Carl I totally agree with you about the one month extension as hopefully by then the canopy for the mosquito should have arrived from England.

Sean , would you beleive that I visited the museum on base here in Bandiana and took a heap of detailed shots of the Sioux that they have here? Over 50 photos of a Sioux in very good condition.

The instrument panel is actually made up of several sections of styrene, painted matt black.
The detail on these is mostly the clear film from unused a/m kits, and some PE bits thrown in for good measure.

The clear film was painted black on one side.
After drying I scratched dial detail into them, and backed it with white or interior green colours, then glued it to the styrene sections.

Easier to do than explain.

Wonderful result Sean - that's some test of patience. How did you build the Inst. Panel? I'm still stuck w. the B-25 on the IP, I've done the wings, tailplanes, engines etc but can't close it up. I can't imagine doing the dials on the IP by hand. Thought of buying a 2nd kit as they (should) come w. two alternate IP decals (a front & behind option) but I'm loathe to give those pricks more of my money after they've continually ignored my emails asking for the missing part.

I'm proposing a one-month extension to the close date as there seem to be a few of us lagging behind you boy scouts.

Thanks Tom.
Actually I found 3 sets of the RAN decals. Great set too, has 1/72, 1/32 & 1/48 Roo decals on each sheet.
Should cover me for a while!!!

And I had a chat to Kremps, we came to the mutual understanding that my recent build did me no favours, and electroshock was the best thing for meDisapprove [V]

It's ok though, she promised to be gentle!
Instead of several treatments like she usually gives us, I'll get one decent one.

She said it was to speed things up a bit, so I guess it's safeConfused [%-)]
After all, she IS a trained professional right........................right??

Sean - good God man!!! that's fantastic!!! Kremps says thats your last one though... she said this time she means it. She noticed Doctor Thistlewaite had to up your meds 5 times during this one... She's pushing for electroshock therapy for you... Evil [}:)] And I noticed she was out warming up the truck this morning, something about making sure the battery was charged! [:0]

Seriously... AWESOME build! I am humbled by seeing workmanship like that. I was just gloating over my meager conversions on the Martlet in the N.Africa build and came here and saw THIS!!! You ought to enter this one!! BTW: love the decal, glad you finally found one!!!

Sadly I petered out on this build but next yr it will be a priority!

Thanks guys.
I have missed a few details, which I didn't discover until too late in the build stage, but these things happen.

Might try and find another one like pingy suggested.

That looks awesome Sean. All that extra effort was worth it. Now you need to build one straight from the box so we can see where you added all that detail.Wink [;)] Great work.Thumbs Up [tup]

And after all the effort, this is the end result.

The tail plane was entirely built from scratch, and control cables added and run to the c/p.
Basically all the main kit parts were either rebuilt, or adapted.
The 2 fuel tanks were entirely built from auto filler and styrene.

Cant wait for the next Aussie GB!!!!!!
Might scratchbuild a stick!!!!

Bracing on the rear of the cockpit.

Filter can built from scratch.

Replacing the OEM drive shaft with metal.

Scratchbuilt I/P

Modified engine ass'y

FINISHED!!!!!
Big Smile [:D]Party [party]Party [party]

Well, minus 2 fuel rails, they are taking a while to cure, Tamiya epoxy doesn't like curing in cold weather.
But other than that, she is done, and will put some pics together tomorrowSmile [:)]

I can't express how glad I am that I didn't throw this thing against a wall!
My own fault for taking a bigger bite than my meager mouth can handle.

Till tomorrow

Glad to hear the Bell is almost done Sean, I'm looking forward to checking out some photos of all the work you've put in.

Daniel the build is supposed to finish at the end of June, but there is no way I'm going to meet the date. My goal is to finish and be free of this build by the end of next week, because I have a Midway Wildcat and a Nth African 109 to get moving on.
Oh and the camo on the Buffalo was done with blu tack but heavily touched up afterwards free hand.

Cheers

Well D-Day for the Bell.
Should have it finished tonight sometime.

If not, it will be the first time I've missed a completion date, but I really don't think Tom will send Kremps round for such a small violation........................I hope....

That looks really good Darren. Did you freehand that camo job or mask it? Great work.Thumbs Up [tup]

BTW, How much time is left in this GB? I've got a P-40N that I'm going to do in 78sqn RAAF colours. I'm also entering it in the P-40 GB, but thought I might enter it in this one too if I could get it finished in time.

Well it's no world beater, but the painting, shading and re-touching are done on the Buffalo. I'll let it cure for a couple of days now before I Future it, but the next thing will be to add undercarriage.

Good to see you're still there Dave.

Cheers

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat

I was spraying the last little touchup on the underside of the Buffalo tonight and was finishing up and admiring my handiwork when I noticed the lovely overspray that is now all over the lower part of the starboard side of the fuselage Disapprove [V] Sad [:(]

Well this leaves me with at least another nights worth of touchups till its done Angry [:(!]

Hey Sean good luck with the comp and are we two the only ones left in this build or what!!!

Cheers

Aside from a little touch up work the paint job on the Buffalo is done at last. I will put the kit aside for 48 hours now and let the paint cure before I Future it and then the decals.
If I get the energy up I'll post a small pic tonight.
Phew, almost there.

Sean, so what are you entering in this year's show?

Cheers

Just our local annual show, nothing spectacular.
Have taken first place in air and land craft for the last 3 years, hopefully this year someone else will get first.
I like winning, but winning all the time gets boring after a while.

Well I made some good progress on the weekend, I managed to post-shade all the panel lines (followed by a repainting of the port wing due to a little accident Big Smile [:D]). Then I post- shaded the medium green by adding 30% yellow to the green to lighten it up. I sort of ran out of energy last night, so tonight I'll post-shade the dark earth tonight then blend the colors together with a (very) thin base color overspray. I probably won't make the date, but I'll get close.

Sean, it's good to hear the Bell is coming together Thumbs Up [tup]. BTW, what competition were you entering your models in?

Cheers

Well, I got my decals today Big Smile [:D], and they look fantastic!Approve [^]

Been so busy this weekend, moving stuff for family, and only just managed to get my models to the show for entry by the skin of my teeth!

Also managed to mount the fuel tanks on the Bell, but need to ad-lib some support, just to be safe.
After that has cured, I'll finish the fuel lines and remove the masking, then place the decals and brush on the flat coat, and she'll be as finished as I can be driven to do.

There are still a couple of things I forgot to add, and it's to late now, but if I keep going with this, not only will I not finish in time, I'll most likely bin it.
After 3 months, I've had a gutful and need something fresh to build.

I have no idea how these scratchbuild guys spend so much time doing what they do, cause I sure don't have the drive they've got!

Well I thought I had better post a couple of progress shots before this build actually finishes, so here are a couple of shots of the Buffalo

[:0] OMG the kit has been attacked by grey worm things

That's better, now it's actually starting to resemble something.

The colors specified in the Aussie Decals are RAF Dark Earth and Medium Green over 50/50 Black & Light Grey. But I must admit the green does look a little odd to me, Oh well too late now. Overall it still needs a fair amount of work, but things are stating to come together at last.

You can also buy the booklet from Red Roo (Gary Byk is the author in both cases), much the same duscussion. Booklet is called "Understanding RAAF Aircraft Colours" which has some 'real point' chips included, although not scaled.
