OK, well, assembly of the tractor (less wheels/tracks) took around an hour. No real problems, except the seat seems to sit (excuse the pun) badly. Putting some more pressure on it to sit better resulted in the spike poking up! A liberal dosage of glue, and patience, and it now seems OK. Other than that, no problems, although 4 hands for assembling the rear section is useful. Now for a final sanding down (I seem to have missed a few bits here and there), then ready for the paint shop. Hannants recommended (and it seems right) Humbrol 94, a sort of browny yellow. Of course, I should have done this, this morning, but somehow the day zipped past, so only started at 8pm! Later, some MIG pigments (rust and dust), plus some chipping to be added, and a burnt umber wash. Pictures too I hope! All ready too for the main build, the Komet. Not started anything, but at midnight...

OK, this is what I have in mind. Me-163B V-21, as piloted by Rudy Opitz on 20, 30 and 31 July 1943 from Peenemunde. The aircraft is light grey overall, with no markings other than the national insignas and the little V21 'stencils' on the fin.

My task is made a touch more complicated by the fact that I want to represent the aircraft taking off. I've got to find a pilot, modify it a little (because Opitz wore a camera strapped onto his forehead!), and find a decent way to represent the exhaust flame and the white smoke coming off the bottom of the fuselage. As far as the kit itself is concerned, there's little changes from the 'basic' Academy kit: a new set of vents on the tail, canon tubes protruding from the wing/fuselage and removal of the 'later' type of pitot. I'll try to give a better look to the landing skid's shock absorber bits.

We shall see!

Well, it's just past midnight here, so time to start! The tractor is almost finished, except weathering and wheels...yep, one of them decided to make a break for freedom, and is behind the computer somewhere...

Not sure what seat belts, if any, the Komet had. Any good websites with pictures?

Well, just under 5 hours to go for me.

I just couldn't let osher do his Mad Komet tractor day all by himself though so while I was out running errands today I picked up Academy's kit and started on the tractorBig Smile [:D]. Am I pathetic or what!!!! Ashamed [*^_^*] It is all put together and painted (the tractor that is) except the tires and tracks. I went with a dark grey colour because I didn't have an appropriate yellow.

It's a great looking kit and I am now wondering if its possible to do two kits in one day???Shock [:O]Shock [:O]Shock [:O] (someone did two kits for Mad allied day)

First repport before the first break, as I need the glue to dry before attempting any filing/filling in with putty...

Here's my 'start' picture....

And here are the main sub-assemblies glued together. I'll paint and detail the cockpit later...

So far no problem to report. I'm a bit confused though by what one can see through the side windows... Even the box art shows some details that are not in the kit... May have to research that a bit more. Those box art details are on the Airfix and Heller kits... Why not here??!

About 6 ½ hours before the start time for me. I did make it thru the ice to the LHS and got my paints and some square styrene for the stand. Also made a quick stop at Lowe's Home Improvement Store for a tile that I will use as a base.

Here is the J8M1 I am going to try and reproduce,

Thanks for joining me on Mad Komet Tractor Day! Like you, I completed and painted the model, except the wheels. Of course, I'm now missing a wheel (I'll need to move the computer to find it). In reality, I wouldn't mind stripping the tractor, and repainting it, as I botched the paint job. I'd changed the settings on my airbrush and compressor, and forgot I did so... Really, I should have tested it first on scrap, but I didn't, and result was the paint went on with too much pressure, and too close to the airbrush. This meant that the paint shifted (I think possibly a bit too thin too, but that should not be a problem) after application, due to being blown into corners. This certainly makes the tractor cry out for weathering! At least the settings are now correct for the Komet.

Speaking of the Komet, the clear parts are in Future/Klear, and the cockpit is being cleaned up for assembly and painting.

This is what I mean:

There's no 'see through' effect through the side windows (from one side window to the other)... The Academy kit features a see through...

Yep, good luck on the J8M1 Dave! A brave man!

Thanks for the offer of the wheel or tractor, but I think I'll find the wheel somewhere, and it's a good excuse to clean behind the computer (usually the one place in the house that really needs it!). I'm determined now to make the tractor I built into something nice. Just needs work, patience, and, delicate fingers.

Oh, that website is brilliant! Now I know where part D3 goes, and what colour to paint the footpedals (brown). Thank-you. Right, it's 2am here, so recommence tomorrow.

wow some progress as i wipe the sleep from my eyes after my nap. i can tell you this that there will not be much detail on the interior of my build. i plan on just using what the kit has, no added wires, no added belts. the exterior will need the most time so i dont want to get bogged down in the beginning. i look forward to the beginning. only six hours to go.

Report from Japan: All has not gone well! My example seems to have been mis-molded or something. There is a large gap between the wing/bottom fuselage & the top parts! And the exhaust doesn't line up at all! A considerable amount of filler had to be used. About to paint the exterior. I wish I had thought about setting up my MSN and/or Yahoo chat. Maybe for 35 in 48 weekend! - Calvin

Aw shucks!!!! I had to go and open my big mouth and insert my size 11 foot. There is no way I am going to be able to do the Academy kit as well as the Huma. Shoulda looked a little closer at the Huma before I started braggin'!! Ashamed [*^_^*] I knew the Huma was a short run kit but it looked pretty good on the sprue, and there is only 30 or so parts, how hard could it be right?? Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V] I'm an hour and a half in and I finally glued the 5 parts that make up the pit and thats without scratch building a new control stick which is what I really should do. At this rate I'll be lucky to get the 263 done never mind the 163. Oh well... live and learn. Reality bites!!! Sad [:(]

It's 12:00 AM on the West Coast. Don't really know how far I'll go tonight. Start cleaning the parts and then the big push in the morning after a few hours sleep.

I'm back ! Have to drive the Mrs to work, and will need to find the time to prepare supper and repare the bed (don't ask!), but all in all, it should be OK.

Joe, likewise I'll will not be adding much in the tub, mostly because the pilot will hide quite a bit of it.

Calvin, sorry to hear about that. I've just done some dry-fitting of the main bits and mine seems really good in terms of fit. Wonder if anyone else has experience of that Condor kit..?

Dave, the Academy kit will be for another time, not to worry!

Dan, how's that MPM kit?

Lots of clean up needed on the styrene parts. I've got some craving, filing and sanding ahead of me. It's going to need a lot of gap filling super glue. A quick dry fit and it doesn't look so good. I don't know how well the resin tub's going to fit in the upper fuselage. Good thing there's not a lot of parts to this airplane.

I'm off to bed for a few hours sleep.

Calvin, I think we're in the same boat with the fit of our kits. Will see how this thing goes together later today.
