So, the Hobbycraft box mentions the "detailed cockpit" of this kit. Well, here's the detailed instrument panel:

Fancy, huh?

So, here's what I did, using some bits from a Eduard PE fret for a Mosquito I had laying around unused, some scraps of styrene sheet and aluminum. Unpainted:

Then, I added the MFD screens cut from film negative and then I painted it with Tamiya green black and attempted to drybrush with some olive drab to pick out details. Finished:

Now I just need to add a little future for the glass in the gauges.

Nice job, John! Does anyone know of an AM that makes a seat for this bird in 1/72? I don't have my Detail & Scale book yet so I'm unsure if it's a MB zero-zero seat or what. - Calvin

Very nice indeed John! That looks better than my F-35B's panel! (But what was wrong with the original kit piece? Big Smile [:D])

Calvin
The A-10 currently flies with the ACES II seat (standard USAF seat). For a short while waaaaay back in the prototype and early production stage, it used the ESCAPAC seat. But since this is a "what if", fell free to drop in any kind of seat you want!

1/72 ACES II
- Aires makes a resin 2-pack w/photoetched parts (ae7051, approx $8 - $11)
- Verlinden also has a resin 2-pack with photoetched detail parts (vp0226, $7 - $8)

Check out greatmodels.com or squadron's website for AM seats.

Nice, very nice instrument panel, LJ.. Afraid mine won't look anything that good. In fact, there won't be one to be seen..!

What have I done?!
I just got my Trumpeter A-10 N/AW from the mailman. I'm a tad overwhelmed right now. WOW!.... I'll say it again... WOW! It is friggin HUGE! Yes, the detail around the office is a bit soft, but SO WHAT?! Now i need to figure out exactly how many Hellfires I can hang on this thing! oooh, and rockets... its gotta have rockets!

Well, how many hard points are there on an A-10? Then multiply it by 4...Yeah, that would be what scientists call a "metric butt-load" of hellfires on the racks.

This one is 1/32 scale, right Cobrahistorian?

Yep, 1/32 and all Hog!
Now here's a question. Hellfires AND Mavericks?
I'm thinking rocket pods outboard and missiles inboard. There are 11 pylons.
From outboard to inboard:

M260 7-shot rocket pod
Quad Hellfire rack
Triple Maverick rack
M261 19 shot pod
centerline free and mirrored on the other side.

Doesn't need Sidewinders cuz the Hellfire's got some Air to Air capability. Doesn't really need a jammer pod. I'm wondering if it could actually carry all of that ordnance.... Too cool!

"It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut!"

I know Hellfire are relatively light; how much do Mavericks weigh and how much can the Hog carry?

WHO CARES!!!! Sounds like a great load-out; can't wait to see it.

Honestly, I think it probably could carry it all. 4 Hellfires and the launcher weigh less than a 500lb bomb. ALL of the A-10s hardpoints can carry a 500lb bomb.

Plus, now that Trigger and I have solved the FLIR and Laser designator issues, this is gonna be REALLY cool!

I just sanded and de-flashed the forward fuselage halves. Gonna have to start on the cockpit soon. By the way, here's a shot of the new A-10C cockpit.

Lets back up a second. With 11 hardpoints capable of carrying 4 Hellfires, an A-10 could theoretically carry 44 missiles? There are how many tanks in a battalion?

Thanks for the cockpit photo. Guess mine is more "what if" than the C version, so maybe I'll make mine the M variant or something. Oh, well, that's fine with me.

Think there'd be a problem if I hung AMRAAMs on the outer pylons instead of SIdewinders? I've got a few spare AMRAAMs in the parts box gathering dust.

The Hog would need some way of either designating a target or getting a data link from a radar provider for the AIM-120.

"A-10M+" ?

BTW - I've got two 1/48 Stinger tubes from my RAH-66 that I would be happy to loan out to the Marine Corps to test out on their new CAS platform if they should decide to do so!

I've decided that my version is going to be the A-10W. Yeah, the "Whiskey Hog."
And I"ll take you up on the offer of stinger tubes. Should I email you with my snail mail address?

A "Whiskey Hog"; I like the sound of that! There's your nose art - a drunken Porky Pig with a bottle of JD! Fire off an e-mail to me and I'll get those Stingers out post-haste.

Stingers.... you had to say Stingers.... Maybe I'll forego one of the 7-shot pods and rig it with the twin Stingers I have....

LJ, you could always hang a radome on the wing like an F4U-5N! There's your designator for the AMRAAMs!

I think my nose art will be a little more racy than Porky, but I'm glad you like the Whiskey Hog designation, Trigger.

Cobrahistorian, you had to give me another idea to debate in my mind! But I think if I put the stinger pods on one outboard pylon and hang a jammer on the other side, that'll give me what I want, some self defense, not to mix it up with the "air superiority" boys. In a CAS role I guess she'll just have to rely on the CAP of USMC F-18s for top cover.

Porky was just the PC idea that I could post on a family-friendly forum!

Jon - awesome idea for a wing-mounted radar like a Corsair. Hawg's even got a bent-wing!

Did you know they're considering a wing-mounted longbow radar for the AH-1Z? Looks kinda dumb, but hey. if it works!...

Well, I got the fuselage halves together, so I'm making progress. This kit has some issues (Hobbycraft). It has both raised and engraved lines, it almost looks like two molds were grafted together to make this kit. The engraving ends just in front on the wing root. Fit is an issue, too. Nothing terrible (yet), just a little more sanding, which means I'm going to have to try and re-scribe the lost detail. No biggie, good practice and all that. I just didn't feel like shelling out the $30+ US for the Tamiya A-10.

Complaining over. I'm still psyched to get this bad boy assembled and painted. It's actually been pretty enjoyable, making my own details for the pit and thinking up the other changes I'll be making.

Oh, I found some possiblities for nose art, too. Shame I can't post most of them here. HA HA.

Man....This kit is daunting.
I've gotten the interior of the forward fuselage painted a nice shade of NVG-compatible flat black. Neither of the main panels comes with any detail, so I'm gonna have to add it all. Shouldn't be too difficult.

I'll let you know, or I could email a couple of possibilities. Now I've got to figure out how to get the whiskey bottle in the same image. Photshop is kicking my tail.

Cobrahistorian, I can't imagine trying something that size, and having to scratch details as well. Good luck on that. Heck, I'm scratching my head about some of the things with this kit I'm working.

LemonJello -
I can help you out with that Photoshop problem. I've been using it almost every day for 10 years now if you want to e-mail me the file(s).

Got the stingers, thanks again, Trigger, and I must have lost my mind because I started cutting the rudders to pose them and the elevons (is that the right term?) too. Planning on doing the same with the wing ailerons. What have I gotten myself into?

About time the flyboys updated one of the most versitile and proven airframes they've got, instead of going after multi-billion dollar projects. Now how do we get the Corps to buy some?
