mk XXI Beaufighter into this Group Build.

Evnin All,
I have just started my 1/72 Dambusters Lancaster AK-P flown by Mickey Martin then RAF but later an Air Comodore in the RAAF. He was Australian with an Australian crew.
Then, if I have time, convert the DH 114 Heron into either a DH(A) Drover or a Connair Riley conversion. Probably CLT.

My project is a Lighthorseman mounted figure, and hopefully my grandfathers plane he was an observer in during WW2. He was with the RAAF 13 Squadron up in Darwin, and I think he flew in Hudsons, from what I can work out from the units history. Probably is going to be a bit of a slog to find out markings etc for his actual plane, though.
Being a dedicated armour modeller it should be interesting to see how I go. I used to make planes, and they were all terrible! Disapprove [V]

OK so we want pictures of progress Question [?]

so here is the first one.

It looks barely started but the body shell is now awaiting the mat black interior which will be then masked off and the gloss exterior goat applied. The chassis is being built up but I've discovered that the interior fittings are quite different to what was raced at Bathurts so its being rebuilt. The roll cage is terrible and wrong so that also is being redone. The racing seat has been modified somewhat.

Its a Fujimi Leyton House Merc190C from the Japanese Touring Car Champs and will become Denny Hulme"s Martin Filters/Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst car.

Aussie Group Build

To offically start the Aussie group build, here are the rules.

2004 Aussie Group Build Rules

1. The group build is open to Aussies, Kiwis and adopted Aussies regardless of where they reside. Modellers may join the group build at any time providing that they believe they can complete their model by the 30 Oct 2004.

2. The model can be of any scale and is to be from one of the following classes;

a. Any military vehicle, aircraft or ship that has been or is currently in service with the Australian Forces. Must have Australian Markings.

b. Any civilian vehicle, aircraft or ship that has been or is currently in use within Australia. Must have Australian corporate or private markings. In the case of touring cars on the australian circuit, team markings will be accepted.

c. Any Fiqure providing it is of an Australian Subject.

3. The completion date for the group build is 31October 2004. Start is 10 May 2004.

4. Modellers may post photos of their model at any time, this includes progress photos. Photos of models completed after the completion may still be posted.

5. This current thread will be used for the group build.

This group build is to be all about enjoying modelling, sharing with other modellers and showing the rest of the world that modelling is alive and well in Australia. To assist with this please feel free to post photos of your model in the appropriate subject folder highlighting that it was built for the Aussie Group Build.

Also could all those taking part declare the model or models they are building in this thread or email me to let me know and I will keep an up to date list that I will post on a regular basis (this is so we don't have to go sorting though all the back pages looking for it)
