Jules --- how long can you go on using the same tired excuse??? the batteries are charging???? Wink [;)] just kidding, I got caught in the same problem not too long ago...

I agree on the engines not being seen, but for me I continue to try to get the most out of them because like the cockpit, *I* know what they look like on the inside... Nevermind the exteriors of mine are only slowly getting better, the parts you can't see look fabulous!! Wink [;)]

I think I am going to scratch the Zero I started for this build and do another one... as this seems to be an endless GB we have plenty of time.. I might get the Hasegawa or the Tamiya 1/32 one for the next one... I saw one on sale in squadrons monthly sale paper today...

oh... and I agree on the amount of new GB's lately...... "WWII anything group build" or "Build an old aircraft GB" is kinda vague to me... I am about to drop a couple I got into as I am learning that building on my own is fun too.. I might just stick to building with the usual suspects...

Amen Tom, I'll be sticking with the "Usual Suspects" as well, I think the Battle of Germany GB and the Battle of the Atlantic GB as well as Grumman cats Gb and Midway will be it for me in 2006, the other Gb's seem a little Vague or just plain silly like The GB badge GB where you glue 2 pieces of plastic together and get a badge, to me that seems to defeat the purpose of actually being in a Gb because your not sharing a build with fellow members which IMHO is the reason for participating in a group build......I wonder what "Kremps" would think..........Anyway just myMy 2 cents [2c]
BTW seein as how Midway will be going on through 2006 and considering Pingy is starting another build i think i'll finish the AM Avenger for this build as well as the ZeroThumbs Up [tup]

Wot... This GB continuing on into 2006? Must have missed something? Confused [%-)]

I'll have to see if I can sneak another build in here somewhere but with the Canadian GB and three lined up for the Battle for Germany it'l be tough.

So... your batteries charged up yet Jules?

I agree on the too many GB's thing lads. There are too many people out there just trying to start GB's for the sake of it. I reckon alot of them buy a kit and think "I'll start a GB for my kit". I like the builds like this one that centre around a particular battle or aircraft type. But the WW2 aircraft GB and WW2 armor GB are just silly IMO. Half of the GB ideas that are put up here don't even get any people in, they just push the "good" builds onto lower pages. My 2 cents [2c]

I'm just about finished my King Tiger (just have to find that part that I lost so I can finish it), so I might make a start on the Devastator soon. I've done a fair bit of the re-scribing on the right fuselage.

i like this gb the japanese aircraft and the A-10 build im in but i guess my mirror / mirror idea didn't go over well i only have 2 positive joins an 2 possibles so i guess it's one of the ones that should go to the wayside Sad [:(] I like the what if format but i guess it's not all that popular . on a higher note my buffalo is all buttoned up and it didn't take much cleanup on the seams i'll be going to paint soon once i have what i need masked ready

Panzer - actually yours was original, I really thought of what would the Wildcat look like in IJN green with a blueblack cowl when I saw your GB, the Thunderbolt would be even better... it would remind me somewhat of a Frank or something I think...... I wouldn't give up... it took me about a month to get more than just the usual slobs suspects into this one.. I think all of us are getting into the hard parts of several GB's right now and don't have the energy to post much anywhere else...

That said, a build like this is unusual, most people want a firm end date for the build but this one seems to be flowing along and still attracting the occasional new person. I imagine at some point it will end... I just hate to because it seems like most of us here take a n inkling to the type of aircraft we are doing here.

I thought the Mirror/mirror GB was a good idea too. I think there are just too many GB's on this forum now. I don't know about other people, but alot of the time I just look through the pages for the builds I'm interested in and don't even notice the rest. Makes it difficult for new builds to get going, but it doesn't mean it's a bad idea. Just keep bumping the build back up every now and then, and you might get a few more in.

Tom I thought this build was dead a while ago, but it just keeps coming back. Good thing too, I like the subject matter of this GB, and the company makes it even more enjoyable. By the time we're finished, I plan to have built every aircraft flown by the US for this GB. Wink [;)]

Yeah i didn't have the Mirror/mirror GB in mind when i mentioned the Gb thing in my last post, there was a similar Gb about a year ago that attracted a lot of members but like Daniel i just look at the Gb's i'm in and skip the rest cause i simply don't have time to build anything for other GB'sThumbs Up [tup]
AS far as this one being a neverending Gb i might have to build that Aussie P-40N late next yearThumbs Up [tup]

I've got two of those things on the bench at the moment Jules. One is painted and decalled and I'm just working on putting a resin cockpit in the Mauve kit. I'll catch that one up to the other and finish them at the same time.

Last night, I marked all the panel lines I have to re-scribe. Turns out there are alot more panel lines on the Monogram kit than were on the real aircraft. Works out well for me, less re-scribing.Party [party]

Tom - This thing will keep on going forever if I start the Japanese aircraft too. After that, I'll do all the carriers, battleships and to finish it off, a scale model of Midway island......Wink [;)]

Daniel - don't forget once you're done with your mock up of Midway you could also do one of the Aleutians and the Dutch East Indies as well... those were both battles affecting Midway in one way or another... oh and while you're at it maybe one of Japan too...

First attempt at an 'artist oil wash'-I'm happy with it. Definatly easier to work with than the acrylic wash I usually do.

Bob - good job!!! you might try a rag with a touch of turpatine (turpentine substitute) It will get some of the streaks off, but I agree... it looks good!! I like the way the oils blend so well....

anyone notice that alot of late 30's and early 40's navy and marine fighters have windows on their bellies even the early corsairs had em i guess it was for observation purposes or to give a better view of what may be blocked out by the wing?

Tom & Jules-thanks. Will probably follow your advise and go over it with a lightly soaked rag this pm. My understanding is that the oil wash is very slow drying.

Jules-yes, that was a FSM in the background-oil wash on a Tiger Tank. Inspiring me to do a piece of armor for the Battle for Germany GB-no canopy to mask!

Oh yeah...how soon we forget......Black Eye [B)]

I kinda remember reading that one of the newer kits (Dragon maybe?) had seperate parts-i.e., wheel & hub. Maybe one of the armor experts can help here.

Let me see......U-boats have no canopy or road wheels....yeah, that's the ticket! Big Smile [:D]

Bob To be honest with you i've started using Canopy masks for all but the simplest canopies, It's not that i can't mask them, I just hate doing it...........
Sigh [sigh] Remember the days when we built them in a couple of days, not worried about filling and sanding seams or canopy masking..........

oh you bunch of weenies!!! you all need to suck it up and get out your roll of Tamiya tape and start masking like a man!! Wink [;)]

Some call it a psychosis but I actually enjoy masking canopies... it gets relaxing to get in that intent on something... of course that Ju-87 canopy was a bit of a challenge but it came out in the end!!!

::shaking head:: and here I thought you guys were hard core...

(Jules: don't tell anyone but I used precut masks on my SBD... and liked them! I'm just too lazy to order a set for every build, these came in the box so I was just curious and tried them...

Quilty as charged.......normally, masking the canopy isn't an issue. Well, not much of one anyway.... However, with the Accurate Min. F-6A, the frames are very shallow to non-existant. Then the Eduard masks were lacking adhesive properties. However, the thought of using the mask template as a guide to cut tape came to mind (and someone mentioned it-not sure which came first...Wink [;)]). Then someone mentioned BMF, which may work even better. That and I'm thinking of testing the address labels that one runs thru a printer. The canopy for the Tamiya Wildcat should be a piece of cake though....just a matter of working it into the schedule..... The planned four day weekend has been pared back to a three day weekend....Dead [xx(]
