Dave Thank's that's great, now to choose the Halifax or Lancaster.  If I can get my paws on the Hasagawa Lancaster then it an easy choice if not I have the Airfix Halifax & Revell Lancaster and both would requier much work Time will tell and the level of my bank account.

I too noticed the 'silvering' Dave pointed out.  You have been updated on th efront page!

Thanks Dave.  If you're refering to the decals on the props, I noticed that in the pic, but no silvering is visible on the model.  Sometimes using flash gives a reflection off the decaled area , especially when the background is flat black.

Yep, I enjoyed the look Rick.  Very nice   Just something about those 5 blade props that look like they mean business.   Is it the photo angle or did you get some silvering on the decals?

Here's my finished build at long last .  The model represents a Hawker Sea Fury of the RCN, VF 870 Squadron, HMCS Shearwater, circa 1950.  The kit is the 1/48 Hobbycraft boxing with lots of AM detail from Cutting Edge & decals from Eagle Strike.  Painting was done mostly with Model Master enamels.

Bear:  My Uncle (420 Sq) flew some of those gardening missions in his Halifax so that would be cool.  I have no problem with that choice.

Marc, for aces of RCAF 401, I seem to remember seeing a decal set that included Kennedy's Spitfire but I'm not 100% sure.

cdlucky - I forgot to clarify myself - I use a pressure regulator, not an air regulator, big difference!

Dave I am considering either a Halifax or Lancaster from 429 Sqn RCAF.  They flew gardening missions where they droped mines in the various sea ways open sea locations.  Just a thought.

Jay For the Aces GB 401 Sqn offers quite a few possibilities  the only thing I need to find is SN & Sqn codes for a specific pilot an I'm in.

ok so heres what ihave doug out of my leading edge decal collection. something simple all my others that i have will take a few weeks of decaling but not this onw its cf-18 hornet 3 wing 200 special paint scheme. so were the heck is the image button?

Bear, as the moderator of the Atlantic build let me know what you're thinking but basically it is pretty open. As long as you can prove that it operated over (or under) open water in the Atlantic, English channel etc. it counts. Mediteranean and Pacific don't (would insert wink smiley if I wasn't typing on a Mac)

Also, all this talk about spitfires. I'm 2/3 through Johnie Johnsons biography "Wing Leader" on the war. Very interesting reading (which is one of many reasons why there has not been much progress on the Sunderland) if you can find it. I found this one in the public library.

CdClukey: I too use the air tank and the Paasche H. The air tank does have a regulator on it and you "should" have a moisture trap just in case but I dismantled mine when I moved and never put the moisture trap back on and haven't had any trouble. I bought one aerosol can when I first got the airbrush. I didn't even get through one model so I said screw that.

In response to request for clarification on the TP stand, it cost only pennies and has multiple uses from cleaning brush to wiping up messes and displaying partially completed models. If things don't work out, flushing is always an option!!!!

I made a critical error in building my Red Knight Tutor. The early version did not have strakes on the nose, so back to the drawing board. I have removed the offending pieces and have started the repainting. Hope to have pictures soon.

I'll try to answer some of your questions

1. You are absolutely right, I've had others say they want to see this as an annual thing.  I must say I've really enjoyed this build and I too have an over abundance of "must build" ideas out there with Canadian content. 

2. I have collected about 8 pictues of colour profiles and black and white photos from various websites and books with the black and yellow target tug scheme.  I do plan on doing my boly in this scheme and I have been thinking long and hard about the masking.  I have not seen any decals for it which will make the masking of the codes rather interesting.  I still have to decide on which number/codes I will be putting on my aircraft though.

3. I have a tank with an air regulator (15$ at your local home depot).  It works very well for what I need and I don't do a ton of airbrushing.  When it runs ut of air I just run to the local gas station nd use their airhose to fill it.  I usually get about 4 or 5 coats before I need to fill it, generally I guess for any model I need to fill it completely twice to get all the airbrushing I need done.  The paache H is a cheap airbrush and works pretty good for now.

