Barney Great site you have there and some very nicely done builds, I'm not much of a jet builder but i am starting to take a liking to the Canadian Hornets......
Maybe a Canadian and an Australian Hornet in 1/48 would look pretty good mixed in with all the prop A/C.........

I've finally finished the landing gear and now she can sit on her own three legs! ..er wheels.

I think it looks pretty good for 1:72. There is a bit of a wonkyness in the starborad struts as I cut and glued one a little crooked and didn't notice till it dried. Oh well you can only see it if you turn it up sidedown and look into the wheel bay. No one will know but me, and you guys of course.

Yes, I'll take pics as soon as I can. Good to hear there are a few more builds coming along. Keep us posted!

Jay, I won't have any in progress pics (haven't entered the digital age yet) but I have started. I primed all the parts on my CF-18, and have everything ready to go for the build. I'm working on a submarine right now but expect to be back on the CF-18 by the end of the month at the latest. It might even be sooner, because my sub's decals are shot, and I'm not planning on weathering until I get and apply new decals. Can't be screwing this one up, it's going in my parents' living room. Great Jules, looking forward to your Mk2 spitfire. I got the starborad LG done, now to do the port.side.

I also printed off the codes for the aircraft on decal paper. I forgot that the colours come out brighter than on regular paper. The red of the letters is going to be a little too red. Oh well, I think it will still look nice.

Hey i got my decals in the mail today, should be finished the Zero and Wildcat in a couple of weeks so after that i'll get to work on the Canadian Spit II and the Aussie Spit VIII, I've decided to build the 2 Spits together to save time masking the Camo scheme, I'll just make up one set of masks and then duplicate it but i think the MK VIII scheme is a little different on the FueselageThumbs Up [tup]

Ha Ha good story Dave. Anyways got the second book you mentioned and wow are there ever some good stories in it. I also got lots of codes but you are right, nothing about Sid flying EE*S. Oh well. {edit} I did check back with an email I got from the guy who owns that website that superbear pointed us to. He had said in his records the only Beaufighter TF.X in his records with EE*S had the serial NT916. That Coastal command book just happens to mention NT916 but not the squadron code, no matter, I will use EE*S and NT916! This is very good news! I was beginning to get dicouragedSmile [:)]

Got a good start on 'fixing' the landing gear. Hopefully I'll finish tomorrow. I doub't I'll get to decals this week...Sigh [sigh]

Barney That's a fine collection of aircraft you have there. Thanks for sharing it with us. Oh and we'll forget you mentioned that... 'other site' Wink [;)]

Hmmm... Hunting eh? I seem to remeber my oldest brother taking me out once when I was about 19 to go bambi shootin'. I bag a big buck about twice the size of anything he had ever shot (he's 9 years older than me and had been hunting since he was a teen too). Don't ever recall him inviting me to go out with him again after that. Laugh [(-D]Big Smile [:D]

Barney, I found a link to your sight a few weeks back but I keep getting the page not found message. Thanks for the tip. I'll try it next time.

Ga.Modler, what do you hunt? Here in Alberta we have ton's of whitetail and mulies. I've been told that the area in and around Elk Island National park just east of Edmonton has the highest concentration of big game in North America. Elk and moose are also popular but to hunt them with a bow, I dunno... I'm not a hunter myself but have friends who do. I love to eat their catch too! yummy deer sausage, mmm.!Dinner [dinner]

I rarely post anything on this forum but I've noticed that a couple of guys are having trouble with acrylic paint pulling off with masking tape. Even though you may have washed the model before painting, you still have to give acrylic paint something to bite into therefore as in 1/1 scale paint jobs, sand the entire model with 600 wet/dry sand paper then wash again.

I've been doing this for a lot of years and it really helps.

BTW, I'm a CDN model on the we(s)t coast and I haunt the ARC site...lots of pics of my C-130E on the In-Progress board.

Dave, I got a hold of the CAF history vol 1 and 2. Really interesting stories and pictures. I'm still wainting on the Canadian Sqdns in Coastal Command though. Hopefully I'll get it Monday? Had some progress, I've decided to build and install each piece of the landing gear seperately in the wheel well (using the kit supplied struts as the base). I think it would be easier than trying to build it all first then trying to fit it in as a complete sub-assembly after. After close inspection of several photos of the Beaufighter's landing gear, it is very complicated, I hope I can replicate a reasonable look-a-like.Black Eye [B)]

Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Tom - Hmmm... Corsair, you could do Hammy Gray's Corsair or maybe Don Sheppard's Corsair. Don Sheppard was a Canadian ace in the FAA (6 kills). Bill Atkinson was another other ace (5 kills too), but he flew Hellcats.

