"What If" A-10 Group Build Idea
Posted by Trigger on Saturday, September 25, 2004 11:11 AM
Hey, I had an idea for a group build yesterday. Have you ever asked yourself, "I wonder how the Israeli Air Force would modify it's A-10s if they flew them? What would a Marine Corps Hog be like? A USFS firebomber? What would existing A-10s be like if the Air Force gave them an improved avionics budget?

If you've pondered those or similar questions, then how about a "What If" A-10 Group Build. Alternate color schemes, foreign use that never happened, but keep it plausible (No Starfleet, Macross, etc). Your configuration can take place from any time within the A-10s service life, from prototype to retirement.

Anyone interested?

Been wanting to build a A-10 for a while... The idea is interesting... Maybe a Blue Angels' Warthog..??!

No seriously, if it's not starting too soon (ie not before 2005) count me in.

I think a A-10 in splinter Swedish camo would look good! (here I go again!)

Hmmm, a Hog in the USMC CAS mission? If there was a way to make them capable of flight ops from a "big-deck" amphib... I think I'm starting to get interested in this one. I'll keep my eye out for a kit, just in case.
A day in the Corps is like a day on the farm; every meal is a banquet, every paycheck a fortune, every formation a parade... The Marine Corps is a department of the Navy? Yeah...The Men's Department.

I'd like in as well but it would have to be sometime after the 1st of the new year. I'd like to do a Navy A-10N or an RAF A-10

Stir not the bitterness in the cup I have mixed for myself!

Oh yeah, I wouldn't want this to start before 1/05. Between other projects going on and the silly season around the corner; plus, it allows everyone time to plan their Hogs. How long should the build run - does four months sound good?

Let's say, any Hog kit in any scale, you can use any aftermarket parts and decals you need (resin, photoetched, kitbash, scratchbuild, etc.). I'm going to try to find a good set of plan drawings to post so everyone can design their respective color schemes and markings. Would it be bad forum protocol if I posted this GB suggestion on the A/C board to drum up some interest?

"A-10N?", "Thunderbolt GR.1?," USMC CAS A-10?," Swedish Camo? Outstanding! All of these Hog suggestions you guys have put forth so far sound really cool!

Yeah, I'll have to see what the optempo has in store, but this sounds pretty cool. I'm torn between a USMC marked Hog in the CAS role, or maybe one loaded with harpoons in the anti-shipping strike role...either way, it'll make for an unusual build.

I hope you can make it too LemonJello; more importantly that you guys get some "down time."

Here's that line drawing I promised to help with anyone's color scheme planning. And yes, it came from Don Color site and was "sanitized". If you'd prefer a layered Photoshop file, just e-mail me and I'll send you a .psd (my .mac server only likes to post flattened .jpgs or .gifs)

Well I am already building an A-10 Firehog fire bomber for the paper and prototypes build but sounds fun, the A-10 is one of my favorites so I'll be watching. Good luck.

I went ahead and picked up my Hog yesterday - Revellogram's 1/48 re-release; and I've been messing with that multiview drawing, experimenting with color schemes trying to figure out what I'm going to do build

Welcome aboard 9x19mm!

And djmodels, Dragon/DML has a couple of 1/144 Hawg kits.

DR4548 is an A-10A of the 74th TFS/388 TFW and DR4549 is an A-10A from the 917th TFW in the "Peanut" scheme. They're both $3.35 from www.greatmodels.com

Thanks for that Trigger. I was wondering 'cause I could not see any at Hannants... But I've found one now from Kingkit, a LS box that Dragon re-issued later!

So, Count me in this one!

Welcome aboard DJ! Are you still thinking of the Swedish Hog? (I didn't "recognize" you before with your new signature pic)

And fighterguru, believe me, I totally understand about being swamped. I'm not opposed to extending the timeline on this or even treating it like the Aerobatic Team GB - open ended. I get enough deadlines at work myself, and after all - this hobby is supposed to be fun!

There seems to be a lot of interest in the A-10 out there - maybe we can combine the builds? Those who want to do a "real" Hog and those that want to do a "what-if?"

How does that sound to everyone?

Matt
I feel your pain buddy. Day job keeps me busy and I've been working on freelance projects every night and weekends for the past two weeks and those aren't going away anytime soon.

I'm in the S-70 GB right now and I haven't worked on that in a month (In fact, pretty much everyone over there is about a month behind; Avus even had to back out of that and all the other GBs he was in because he had to work on his house). I've got this build around the corner, and I don't even know what type of Hawg I'm going to build yet. I've got a bunch of decal sheets to start working on after the New Year as well as the Aerobatic Team GB I'm thinking about. And that doesn't include my stack of non-GB kits in various stages of construction. At best, I get 30-45 minutes of build time in a week.

The Aerobatic GB is where I got the idea about open-ended timeline. We'll kick-off after the New Year and one can come and go as they please. Trust me, I know about deadlines all too well, I get enough of them at work and that's a stress I'd rather not inflict on one of my hobbies. It's not a race, it's about having fun. I've seen interest in this build nearly double in the past 24 hours and there will be more people who come on board after it starts. We'll still be here come summertime and I hope you'll participate, but I understand if you can't.

If this ends up being an open-ended GB then I might like to get in on this. By Jan I should have a couple out of the way. Thinking of a Republic of Korea Air Force A-10A.

Cool [8D]Well, I don't have any decals for the ROK AF. But I do have a great sheet of Mexican AF stencils from Aztec! Or, since my girlfriend is from Peru, how bout a A-10P to go with my Peru Army Mi-24 Hind! Big Smile [:D]

I think it was in an FSM mag were I was an A-10 done up in FL highway patrol markings... would that fit the spirit of this build? :) Maybe one done up like LAPD's swat tank? :)

You know if Law Enforcement started using A-10's to go after drug dealers AND the producers I think you see less dealers on the street :)

An LAPD SWAT-Hog - that's frightening on so many levels. I have to admit, at first I thought, "Nah, that's really not very plausible." but the more I got to thinking about it, if there's a good back-story/explination behind it, why not? It's exploring the boundaries, but it's still not SciFi. Besides, LAPD already has APCs...

This could be really interesting. I've heard some really great suggestions out there from you guys; now if I can settle on a Hog myself, I'l be all set...
