Oops, to fast on the delete button there. Sorry for that U-96. I think you did the right thing to move the pedals. Would look terrible otherwise. For me I had a new experience today when I assembled my rollcage during lunch hour Big Smile [:D] Have to speed up to keep up with your speed. Had to do some scratching cause [insert explanation of your choice] broke a piece of the cage off when cleaning it up. I took the irritating plates off that Tamiya keeps including even though they dissapeared from the real car in 2000. Cut them out with a heated X-acto and sanded the tubes of the cage to round them off. Don't look too bad and between you and me you're not going to see jack ****** of them when installed. Will make nice in-progress pics though Wink [;)]

hey joelwideqvist, you missed my Lancia from your list of rally car builds! Only the last RWD car to dominate the WRC. Tongue [:P]

Progress has been slow because we got some 1:4 scale Felis Catus recently. I was particularly impressed with my airbrush work on the tabby Big Smile [:D]

As for the Lancia037, the cockpit tub is shaping up. Conpared with the real thing the pedals are closer to the driver. I'm using figures and for the driver to touch the pedals in their proper position, he'd need to be about 8' tall. A small compromise, but it will look better if his feet are on the pedals.

Here's the real thing, and one of my source pics. Don't expect the finished product to look anything like this Dead [xx(]

Ok, so I'm on a roll here...ehhr well, painted chassis yesterday (not the engine belly) and it went on real nice. Haven't got reference pictures for the underside of the actual car so I followed instructions for the box kit. Red on the underside and silver on top.
Problems started when I went to prime the body shell. Opened a new can and started spraying, but there was something wrong with the nozzle. I think the hole was to narrow and the preassure was to low. Ended up with some sort of flat orange peal....very strange. Changed the nozzle and resprayed. Will have to look tonight how it went. Perhaps I will have to sand it down a bit and do a third layer.

Hey guys,

Murray Kish: 2001 C5-R #63 fr. Lemans

I don't have any pics uploaded to my web space yet, but I'll give you a bit of an update on my C5-R build.

I may be crazy/stupid/foolish, but I've decided to *challenge* myself with this build. There's quite a few little things I don't like about the kit, so I'm gonna take a stab at modifying/detailing it a bit. I've never jumped this deep into the fire before, so there's a good chance I might burn the toast....

But first, reference items. I've done a bit of looking around on the web and some other forums and found some good reference sites that people might be interested in. I hope the site/photo owners don't object to me posting links to a few of them:

http://www.7extrememotorsports.com/lemans/photos/corvette_c5r.htm

http://www.johnnyoconnell.com/2001.html
http://www.scaleautosport.com/porschetn.asp?racemodel=Corvette%20C5-R

Hopefully some of the other guys building C5-R's in this group will find something useful there. Note that lots of the sites/pictures are from various races and venues over the last several years. Not all of the pics are specifically of the car I'm building, but hopefully they'll give me a pretty good idea of what's what. If anyone has any other references they'd be willing to share, please add them to the list.

I'm not at my house/bench now, so I don't have my full list of things I'm planning to do, but here's a list from memory:

1. Open the hood - there's engine detail in the kit, so why not make it visible. I considered opening the rear as well, but much of the detail is visible through the rear window, so I decided not to bite off more than I could chew...
2. Lower the ride height - I did a pre-build up and I think it just sits too high - primarily in the front.
3. Various panel lines need to be filled.
4. Personally, I think the vents behind the front wheels on the sides of the car need to be bigger. So, I'm opening them up a bit. I actually think the the race car is quite a bit wider in the front than what is represented in the kit (there's some really good reference pics at http://palmeter.com/C5RWiderby3.htm). I considered widening the front fenders and then decided against it (just too much for one kit...) Opening the vents up will accomplish what I'm looking for.
5. The vents on the hood will be opened up (they're molded in the kit) and scratch louvers will be installed. Hopefully this will turn out half-a&& realistic and not ruin the whole thing...
6. Various other vents (primarily in the front air dam) will be opened up
7. I don't like the way the side window frames are molded in the kit (to my eyes, they look like armour plating (with a bunch of big rivets) rather than what would be on a race-car). They'll be shaved down and re-done.
8. Some level of wiring/plumbing detail will be added to the chassis/engine/interior. Just how far I'll go (or attempt to go) is not yet determined. We'll see how the body modifications go before I determine this.

I've already started on a few of these, and so far things aren't going too bad. I'll put a later post together with some pictures and other progress comments.

Good luck, everyone!!

Murray

Ok. Been working for about 3 days now. I have one Nascar built about 90% and another one about 40% complete. So far no problems. I feel that my skills are starting to come back to me. Still not comfortable with some of the skills, but still working on them. I will try to post some pics in a day or two. Also I need to be put down for 6 Nascar and one CR-5. Yes the Hasegawa kit. I'm doing it OOB.

