Jules, I know what you mean. I have been in contact with a Canadian Ace here (Douglas Lindsey, 10.5 air to air victories). He flew in the summer of 1944 with RCAF 403 and I have aircraft codes and serial numebrs for a few AC he flew. I really want to do his Spitfire mk.9c - KH*K (sn ML411) which he flew on July 3 when he shot down 3 bf-109's to become and ace and raise his total to 7 victories. And it had the invasion stripes to boot! I made sure I asked him about the stripes (For some reason the they look the best on the Spitfire and Typhoon, I just can't put my finger on it as to why...) and he said they kept them on until the end of the war. I really want to do his Spitfire for the Allied aces build I mentioned. The cool thing (from a modeling perspective) is he also got two mig-15 kills in Korea while on loan to the USAF in Sabres! I also want to do his Sabre too!
Speaking of Invasion stripes, I put on the kit invasion stripe decals for my beaufighter, while they look really good from a distance, I must say they were a real b
h to put on. They ripped, pulled, broke, stuck, wrinkled, almost every problem you could think of, they did. That was for the fuselage decal which I should have cut into two but was afraid of the overlap on the spine. I did cut the wing ones and they went on okay except for the starbord wing. As soon as I put it on a chunk of the white stuck and would not move, I ripped it as I was trying to get it into place. The good thing is all the other decals seem to be going on okay and snuggling down with mico sol and set. Once the decals dried, the stripes looked nice and tight in the areas where it didn't wrinkle. I can fix it though, so no worries. It sure makes the plane look sharp though.
Marc, that is funny you are doing YO*A from the summer of 1940. Just this last May I completed my first build in about 10 years and It was for the BOB GB. I did the Hasegawa Hurricane mk.1 in markings from RCAF 1 sqdn. I did it as YO*J (sn v6746) which I got from an armourers list of aircraft that was worked on in Sept of 1940. I should post pics of it.
