I do have a Cobra pic for Cobrahistorian that I took at Camp Maybry in Austin. Here's the progress of my Firehog up to this point.Almost finished.

Your Firehog is looking real good, eddie, real good indeed. That will be an eye catching scheme for sure. I installed the office last night, more fit problems there, of course, but its getting closer to completion. Now I've got to get the gaps at the wing root taken care of, where did I put that putty?

Hey guys, I was getting bored waiting for some paint to dry on other projects last night, so I decided to start some tinkering on my AMT/Ertl A-10. I assembled all of the ordnance, and am wondering if anyone here knows of good references that will show me how to paint them. (With all the ordnance that will hang under this thing, it probably would qualify for a 'what if', heh.) Anyways, it will have 6 Mavericks, 2 Rockeye CBUs, and a dozen Mk-82 snake eyes. This would be a mid- to late-80s plane in Euro I camo. The instructions say the Mavs and Rockeyes should be white, just wondering if that's accurate or if I have any other options. Also, how should the tail-ends of the Mk-82s be painted. Thanks for any input.

That's for the comps on the Firehog. I must say the office of your Hog is quite empressive to me. I know that several items can be used to make the seat harnesses. What are yours? Also the scale.

Sorry no tail code. I took those photos on the sly, as the civvie gate guard said that photography on base would probably be frowned upon, so it was shoot'n'scoot. I know it's a bit dark,but here's the head on shot.

eddie, the scale is 1/48 and I just used regular masking tape for the harnesses, then I took small wire and bent it into d rings and took some liberties with gizmology to make a few details to add. The buckle is a couple of leftover PE pieces that I thought looked like a 4 point harness lock/buckle.

My Hasegawa weapons set shows the CBUs as painted OD, but I've seen the white color more prevalent.

If my paint scheme looks familiar, It's because your page of ideas was sent to me before I knew about this build group from a friend who I had mentioned to what I was doing. I also read what you said about "defanging" the Firehog, but is there really an A-10 without the cannon? Big Smile [:D]

I think I mentioned before, in my world,incendiary shells would be used to start back burns. What I wanted to say was thanks for the paint idea. It's working out well for me.

Pretty cool, Eddie! BTW, I recently left Atsugi where VA-115 was for a while. Even got some Superscale decals for a 1/72 bird that's on the "to do" list. LOL Were you with them? I know an AT1 James that used to be with them as an AQ. Also a (now) Senior Chief Eakins, who was my AVARM Division Chief for a while. - Calvin

Glad I could help out, and your Firehog's looking really good! That's a sweet tank underneath. I don't remember exactly what I said about defanging the Hog, but it was probably something along the lines of questining why a civilian A-10 would need a cannon and "I just couldn't bring myself to do that to an A-10!" (I agree it just isn't the same without that cannon - "Ugly, but well hung" as the patch says!)

Although, now that I think about it, removing the gun and ammo drum would free up more room for either fuel or fire retardant...

That's a sharp paint job, Eddie, everything is looking good! I'm most impressed with your speed brakes, that's a nice job you've done there.

I agree on it just not being "right" for an A-10 NOT to have a gun, heck I think I was considering a way to put a couple more, smaller versions in gun pods on the hard points when this GB started. But, with all I'm trying on this build, I think I'll just hang some bombs and not push my luck any more than I have.

I wish I could take credit for the speed brakes,but it came with a two sets. one open,one closed. I couldn't get rid of the cannon, but that presents a problem. On the Firehog site, they have FLIR under the chin. Since there's no room, I've fashioned a "low profile" FLIR to mount on top of the nose. LemonJello just gave me an idea. If I can find an old FLIR,I might try to hang it under the wing.
I was ship's company,V-1,Crash&Salvage while on board the Midway from87-89..I've included a pic of the SSWFGD"back in the day" Sorry,I don't think I knew those people.

I've got a similar dillemma with my TRAM-type turret that I'm adding to my USMC hog. I can't put it in the nose, so I'm putting it centerline, just a little bit back from the front gear well. I'm actually using part of a AN/AAQ-14 from one of my Hasegawa weapons sets for the TRAM, I'll try to add some photos later today.

Ah, see I went a different route. I moved the Pave Penny pylon (say that three times fast!) back and added a second pylon on the other side which holds the FLIR. That way I didn't have to frankenstein in a TADS/PNVS turret above the cannon.

Right now, the empennage is complete and looking good. I need to add the RWRs, etc, but overall it is coming together nicely. I do need to start working on the cockpit and scratchbuilding the instruments. That's gonna be fun. Once I get the fuselage together, things should go quickly.

That's a real nice looking Firehog you've got there buddy. A striking scheme and the black walkways area nice touch.

Photos with the Group Build on them, are you referring to our badges? If so, then that graphic that looks like a squadron patch in some of our signatures (see below) is the GB badge.

Great job, eddie! And congrats on being the first one done, too!

My update: Been cleaning up the landing gear, scraping seams, etc, but that's about it. Rifle range is causing early mornings and early bedtimes as a result not much is getting done. But I'm in the home stretch, just have to finally decide on a paint scheme. I think that's harder than any of the other undertakings in this project!

Thanks everyone. I tried a FSM reader tip and used 600grit sandpaper for the walkways and it works pretty good. Definitely has the feel. After Cobrahistorian asked what came out of the cannon, I had two thoughts. One, the other use for the cannon could be to clear firebreaks.Just a few shells and Voila! Two,if you could hook up a water cannon,the best way to use it is with a VSOL Hog. Maybe put the engines on a hinge with a hydraulic actuator and a couple of Harrier nozzles up front? I'll save that Idea for next time around. Big Smile [:D]

Trigger, haven't had a chance to check my email, been out of the office and out on the range (again) this week. I've been slacking in getting those measurements to you, but I will, I promise. Again, thanks for all your help so far, too, if I haven't thanked you already.

Unfortunately, not much progress to report, 4am comes way too early, so I've been hitting the rack without much time to model. But, shooting is one of the fun things we get to do in the Green Machine.

Hey guys, is it too late to join in!?

When I saw this in january I thougth that it would be great but I didn´t have the time. Now I got laid off Boohoo [BH]

so two weeks from now I got nothing to do all days long besides writing job applications.

The first thing I thaught of was to do it with Swedish markings and the splinter cammo. Was I suprised when I saw the same ideea in the first responce to the topic. Great to see I´m not the only one with this crazy ideea!

I have some swedish manufactured air-to-ground missiles left from Viggen and Gripen kits, that would be a nice touch, I don´t think any other country uses them.

It would be nice to participate, let me know and I´ll go and buy a kit on pay-day

Welcome aboard Johan! Sorry to hear about the J-O-B, buddy. That happened to me two weeks before this past Christmas so I know how much that sucks. You'll find something new and better in no time! The build's timeline is open-ended, so if you don't feel comfortable buying modeling stuff right now, that's cool. Hop on board whenever you like! I'm really looking forward to seeing a splintered Hog!

You'd catch up, alright, since I'd be blind AND crazy trying for MARPAT. I've seriously been thinking of going with a WWII-style blues over white like the Corsair, but then what would I do with the sheet of low-vis stencils I bought. I do have the Vietnam era VMFA-333 Fighting Shamrocks decals that are going on this one, but I'll think about the MARPAT, and then I'll sober up and realize that it just ain't happening.