I've got my eye on Hammy's Corsair for the Carrier AC build starting in the spring. and decal sets exist for him too!

Jules - I pulled the rest of the tape off yesterday and it wasn't too bad. The light grey of the undersides only peeled off in a few little areas, mainly where I had putty along the belly seam. Nothing a little touch up won't fix. If I keep going on this pace I might be finished by next weekend!Tongue [:P]

Jay - hey!!! Still haven't forgotten about the build here... I'll try to come up with something this weekend when I go to the LHS... I've been snowed under with work so I have had little modeling time.. Plus Kremps is staying at the house as she had to evacuate due to Hurricane Katrina... (she was working in one of the mud wrestling joints on Bourbon St.) so it's put a dent in my lifestyle... between her, that parrot and the 2 extra dogs in the house (bringing the total to 5 dogs!!) I haven't rested a bit!

Actually my sister in law and her husband were here with the same scenario (parrot/5 dogs/4 adults in one smallish house)...except my sister in law is a physical therapist and has, to my knowledge - never frequented the mud wrestling places Wink [;)] they are back now staying about an hour north of N.O. and I am fully recovered from the trauma... well... except somehow the parrot and I formed quite the bond and I have been sending her daily emails with no response... kinda like Romeo and Juliet I figure... Disapprove [V]

I'll update ya on the build... I was thinking about the Corsair at my local Hobby Lobby but $90 would put a crimp (not a Kremp) in the budget right now...
---Tom--- O' brave new world, That has such people in it!

Jay, I've had those problems before and it's disheartening when your masking tape peels of the paint, I had to repaint my MK VIII RAAF spit totally because of that, Since then I've taken to giving every colour a coat of future between coats to protect it from tape pull off and i've had no problems since thenThumbs Up [tup]

Wel, I got the Beaufighter all painted this morning. I put the ocean grey on and tonight I take the masking tape off - carefully. I noticed the lgiht gull grey of the underside peeled off a bit in places as I was putting the masking tape on.. I've never worked with Tamiya paints before so I hope they won't give me problems. Next up - future! then decals.

@ panzer67 nice work on the quad

@ jay if your having problems with your tail wheel have a look at this site
http://www.djparkins.clara.net/fltpath/fp72_beaufighter.htm
it may have some bits you could use. I came accross the site looking for RAF bomber bits. Nice work on those engines.

It must have been the weekend of the paint Gods I also spent all of last weekend painting what will become my aviation room. Another weekend with the brush and I should be finished.

would anyone know if there are red letter decals (bomber command style) for squadron codes available in 1/72 ????

Cheers
Bear

Jay I posted the name of the book in the previous post. I brought the book home but it is late and I don't feel like setting up the scanner. The good news though is I think I have a serial number for you. LZ 291. While it doesn't specifically mention that this is EE*S the author does make note of the Code letter if he is flying another machine other than this one. For instance it mentions that he flew "D" JL 947 on one mission and "Z" NV 177 on another. So far I have found no mention of the "S".

This book is a really good read, I couldn't put it down, so if you can find it I highly recommend you pick it up.

Jay was at the library on my lunch and found a book (Canadian Squadrons in Coastal Command - Andrew Hendrie) with a picture of Syd and his plane (still no serial # Sad [:(]) as well as several other 404 Sq aircraft. I will fire up the scanner tonight and send you some pics.

Sounds like a great weekend Jay... except for the house painting, did a lot of that myself this weekend.

As for modeling, got the North Africa GB out of the way and some more progress on my OOTB GB (B-17F) so won't be long before I can get started on this one. Big Smile [:D]

Hope everyone's weekend was a productive as mine! First off I got my basement stairwell painted! It used be a pink colour - ugh! Now it is a nice creamy beige colour.

As for my model I got it pre-shaded and the light gull grey of the under sides AB'd on. I was lazy and I tried an interesting method of preshading using black marker (sharpie). I think it worked pretty good. I also got a hold of a guy who knows AC serials and I think I got a valid serial for the Beaufighter EE*S flown buy Sqdn/Ldr Shulemson in June of 1944. Now I just have to make my own decals for it.

And I also got a hold of Col Doug Lindsey hear in Alberta. He was an ace in WW2 (7.5) and also got 2 Mig kills in Korea. Hopefully I can contact him next time I am visiting the in-laws (they live in a town less than 1/2 hour from where Doug lives). I now have another project for the near future (spitfire mk9 of RCAF 403)!

as I said I was very productive!Big Smile [:D]Tongue [:P]