I see the Aussies has a good win over the English tonight, Tri-nations starts in 3 weeks doesn't it? Should be another cracker series.

Hey Luke, I have noticed that most of the pepole on this gb is from down under. Can an American Yank get in on this action. If so you can put me down for not one but four nacsar and one Corvette CR-5 Road racer. I have been out of modeling for about 15 years. Most of my experience is in a/c, but at this time I am just fine tuning my skills again. If so and I meet the rules I would be greatful for the fun and the learning experience of this gb.

Will try to finish the chassis next week, add cf decals and start the wheels. But that's just thaughts so far.

Sad [:(] a little slow - have a bit on my plate at the moment. Basically, got the majority of plastic off the spurs so I've glued suspension, the supporting arms, done the roll-cage (that was a little tricky to get it smooth at the joints), washed the parts, and started some minor detail painting. I'm buying some paints, and practicing with some Pledge-One-Go (aka for Aussie Future).

Body of the Safari Toyota WRC painted along with many of the "bits". Wet weekend forecast so maybe a chance to start construction. But there again I have to see a man about a roll cage (1:1 for my MX5) and the wife wants to look at antique sideboards so maybe I won't be able to afford to do anything except gaze at a stack of unbuilt kits and dream.....!

I think it will work on the dash cause we're talking flat colors, the buildup is worse when it comes to wet gloss coats. The article didn't mention anything about this but I think the question is well put and something to think about. Like Proosen said, play around and find out how it fits your standard of techniques

The body of my Ferrari 250 GT from the 1959 Tour de France is now fully prepped and primed; the chassis has the dash, rear parcel shelf and seats mounted and painted. However I've discovered that the p/e that is meant to be with the kit isn't! It is an old kit I got cheaply now I know why!! However it won't really be noticeable and I have some p/e Ferrari script in the spares box so that should suffice along with some fine gauze for the front grille.

Found out that the roll cage of my Peugeot can be totally assebled before putting it on the chassis wich is good when it comes to cleaning up the parts.

I allways have high hopes when thinking of all the stuff I'll build during weekends but I seldom do that much actually. I'm more of that weekday night owl type that take the boxes out when the dog has gotten her last stroll and the misses has tucked in. Unfortunately this makes me a much slower builder than I want to be. It irritates me some times but I've gotten somewhat used to it. Half a year to finish this GB would be suffice though...

Have a happy vacation Seabee, are you hiking or even climbing?

Man, I am really enjoying this! Unfortunately, I will be less available as of this afternoon. Yep, it is a very sad day... I am going on leave! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Will be able to build some this weekend, then as of Monday my wife and I are going on a mountain trip. Man, it's going to be cold!!

Once defrosted, I will continue.

On my list for this weekend: play around with that blue tack idea for masking, maybe build up the body shell, for sure will build roll cage (allready painted) and a few of the other internal pieces. At last it might start looking like a race car of sorts...

So you can fairly say you'll be finished before the end of July Big Smile [:D]

My plans for the weekend is to go for some serious decaling and do the doors, gas tank, foot rests and perhaps the mirrors where the latter will pose for the biggest threat for my patience. Could end up like crap but that's some of the challange.

Aaah, okay! Know what it is! We call it "wondergom" - directly translated something close to "wonder(full) glue". I can see it being much easier to conform to contours, but how easy will it be to get the exact lines right? And you'll have to be carefull of paint build-up in the "corner" it will surely create, as it will be thicker that masking tape, thus not allowing the paint to travel so nicely over it. Blue tack is the stuff you use to put up posters on the wall with, a kind of "silly putty" that's tacky and quite soft. I use it to mask of aeroplanes with when I need a soft edge camoflage. It's a splendid idea to use it as a paint mask when you can't get the masking tape to snuggle down enough. I'll try it out, I love new techniques Smile [:)] just have to try everything that comes up. One thing to remeber about blue tack is that some sorts may be rather "oily" and leave a mark on flat colours that wan't come away. Try on a scrap piece before you go ahead using on the real stuff, it's no fun when things mess up Sad [:(] BTW I did put some putty on my CLK chassi to get rid of thoose ejection marks. Also put a second coat on the bodywork, bad luck struck with the paint job. Why is it that dust has to end up in places where there's no decals to be!? Very frustrating indeed, have to get me another can of TS-17 and try to hunt down the dust with some water spray before the next paint session. But all in all, it's slowly coming it's way to completion.

Sounds good... but...ehhhrrr... what is blue tack?Blush [:I] (Maybe it's just a language/cultural difference thing and I know it, but not by that name...) I use Tamiya masking tape, which really did the job thusfar for me. But if there's something better....

Read about a quite interesting masking technique yesterday, wich I will try on my dash (when I get there, mid November...) and that was to use blue tack, seemed to confirm real nice to the curved areas and the author didn't report any paint lift offs. Will definetely try that one.
