Here's an update on my "scary" Airfix CF-18.
1. Leading Edge decals arrived in less than 2 weeks, and well before the start date. They are beautiful, and the C-47 scheme is even nicer. Speaking of which...can we make this an annual fall group build?
2. I thought the decals for the stab (bright blue with a very slick fade effect at the bottom) covered the whole stab. If I'd just looked at the picture of the set on their website, I would have had a clue, but I didn't.
So, I'll have to figure out how to do the effect myself, but as long as I experiment a lot first, it should work out. The plan is to paint the whole stab blue and then use a soft mask to spray some light gray on.
3. On September 1st I primed all the parts with the Wal-Mart house brand. This past weekend I bought the Testors Bright Blue for the stab, and Rustoleum Winter gray and Pewter Gloss for the camo.
4. I also picked up, for only 97 cents
, a craft base that I'll paint in a Canadian scheme. I figure I'll do a flag, or the old-style red, white and blue roundel, or do the red and white zig-zag lines in a way similar to the layout on the decal sheet above, maybe with a small roundel or large maple leaf between the two wide ends. Decisions, decisions...
5. I decided to do very little weathering, all the photos I've found of these airshow circuit birds are really clean.
6. My son has announced that he wants to build the Revell snap-tite Blue Angels F/A-18 and paint it as an operational jet. So, I'm just going to hand off the weapons, drop tanks and decals from the Airfix kit to him. Nice how things work out sometimes.
7. If you haven't dozed off by now...It will be awhile before I'm back (but no more novel-length updates!) because I am going to finish my Revell USS Lionfish before I do too much more with the CF-18. The Lionfish only has 30 parts and 3 colors, but I want to take extra care because it was the last kit my grandad worked on, and it's going to my parents. That said, if everything stays on schedule (HA!) the CF-18 should be done by the end of the first week in October.