OK jay, as a reward for your hard work founding and shepherding this really cool group build, you get to be peppered by questions from me.

1. Not a question, but a vote: I've mentioned this before, but I would love to see this be an annual event. I have a lot of Canadian subjects on my "to-do" list, and I have Leading Edge decals for an RCAF C-47, so I already have a subject for next year.

2. About the Boly profile in your sig...are you planning to do her in the target towing scheme? If so, where did you get scheme info/decals for it? I've wanted to do one of those yellow and black Canuck target tow birds ever since I saw a profile this summer. The book I saw it in (Military Aircraft Markings and Profiles by Barry C. Wheeler) had several, including a Lockheed Ventura. Anything you can tell me about where to find more complete references?

3. Lastly, how do you handle your airtank with your airbrush? Is there there a regulator in the line, or do you just shoot straight from tank? At this point my budget is low (and i have three kids) and a compressor is probably out of the question, so a tank might be a great way to find a happy medium between some "barely an airbrush" like the Testor's aerosol cans and blowing a bunch of money on a compressor.

Well if you want to do the spitfire of an ace with RCAF 401, I know there is Irving "Hap" Kennedy (12 victories) who was the CO during the summer of 1944.  There was also Rod Smith (13.5 Victories) who flew during late 1944.  Check out www.acesofww2.com to get a good list of pilots but sometimes they don't list the unit.

Myself, I am going to build the spitfire of either Doug Lindsey (7.5 victories) of RCAF 403 or Don Laubman (15.5 victories) of RCAF 412.  Both are still alive here in Alberta in Red Deer and I have been in contact with Doug and next time I am in Red Deer, I really want to meet him.  My wife's parents live just north of Red Deer so the odds are good I'll be able to do it soon.

Jay Your right there is no lack of choice for GB's.  I'm toying with joining either:

-Battle of Germany I have a Typhoon that I'd do in 438's markings.  OR

-Battle of the Atlantic that one I'd have to run by the moderator as my choice might be considered a bit of a stretch.  OR

-Super Detail GB a PZL P-23 with full eduardes pe set OR

Your Aces one also sounds interesting I could probably do a spit MK V or MK IX of 401 if they had any Aces flying at that time (more research needed)  That would tie in nicely with my goal of building the A/C of 401/438 Sqn's from inception to today.

As you can see I have a dilema of choice and no I'm not going to join them all that's  asking for trouble.  With my schedule I would'nt finish any, raise my blood pressure (I hate not making my comitments) and my wife would probably kill me as she would have to pry me out of the basement with a crow bar Have yourself a great weekend.

Marc, which GB's are you thinking of?  I am going to be announcing an Allied Aces GB for WW1 and WW2.  I think it will start in April of 2006.  Plenty of others between now and then....

 

Dave/Jay Yup being sick suckes even the smell of styrene is killing me.  The decongestants are working now (Better living through chemistry) so I can at least readup on the other GB's and figure out the next one i'll join so many to choose from. 

Dave Life seems to always get in the way of modeling Kids, gran kids, and my favorite this is the last project on the house promise  Have fun during the next 2 weeks, looking fwd to some pics.

 

GA.  Another 18 would be cool.  They were fun to see when they'd come to CFB Montreal for pit stops.  You asked earlier about an aircraft weapons config.  I found some picks I took when I worked transient servicing with the AF and the aircraft was configed with the center line fuel tank and training sidewinders (missile fuselage was painted blue) on the wing tips the aircraft was from 433 Sqn in Bagotville.

all yalls builds are still looking good keep up the good work. even thou i have been done for some time i stil checck in. but  i mgiht even build a quickie for the canadian gb again. of course it will be another f-18 let me look thru my stash of decals and see what i can turn out for yall..

I called the LHS and the vacform canopy for the Boly is in! woohoo!  I gotta pick it up and check it out.  I have a feeling I might have to extend the deadline for this build into January so I can finish my Boly.  Hey - I'm the moderator of this GB, so I can do it if I want...
