actually I am not ashamed of it, but on my first AM build (the SBD-5) I ditched it about halfway through and bought another one... the second time was easier because then I understood what the instructions meant... haha... for this one all they had was pictures in some cases with an arrow pointing to where a sub assembly was supposed to be glued. Didnt say what it was suppose to attach to exactly and and sometimes the arrow would obscure the area completely.. (of course this was also the first model I had built in some 14 yrs or so, not a smart choice for the first one)

All in all the second one came out ok... now I want to redo it at some later date and have it there for comparison... I have a few reference pages for the SBD's I used to build mine, if I can find them I will send em to you...

WOW!!! Bow [bow] looks GREAT!!! what technique you use for the highlights on the side panels? dry brush or airbrush?

It's kinda wild the diff in the SBD-3 and 5... the 5 had about twice as many instruments... had a full mid panel and a side/front panel on both sides of the pilot's legs...

Really good job chris... thinking about getting that same model like I said and you gave me a great reference!!!

tho9900, i used the drybrush tecnique.......and thanks for your compliments friend. actually, there are more panels to install, one is behind the pilots seat, which looks like some sort of radio equipment just guessing. very interesting airplane to say the least, and AM surely has done its homework on this subject. several areas of detail on this kit..........pit, engine, and dive flaps are all well molded for styrene. later.

Here's what I have on my A-1H Skyhawk so far.... complete the cockpit, arrestor hook/tail assembly and glued the fuselage sides together... will post more as I get them... also adding a F4U-1A Corsair, Tamiya 1/48 to the build.... the A-1H was ok but a little lacking, at first glance it seemed like more... I am going to switch gears and build the A-1H wings folded though. It's one nice thing the kit has. Also keep in mind this is only the 6th or so model I have done since I came back to modelling after umpteen yrs.... It's got some little spots here and there I need to work on, but overall it's coming along nice!!!

Check out the Tamiya F4U-1A kit... I got it today and it looks like a good build. PLENTY of cockpit detail, the wings can be built open or folded, flaps as well. Instructions look nice and clear... The decals may be a little plain, haven't really looked at them close. Comes with 2 figures, one is the pilot the other is flight crew who could be standing on the wing root next to the cockpit..

They have a second kit that comes with the figures and a 'moto' donkey to easily set up in a diaroma as in it's towing it... I think you'd be much more satisfied with either...

haha it's Tom... you should remember the Navy days, first day of boot camp stencilling... initials and the last 4 of your social? well I went on to HM school and when I got to Bethesda they assigned me a username to the hospital computer system same way.. except it was the first 3 of your first name and last 4 of your social.. it stuck, I've been using it for accounts since 1984...

Nice to meet you Chris, and thanks! hope to get better pics to replace those soon... the wife has my good camera at Karate camp so I had to make do...

BTW: what part of LA ya from? I have been though a coupla times... know the area a little.. been to the Czech festival in Elberta once even...

ok another one, this is the cockpit about 80% done before I stuck it in the fuselage.. again this is my wife's digital, did ok on the cockpit but maybe did it a little thick on the instrument panel... that's why I decided to do the F4U-1A as a second build for here... it's a Tamiya and has nice lines in the plastic...

Hey guys, if it's alright, count me in for the GB! It will be nice to get back up to speed since I have been away from it for a year! I picked up the Hasegawa 1/72 FA-18 Super Hornet a couple weeks ago at the local HS. I'll start on it mid month as I have been re-edjucatin' myself on a 1/72 Italeri F-32 JSF. I see the finish date is end of Dec. If there is anything for me to get in on let me know @ jonathanhc@charter.net

Also... maybe we can get some folks together and do some tomcats since they are on their way out. Maybe model one out of every wing? All you guys who can super-detail 1/72 aircraft are incredible! 1/48 has been my mainstay and I am now just trying the 1/72 and ... I'll get pics up of this italeri kit as I can. Someone might have to tell me how. But I do have a camera that can do it.

armorman welcome aboard champ, the more the merrier.......
I like the Tomcat idea but i sounds like a GB that should be done on its own Tomcats only like the Mustang GB......
You can post up the GB idea in the Aircraft forum, i imagine there's quite a few modelers here that would be interested.....BTW maybe you should start it in Jan 2005 to give us fellas a bit of time to finish our other projects.....
Cheers J.S....................

Hey guys, if those dates aren't good with you for the Tomcat build I am game for any other dates... just checking out the new Squadron Supplement and the Academy F/A-18C is priced at 69.99! Can someone tell me how to post build pics on here? I would like to post some progress pics for the Nav Av Build when I get started. Does Tamiya have a 1/32 Tomcat? Or even Academy? Talk to yall later.

By the way, thanks Julian for the welcome from sunny? Australia! I would like some of that sun since I am getting drenched by the remnants of Hurricane Frances here in North Carolina. Funny enough, it's named after my Grandmother. I also agree on the thread for the build. I'll see if I can get on that now.

best to get an account at photobucket.com then you can upload your pics to them.... then when you upload the pic, look for the [IMG etc... IMG] link, copy this to your message and we can all see it!!!

you can do it other places but this one is less restrictive as far as limits and doesn't have ads... and is FREE!!!

BTW: I think both tamiya and academy have the Tomcat, as does hasegawa,,, go to squadron.com and do a search for either f-14 or tomcat... you can find just about everyone who makes one.. as well as order if ya want... greatmodels.com is another good place to start...

Tom, You're build is looking really nice. I am excited to see the corsair when you get that going. It is a really nice kit and I am having trouble deciding if I want to do it (actually the f4u1-d or hasegawa's a4 as a top gun aggressor) Kind of leaning towards the corsair and it would be great to progress along someone doing a similar kit.

thanks tho9900 for the advice... I'll start trying the photo thing out soon. As to Squadron I went ahead and ordered the Has 1/72 F-14D Bounty Hunters for the Tomcat GB. I couldn't help myself so I grabbed the Monogram 1/48 as well.

sad news my friends... the A-1H Skyhawk is longer with us... se murĂo, it has ceased to be.... it is an ex-model.. it is now pushing up daisies.

I wanted to try to model it wings folded and as I cut into the (very) soft plastic alas I cut one of the wing guides as well... it was scored but not enough to separate from the other half of the wing... oh well I was regretting getting that kit anyway.

As previously posted, I also have a 1/48 Tamiya F4U-1A Corsair in the works with Aries resin cockpit and PE and aftermarket decals... will let yall know when they get here via FedEx...

Maybe we should hold some kind of memorial or a wake or something.....

::clearing throat:: it was a good model, not a great model... all who knew it, built it... ......................nevermind haha

Salty, I love your progress on your SBD3. I'm building the 5 in the AM GB and just mounted the wing. Kinda wish I did a little more drybrushing, I like how yours turned out better.

Another GB I may not have time for, but would like to try would be the Tomcat build. I have one 1/2 done, and found another with slight box damage on the clearance table at Walmart last night for a few bucks. These are Revell 1/72, but hey, they're still a Cat.

Tom, sorry about A-H1, maybe a dio of it being cut up at Davis Monthan?

hmmm.. that's an idea... a dio some guy at a junk yard with a cutting torch cutting it up for scrap lol...

Well I just checked and greatmodels.com STILL hasn't found the resin cockpit I ordered, or the decal set... wish I woulda ordered from Squadron even though they were a few dollars more expensive. I usually don't have to wait for them...

I'm going to have to go buy a model to keep myself occupied... This waiting is for the birds!!!
